S. first made its start 'Mid the sound of rumbling feet, And this school progressed with no other thought Than to teach, and new students to greet. The students were young and the school was young When they moved to Palmetto hill, And it grew with a growth stupendous indeed And resounded with many a jill, VVith enrollment increased from year to year As each seat they tried to fill. And this was the reason as time passed by In this vaulted hall of learning. That we did excel in most every field Especially to Latin were we turning, 'Til everyone knew our fortune and fame And to attend this great school were yearning. But our school it still sorely was lacking in room As more people desired to learng And thus it decided to annex a house Witli an office as left you do turng To give us a place for relaxing our bones And escaping the teachers so stern. But the sun never beams without bringing us dreams Of our modern new school on the hill, And the stars never shine but our hearts seem to pine As memories of school linger still. So all the years through we shall remember you With your ideals so loyal and true, In your sepulchre trampled by feet, In your tomb on Palmetto Street. i751 ., Zf ' fzl':1'g,? The seniors declare that the rats are a nuisance. Miss Duffy delivers an address on the seventh-graders' enormous feet. VVith Martha in the title role, The Snowman, a Christmas play reveals our dramatic talents. 'ff Because of polio, a late start forced us to spend our Saturday play time at school. Because of Pearl Harbor, war stamps took the place of our annual. Blushes of embarrassment redden our faces as we roll and kick in gym shorts before a May Day audience. Betty, Ann Elizabeth, and Martha Shorter per- form as trainbearers and page respectively. September, '42-M ay, '43 Everyone receives the assurance that we are eighthhgrade lassies instead of seventh grade babies. The Signal Mountain crowd and Dot Doty join us. Ann Elibba succeeds Betty as president. Our pockets are empty because of the G. P. S. jeep which we bought. There is the sound of grumbling and protesting during the Christmas holidays as we have to use our time to make biology charts. The eighth grade sewing class gives a fashion show to display the pajamas and slips which they made. Barbara emerges as the champion of our class by winning the American His- tory Medal. September, '43-May, '44 The hands of Ann Elibba, Betsy Hill, Betsy Latimore, Barbara Carlin, Peggy Liberman, Carol, Betty, joy, Sally, and Betsy Robertson are frequently dirty from dusting library books. The tone quality of the Glee Club receives more volume from the added voices of Barbara, Marie? Donna, Dot,' Libby, Betsy Hill, Sally, Carlin, Betsy Robertson, Suzie, Martha Shorter, Bettie Turnbull, Betty Wiggs, and Martha. North Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, and Donna joined us. Continuing our struggle with defunct Latin and living Spartanburg, we started up Fools' Hill with Betsy Hill as our leader. September, '44-May, '45 We realize that we are not so smart as we profess to be. Our grades fluctuate in Caesar and M. Sc M. history. gy jackie and Ruth decide to try out for the Glee Club. Result-no new mem- bers from our class. When we vote to have an Honor Council, Sally is unanimously chosen as representative. Our star basketball forward, Ruth, makes the Varsity. The Dramatic Club adds new talent in the form of Betsy Hill, Connie, Bebe, Mae, and Peggy Liberman. A tea to dedicate our founders' portraits brings out the hrst plans of the new school. Our hopes leap Q we assume that our class will be the first to graduate there. Alice, Ann Cullom, and Mae make the Glee Club-jackie and Ruth protest, and decide to crash the Glee Club. Betsy Hill, Dot, jackie, Cullom, Betty, Alice, Peg Lawwill, and Barbara steal the show at Mav Day with their Monkey dance. Betsy Robertson and Carol rise as the brains of our class to win the Grace McCallie and Marion Parker awards respectively. L Prophecy MEMORIES OF A MEGALOMANIAC OR FOREVER AMBIGUOUS Today as I sat on my imperial throne, the royal Egyptian messenger enteredg and after the usual obsequious tributes, he presented me with a copy of the STATIC, sent to me from America. A wave of nostalgia swept over me as I read about my old classmates, most of whom I have not seen in twenty years. It seems LaVonne is in Cuba, and is running a night club for unescorted young ladies. Mimi Stevens, always ambitious, has written a best seller entitled But I Don't Under: stand to which Mary Spann has written a sequel- Well, It's This Way. Mary Spann always was up on current events and scientific facts. The article goes on to say that joy Wright is now the owner of a large chain of riding academies throughout the United States and Cuba. Lucy Bright has found her haven- Mexicog nobody has to be on time there!! Bebe has opened an information bureaug if in doubt about anything, see Bebe-she'll guarantee to set you straight. After the