Winifred Schmidt in appreciation for her complete understanding of us and for all she has so willingly done to make our Senior year memorable. The Class of' 1946 8 M' ff' in memoricam MISS FRANCES M. ANDERSON MISS ANNA H. BOYD Death has laid a heavy and most unexpected hand on Girls Vocational this year. Miss Boyd, who taught Sewing since the school was established, died October 12, 1945. She was one of the most conscientious teachers among us, devoted to in- structing her girls in the handiwork she herself knew so well. She was always willing and anxious to explain the work her classes were engaged in and her door was open to teachers and pupils alike. . Miss Andekson, who died January 21, 1946 came to Girls Vocational in September, 1937. She was an excellent teacher and time and again the students she had had in English I and II could rise proudly in upper classes to say nOf course I know that, Miss Anderson taught it.n For'what she taught was not soon forgotten. All of us, faculty and students, agree that in the halls, in Room 223, in the library, we miss the kindly smile Miss Anderson had for everyone. 9 o retirements Within the past year, the English Department has lost two of its most able members and the school, two of its vet- eran teachers. Both Miss Florence Hopkins, who retired in June 1945, and Mrs. Margaret Frank, who left in January of this year, had taught at Girls Vocational from its earliest days, and countless girls will long remember their excellent instruction and kindly influence. To both we say HMay you enjoy to the utmost the well- earned idle years ahead.H 10 ocknowleclgments To Miss Watt, who has given so generously of her time and talents to our yearbook. To Mr. lawrence, who has gone out of his way to secure innumerable ads. To Miss Massman, who has considerably strengthened the finances of the yearbook through the Variety Show and Skating Parties. To Miss Fritz, Miss Blake, and Miss Ormond who helped with our Variety Show. To the typists who worked so very hard. To Lucy Geryak and Gertrude Barber, loyal Juniors, who secured ads. To anyone whom we may have neglected to mention who did anything to make the 1946 Herald a success. pofrons Mr. Joseph Kiffman Mr. Oliver M. Lawrence Miss Helen M. Secretary President Treasurer senior oH:icers vcledictory As our graduation day approaches and we pass beyond the ties of Girls Vocational High School, we leave behind us very little--only the memory that we have passed this way--but we take with us the traditions and the teaching and the affection of our Alma Mater that will be a cloak around us in the world into which we go. We have spent our years here in study and preparation, work and play, all fitting us for the new freedom that shall be ours and the new responsibilities that such freedom entails. Through our relations with our teachers and classmates we have learned to appraise those human characteristics of honor, truth, loyalty, and fair play, which, more than any amount of education, will make us worthy to take our place in the land of liberty and opportunity that is America. We feel a deep sense of gratitude for what we have received here. Our Principal and our teachers have devoted their lives to making happy and complete the years of learning, for us as well as for the thousands who have preceded us and shall come after us. There is nothing that we can say to them, for our hearts are too full for expression--we can only show our appreciation by remembering forever the lessons they have instilled in us. To our parents whose love and interest have made this day possible, we make a si- lent promise to do our utmost to fulfill their belief in us. The joys and sorrows of our high school years are caught up in a flowing tide of laughter and happiness as we look back over the past. The days that seemed to stretch so long ahead of us have gone by all too swiftly and our departure from these familiar halls is upon us before we are quite aware of it. We have been happy here among our friends--some of them willxalways be near us. Others we shall never see again, yet each has contributed something to Our Graduation--we have looked forward to it so long. It is ing at the top of a long dark staircase, the ladder of youth we have so slowly climbed. Now we stand triumphantly at the lifted to the skies of tomorrow that promise us so much, our backward in reluctant farewell to those who walk behind us. at long last, for us to say goodbye, and yet we find that it our being. a bright light shin and education which peak--our faces hands stretching The time has come, is impossible to say--as we silently and slowly start down the path of life, we can only whisper, nuntil we meet again.u Composed by: Edna Frampton, Norma Gentner, Margaret Lupp, Adele Stroh, Patricia Warren. 15 STANDING: Mildred Mytnik, June Buhs, Victoris Fronckowiak, Demaris Carlin SEATED: Marcella Kiffman, Theresa Krzes, Alice Vickner senior council will We, the Class of 1946 of Girls Vocational High School being of sound mind and memory do herewith declare this our last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by us made. We give and bequeathe to our school our love and the fond memory of the four years we have spent here. To Mr. Regan we leave sincere appreciation of his position as our principal. To our teachers our affection which has steadily grown through the years of our acquaintance with them. T0 THE INCOMING SENIOR CLASS The typewriter in Room 312 used as many a contract and bailment example. The lockers near the drinking fountain on third floor - hope they're big enough. Miss Turnbull's morning makeup class - or perhaps you'd prefer the one at 3 