THE ATHLETIC CLUB Our spirits, held in check so carefully during recitations, eagerly await the outlet of the afternoon activities sponsored by the Athletic Club to give vent to lustful cheering for our team mates participating in some form of sport. Year by year the Athletic Club has been attracting more members because of the in- creasing variety of activities offered. This year's program has been packed full of enjoyment with members of the club romping over the newly acquired hockey fieldg exerting energy on the basketball courts with views of evening up the score with the faculty for the de- feat in '36: swinging tennis rackets in the annual tournament, preceded by deck tennis and badminton tournaments: and gallivanting over the baseball dia- mond, all in season. In addition there are the year-round sports of swimming at the Y. W. C. A., topped off by a meet, and horseback riding at Weld Farm. which furnishes a show in the spring. The outstanding athletes of the class of '37 proved to be R. Anderson, J. Chase, F. Dine, B. Marson, and S, Puleo. fpage Sixty-onej

THE ATHENIAN CLUB Inconceivable as it may seem, the Girls' Latin School once had no outside organization for either recreational or educational purposes. About twenty- three years ago a small group of girls decided to remedy this condition. To- ward this end, then, they built the foundation of our Athenian Club. In 1914 it consisted of merely a literary and debating club: now it has, in addi- tion, five other departments: the art, athletic, dramatic, nature, and Red Cross sections. The activities of the Athenian Club in the past year have been noteworthy. The first meeting was a C1et'together, when many girls enrolled as members and enjoyed the entertainment offered. Late in October came the I-lallowe'en party, a colorful masquerade. An entertainment in December took the form of a variety show in which great talent on the part of the performers was dis- played. During the month of March a touch of spring was brought to school when the Art Department of the Athenian Club presented a gay carnival. Just about the time when Barnum and Bailey came to town, the Athenian Club staged its own circus, which delighted many with its side shows and festive booths. Another chapter in Athenian Club history thus closes. To next year's Club we wish even greater success than was ours in l937. QPage Sixtyl

Gormley, M. Beatty. THE DEBATING CLUB lnspired by the success of last year's debating club, the group this year en- thusiastically anticipated an equally enjoyable year. Their program, under the able guidance of Miss Earle, consisted of monthly meetings at which there were discussions and debates, inter-school debates, and a declamation contest. Ellen Gavin, IIB2, again was selected to represent the Girls' Latin School in the city- wide contest. The first inter-school debate was held on December 4, the opposing team being from the Public Latin School, and the subject, Resolved, that Massachu- setts should adopt a Unicameral Legislature, Jean Towhill, Virginia Ber- nard, and Ellen Gavin supported the negative. Eleanor Marcus delivered the rebuttal. The sophomores were given an opportunity to prove their ability in a de- bate against the Roxbury Memorial High School for Girls, naming as a sub- ject, Resolved, that the government should control public utilities. Charlotte Slesinger, Helen Meltzer, and Bernice Lewis supported the affirmative. Again a Girls' Latin School debating team proved a difficult opponent in the debate with Reading High School on the subject, Resolved, that Congress should have the power to override the decisions of the Supreme Court by a two- thirds vote. Nanette Goldstein, Eleanor Driscoll, and Alice Murphy defended the negative of the issue, with Bette Berman, delivering the rebuttal. Probably the most successful meeting of the year was the last one. at which a mock-trial, written by Virginia Bernard and Adele Torf, was presented by mcmbers of the club. fpage Sixty-two?