retirement of Mrs. Martin, jerry became the dietitian at Baylor and is having a grand time. jenny Jeffreys is now rivalling G. P. S. with Miss Jeffreys' School for Girls, which requires no study, no homework, no lessons, no nothin', except a good time. Which reminds me- Betsy Robertson visited me a few weeks ago on her way to S. W. Africa. She was going to teach the natives Latin, which is the up and coming language of the day. Libby has an advertisement in the STATIC of her shop on Fifth Avenue, which sells lavender and purple creations exclusively. I was not surprised to read that Sally McClellan, after trying for many years to decide which of her beaux to marry, finally gave up and in desperation killed herself. I think it is rather significant that the method of suicide she chose was falling otlt of the window of the old G. P. S. Annex. It has been rumored that Peg Lawwill just cau't keep husbands. She has now blown up her fifth husband during a chemical experiment. Poor thing just cannot add the right ingredients. Martha's Get Slim Again Gym is drawing all the present G. P. S. Seniors. Her motto is Starve during the week and eat over the week-end. Carlin now owns a pawn shop. It seems that she had the idea back in the good old days when she collected so much jewelry. Janis is still playing the piano for those gym classes at school. Can you imagine? Betsy has a famous argyle suit which has caused quite a stir in the fashion world, although you know Betsy-nothing excites her. She vows she'll quit knitting, but after ten years' practice, it would be hard to stop. jackie has just returned from Italy where, catering to her burning desire to learn more Latin, she has studied more deeply her beloved language. The last I heard of Sadie she was still trying to get herself out of a brawl that was started at a national meeting of Phi Delta Theta. wigs- 0 5 wr? E781 M 57' . . ' .TX LC f fijwxlig . 4 4. ' F ffs 1 E Ann Burt went home last month with her darling German husband. They are very devoted even if she doesn't understand a word of what he says. Barbara Sue has obtained a contract to sing with The Grand Ole Opry. She says it fulfills her life-long ambition to sing opera. From experience gained while in their old days at G. P. S. working on the Annual Board and the Look-In, Betty and Dot are now publishing an enterprising paper entitled It's a Man's World. Tune in next Tuesday on the Thin Man and you will hear Mary Ruth Davies play the coveted role of his wife. Ann Libba is running a ranch. She finally got away from those cliffs. Ruth Brown, popularly known as the Ace of the Americas, flew down the other day in her own P-813. Ruth, incidentally, resides in sunny California- Where, she explains, the weather is perfect for f'lying. Donna now has a prohtable job singing over the radio. You can hear her every day tunefully bursting forth with D-U'Z, D-U-Z, buy Duz for your washing machine. Carol is always seen among the first nighters at the French Opera House, where she is an up-and- coming critic for the Parisian Daily News. Cullom has written a best-seller entitled How to Be True to One Man. I never knew Cullom had so much literary ability. Peggy Liberman is now running the Vogue and has just returned from Siberia where she tried to learn what the natives wear. I haven't seen these girls in twenty years-ah, but I have been happy living here in Egypt. Three days after I graduated from G. P. S., I suddenly discovered that I was Cleopatra- imagine how delighted I was. Ever since that time I have reigned contentedly surrounded by obsequious slaves. My one sorrow is that Antony has never shown up. Several of my class-mates are living here in my palatial mansion with me-the poor dears, after the sheltered life'at G. P. S., couldn't stand the strain of the outside world: and their minds cracked. I'm certainly glad my mentality was not affected! Mary Ann Dulaney, my royal cell-mate, is badly affected with melancholia. She sits around and mopes and at the bare mention of Bristol, she bursts into heart-rending sobs. Suzy Schmidt after a brilliant musical career finally cracked and succumbed to monomania. She sits at the piano all day and plays One More Tomorrow with one finger. Norma Raoul is with us, too. Her case was never diagnosed, but she spends her time knitting strange articles that no one can identify. Mae Conner, who was always noted for her hair decorations, is in the cell across the hall. She keeps trying to put all the furniture on her head as an ornament. The other day she put her mattress on her head thinking it was a gardenia and nearly smothered to death. Connie Duke is in a sad condition. Too many tests at G. P. S. turned her into a paranoiacg and now she has spells during which she beats her head against the wall of her padded cell and grits her teeth. The poor, dear nuts-I feel so sorry for them, but I see to it that my royal servants take good care of them. By Cleopatra Bond. J V 1, lsr?