P.M. The honor seats by the windows in Mrs. Schmidt's room - and VC4A leaves their empty dunce row to CT3A. The scale in the gymnasium where so many pounds were gained and lost thru the year, of course, some people say it's out of order. Mr. Lawrence's hacksaw for those who lock their lockers and can't open them. Several screws for the pencil sharpener in Room 308. The privilege of picking up papers in the hall. The Senior home room - our beloved 322, clean, shiny and decorated, especially the bulletin boards. The honor or the job of decorating the bulletin boards in the halls. The front seats in the auditorium, most.desireable when the speaker is a MAN, a little hard on the eyes when there's a movie - but then you can't have everything. To all Freshmen, All Seniors bequeathe their classroom, lunchroom, study room, corridor, street car, and bus manners, so conscientiously practiced by us all year To Miss Fritz VC4B leaves one sack of flour, one package of cocoanut, one pound of sugar and whatever else she needs to make Thinsies. To Mrs. Schmidt's 6th period English class whoever they may be - VC4A leaves the privilege of having birthday parties, provided Miss Fritz and Miss Massman are invited. Mrs. Schmidt is very generous about supplying the table cloths. VC4A also leaves their instruction in Charm - just look at us. VC4A to VC 3A all the typing for the yearbook. CT4A to CT3A the pasting job, guaranteed to make the girls themselves very sticky. Alice Vickner leaves her heirloom cover girl look to Marie Perrello. To hungry Juniors, Marie McKee, Mildred Mytnik, Geraldine Kralick leave their places in the lunchline achieved by 4 years of practicing running downstairs. To Shirley Schnieder, Amelia Gurini's ability to chew gum. To Alice Kingsland, Margaret Brier leaves the same doubtful talent. To Mary Falcone and Tina Serfilippi, Norine Roska's bowling shoes. It's amazing what bowling shoes will do for your score. To F3A, Sophie Kajdas and Regina Rozek leave the task of making punch for parties and helping Mr. lawrence get it into the punch bowl. 0Ops! it splashed. To Rose Marie Caruana and Lillian Genco, Vicky and Marcie leava the privilege of going bowling with the faculty. To Dorothi Henne, Marcie also leaves her instruc- tor's copy of nTen Lessons in Bowling for eachers.n . ', To Irene Young, Adele Stroh leaves her ability to get to school on time. . I 17 ,X To some attractive Junior with attractive place in the Color Guard. To some similar Junior, Isabel Apa leaves Louise Plowden leaves her ability to talk Watts, not that Edna needs this ability. Mary Tarquinio leaves the same ability to it either? To Lorraine Kranick, Jean Voss leaves all legs. Adeline Superczynski leaves her the statement NI pledge allegiance---U her way out of any situation to Edna Shirley Schneider. Does Shirley need the men's hearts she has captured. Dolores Kranick leaves her well worn eraser to Phyllis Roebuck, with a warning. Never use it in Miss Dale's class, at least not if she is looking. To Rose Marie Caruana, Betty Pfeifer leaves her favorite seat in History makeups. To the most mathematical Junior, whoever she may be, Helen Forte leaves the count ing of the bus ticket money on Monday mornings. As a reward Helen leaves to that same Junior her locker at the extreme end of the third floor, known as Florida. To some unfortunate Junior, Louise Plowden leaves the running of the Prom. Oh, yes louise had helpers - but they were invisible so much of the time. To Grace Gazdzik, Sophie Kajdas leaves the joy of walking from the ground floor to the third floor and back in five minutes each morning. To Jean Dains goes Sophie's honorable position of making chocolate sauce. Foods IV leaves to Foods III the task of helping with the cafeteria cooking - don't leave out the salt - and the task of counting cookies - remember you must always get more out of the recipe than the cookbook says. To Mrs. McCutcheon, Anne Cardwell leaves a box of candy so she can eat with the class instead of sending the offenders out in the hall. To Miss Massman, her first aid classes leave one dozen square knots and 74 yards of bandage. To Beatrice Kershaw, Margaret Brier leaves all her strenuous efforts to get up in the rings in gym. To Alice Swift and Edna Watts, Norma Gagern, Gloria Butts and Ruth Griffin leave a copy of that popular book--nPunctuality and How to Achieve 1t.u Rose Marie Kershaw leaves her unexpected acting ability to Rose Marie Caruana and Grace Gazdzik. Mary Tarquinio leaves the Junior Red Cross to Miss Massman. Connie Saraceno leaves to Lillian Genco all the strenuous things she had to do all year to prove that size doesn't count. Remember that rope pulling job? Norma Felder leaves her executrix ability to Carolyn Doster---a very handy alibi for jobs not done. Frances Kalarovich leaves to Esther Altamura her love of visiting, especially all over the homeroom. We hereby appoint the Class of 1947 executrices of this will. In testimony whereof we hereunto set our hand and seal this first of June in the year of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-six. Our assemblies are held in our spacious auditorium every Monday morning from nine to ten o'clock, unless a special program requires a later time. We convene to the strains of a stirring march in order of classes land how the Seniors are envied their choice front seatsl. Our opening ceremony's traditional: we rise as the Color Guard marches in, salute the Flag, sing the Star Spangled Banner, and recite the Lord's Prayer. Some of the programs we have had this year have been most interesting. A partial list follows: NOVEMBER 19, 1945 Rev. John L. Fleck gave us a