THE POLYTECHNIC MAID 27 Well, I might have known something was up, Bill said. VVhen Peggy had gathered herself up, Bill asked, You didn't fall for me, did you? Well, I don't know. It was all your fault, anywayf' That night Bill invited a boy friend of his from college over and all four went out canoeing. The four young people went together all summer, and when the boys returned to school in the fall, the girls were both wearing diamonds. That winter Babe went to live with Peggy, where she learned to cook and sew. When the boys graduated from college the next year, Babe was as plump and pretty as her little friend.
