It seems that wherever one goes, it is necessary to cope with a situation re- quiring at least a slight knowledge of a foreign language. ln reading our own literature, we are often con- fronted with foreign words which are inserted to give a fuller meaning. Naturally we can appreciate the book much more if we understand the fore eign phrases. A reading knowledge of the language of a country enables one to explore that country's vast field of literature. Not only is the knowledge of a foreign language a cultural asset. but it is also a vocational asset. During the last century, trade and communi' cation between Several progressive na- tions ofthe world has increased many times. News correspondents, buyers, and even clerks selling products with foreign names find a knowledge of one or more foreign languages very useful. The Four-Year Science Course includes one year of general science, and one year each of biology, chemistry. and physics. The first year is spent in getting a general view of the next three years' work and is called General Science. This course includes the study of many of the common things which a pupil sees in her surroundings, such as fire air water fuel food cloth- ing and shelter Many common oc currences like the positions of heaven ly bodies causes of tides and changes in weather and seasons are explained Biology is the study of plants and animals and fosters a love and ap preclation of nature Flowers birds trees and many other creatures of nature will have a new meaning to the girl who studies biology Everyone who has had chemistry will agree that it is one of the most interesting sciences. The student learns to write equations and formu- las and to handle acids, bases, gasses, and salts. Laboratory work is an important part of this course. It is in this work that the student per- forms experiments and analyzes the composition of various substances. Physics isn't as foreign and diffi- cult as it sounds. One learns that a hammer, nutcracker, shovel, or pair of scissors is a simple machine. The study of sound, light, and color re- veals many facts one didn t know ex isted Interesting experiments are performed in this course too The Sclence Course provides girls with the necessary requirements for college and also prepares the girls who wish to study nursing A knowledge of science furnishes the student with a cultural background and enables her to interpret the facts of existence as disclosed by her facul IIQS and senses Forty :lx B I . o Lg , , o G Y c L A s s c-'e . THE SOPHOMORE OPEN -HOUSE PROGRAM On Vxfednesday, March twentieth, the sophomore girls were hostesses to their parents. After visiting many classes in our school, the parents as- sembled in the school auditorium. Here the sophomore class presented an entertainment which they had prepared for their parents. Norma Seefeldt, president of the sophomore class. opened the program with a very cordial welcome to the parents. The music for the occasion was furnished by the sophomore orchestra One of the English classes enter- tained the guests with a humorous excerpt from Shakespear's Merchant of Venice. Hulda Lange played two violin selections, and sophomore girls from several sewing classes presented a style show. Miss Dysart, acting principal, greeted the parents. In her talk she explained that we had found it more practical to invite small groups to visit our school while the classes were in session, rather than entertain all of the parents at one time I I S O Ps HT OY ML OE R Es H O iW C LM OE WR NC H SA CN ET N EO F V E N I C E GROWING PAIN S Growing Pains, a threeaact comedy by Aurania Rouverol, was the presentation of the senior class, on the evenings of May 3 and 4. The play gives a delightful slant on the adolescent boy and girl, those hovering uncertainly about the age of sixteen. As the title implies, there are many Upainfuln situations.