Thanksgiving account about Catching a bus, reminding us to take the right road in order to be successful in life. NOVEMBER 26, 1945 Rev. Father Hyland, S. J. gave an account of his experiences as a pris- oner of the Japanese outside Manila. DECEMBER 7, 1945 Miss Norina Risman, representing a pattern company, brought various styles designed by the company's design studios and modeled by the senior and junior girls. She stressed the importance of saving material and showed the girls how they may stretch the wear of clothing and yet keep up with the styles. DECEMBER 21, 1945 A delightful Christmas Pageant, directed by the music and art depart- ments, helped to give the audience that ever-so popular Christmas spirit. Many students participated in it, and their cooperation and patience helped to make it an entire success. JANUARY 7, 1946 Miss Ormond directed a delightful singing assembly. FEBRUARY 11, 1946 Joseph Brenner, a speaker from the Historical Society, showed and ex- plained slides of important buildings in Buffalo's history. FEBRUARY 18, 1946 We saw a movie nThe Man Without a Country.n This picture showed how Philip Nolan, an American Soldier, criticised his country and said he never wanted to hear about it, so he was sent away to be transferred from ship to ship never to step foot on American soil and never to read or hear anything concerning America as long as he lived. FEBRUARY 25, 1946 Dr. Campbell visited us to tell us about his eighteen years of blind life, and then a sudden change to light which brought him a new life. He had learned how to get along in complete darkness without aid of a seeing eye dog and it was a t k t t fer to the life of a normal person. He stated that it is just as difficult for Hsbligd 2:25 to learn to see as it is for a blind man to learn to get along blind. MARCH 4, 1946 Miss Betty Beckerton told the story of th b k uTh E d In ' delightful manner. JUNE 3, 1946 Miss Massman conducted the yearly Athletic Assembly where trophies, ban- ners, and other awards were distributed to the students who earned them. activities ROLLER SKATING PARTIES: We have had very few roller skating parties in the past few years. The second term of this year we really started out with a nbang.n We had five parties, one every month, January 9, February 6, March 13, April 3, and May 15. The first four of these were great successes. They were to raise money for the yearbook fund. The skating party on May 15 was even a bigger and better success. This was for the Athletic Fund. We have had alvery good turnout for all of our skating parties throughout the school including a c asses. DANCES: Each year the pupils contribute a small fee at the beginning of the year, and this money is used for dances and parties. Our dances have been very successful this year. In November, we had two Harvest Dances, one for the freshmen, sophomores, and iuniors and the other for the Senior Class. The Seniors from Burgard Vocational High School and Boys Vocational High School were the guests of the Senior girls. February 11 was the Valentine Day Dance for the first and second ea ' February 13 was the Junior-Senior Valentine Day Dance with guest Senior! fiogugdisargng cational High School, Boys Vocational High School, and Tech High. Both of th 5 0- were very successful and were outstanding occasions to everyone. ese ances BIKE BIKES: Yes we picked the windy month of March for our first bike hike, March 30. Everyone started out with intentions of going to Como Lake but due to the fierce wind we ended up at Island Park a little windburned. We all had a jolly time. April 30 the hikers rode out to Como Lake. The ride was really very invigorating and very tiring, but there were more participants making it a much gayer ride. Alice D. The compe- tition was rather keen and battle after battle was fought, until VC4A came out on top with CT1B as the runner up. The semi-finals were played between CTIB vs. CT2A and VC4A vs. CT4A, with the resulting final game played between VC4A and CTIB. This year the tournament was played off in a different way than those of preceding years. The Round Robin System was used rather than of elimination. VC4A had two teams entered and both went undefeated until the fateful day they played against each other. The first game ended in a tie score 12-12, but in a later playoff Team 1 tPivot, Punch, and Shoot! was successful and claimed the trophy. CTIA was the undefeated freshmen team and therefore received the basketball banner as the runner up. I Bowling was entered into with great enthusiasm by all. The interest was sustained throughout until with great reluctance the final session was held. Along with the enthusiastic students there were several teachers trying their hand at bowling. These included Mrs. Schmidt, Miss Fritz, Mrs. Griffin, and Miss Callahan. For the twelve weeks that bowling was held, Rita Jaskier VCZD with the re- markable high average Gazdik with 103 for a only seven weeks, was Again this year by the Tumblers. u0hl My Aching Back,U a common slang expression can be truthfully voiced of 137, walked off with the trophy. Next in line was Grace ten week average, and in third place, also with 103, but for June Buhs of VC4A. we were treated to a grand performance given on letter Day by members of the tumbling group. At the time this book went to press the Baseball tournament had not as yet been played off. However, there is no doubt that all the classes will have a team in there pitching. The Badminton tournament had not been completed at the time this book went to press. However, several of the girls represented our school in the Western New York Girl's Doubles Badminton Tournament.
