Girls' Latin School SOUND AND FURY CA tale mostly signifying nothing, being a day in the life of Latina Q. Studentnagle, the fairest of her sex.j From a confused dream wherein harpies with valence bonds for claws croaked, Given the length of your nose, construct a triangle on it, Latina woke to the shrill serenade of an alarm clock. 7 A. Nl. Plus or minus? wondered the indefatigable Latina, her mind always alert. She was not one of your ever tired souls: no, having counted the days to Saturday and then to the next vacation, she let her mind dwell onthe pleasant prospect of sleeping till noon, but was up like a flash Cin the panj. As she dressed she reflected phil- osophically, School and the poor are always with us. A creature of allusions Cand illusionsb was the foul Latina Cfor Macbeth says that fair is foulj, but unfortunately most of her allusions were too obscure for other people to rec- ognize, But we delay the fair Latina, schoolward bound. After devouring a meagre breakfast, Latina set out for school. Even in her eating our Latina was a very Spartan. For example, she had cut down her morning meal to a mere three courses. Indeed other people might recline in easy chairs with stools for their feet, but Latina felt duty bound to stretch out completely on the divan-none of your softening luxuries for her. Look what happened to the Romans. All dead, now. So with a kiss for her mother and one last mournful look back at the home to which she would not return till that afternoon, Latina stumbled off to school. Life on the school car was a simple thing. She had merely to breathe, for her books were held up by the backs of the people in front of her, her lunch was flattened out by the people beside her. In no time at all our fair heroine had arrived at the school portals, had descended to the Lower World of the Locker Room, dropped her wraps in a corner of her locker, and had heaved herself up to the third floor. Once settled in the schoolroom, Latina was torn between the two groups that vied with each other for the upper hand in the conversation. There was the That's what she says, but you never can tell, faction: and the, What did you get for the last question? group. Dear Latina was impartial and got off bons mots for both sides. Unhappily, the bell rang and school had begun. In Math, Latina sat in a quandary fsomething like a chair. but less com- fortablej and hoped that she wouldn't be called on for what she didn't know. Nothing more eventful happened, however, than that she fell off her chair in a fit of absent-mindedness. From Math she wandered to French and thence to Latin. This sudden transition made it a bit difficult for Latina to adjust her esprit gaulois to Vergil's stately harmonies. but she did. Caught unawares during the comp lesson, when asked to decline a new doll, Latina rose with dignity and re- plied 'lNo, thank you. Setting up drill came next. This period was noth- ing more to Latina than an appetizer. The languid gymnastics which she en- dured were secondary to the snatches of lunch that she furtively nibbled. Such exertion, such activity, merited some rest. Fortunately study period came in time to give Latina this needed relaxation. Next to study, lunch was Latina's favorite period. The sound of the bell and the gnawing feeling in her stomach notified her that her favorite period CPage Seventy-fourj

C lass of 193 7 had arrived. Ah, what a flow of mind and feast of reason-she did the feast- ing and the crumbs did the flowing. The room was buzzing about the latest screen triumph of Latina's Licet Hesperia CMae West to youj and Latty basked in the reflected glory of her favorite star. Latina couldn't help it if she was so excited and startled by the 12:30 bell that she hurled her luncheon remains from her seat to the waste- basket ten yards away. And she certainly couldn't help it if it hit one girl, and scattered its contents in all directions. But all the same, as she rushed off to the Gym she felt rather like the onion fyou know, strong but full of tearsl. In Gym the tap dancing was slightly less vigorous than the Danish exer- cises, which made her feel as if there must be something wrong in Denmark. With an emptiness of heart Cand headj Miss Studentnagle traveled on to Lab period, for which she had a special weakness. But today it seemed boring, she broke only one test tube. Her decided improvement, which bored her, pleased her kind teacher, Magister Esse, who with a First rate and a friendly pat on the head, left Latina speechless. The afternoon trolley ride was no different from the morning's, save that the voices of all Cour heroine's includedj reached an unbelievably feverish pitch, beside which the morning's commotion had been trivial. The evening meal was a happy one, and Latina Q. Studentnagle dallied blissfully in the bosom of her family. At last by seven o'clock she could post- pone her studying no longer. That evening she had chosen a suitable musical program by which to study. It put her in just the right mood Cbut unfortu- nately not for studyingj. The studying, however, seemed to be too great a tax on Latina's limited strength, and having announced her intentions to her family, and having heard no objections, she retired to the local theater. Every movie was a rare treat to Latty because she went to one so seldom. With her studying she managed only about four a week. After the cinema she returned home, slid into bed, and into blissful sleep. She slept, dreaming of Elysian fields and the morrow's tests-two D's or not two D's, that was the question.
