A Sonnet to a Rocking-chair llow many hast thou held in fond embrace, As to and fro o'er carpets thou hast gone, A hav'n of peace art thou to eve from dawn. Thy soothing swing and never tiring pace Full oft a weeping child with mournful face, Have stilled. This comfort ne'er we'd pawn. llut once thy scat, unlook'd for, chanced to yawn, As sev'ral hundred pounds with easy grace, Descended. Now thy remnants, far too weak For common use. by aid of glue rest0r'd Are gazed upon with awe by younger eyes. XYhilc in thy place. a rocker, new and sleek, With pride displays its charms. Alas! deplor'd Old rocking-chair, thou art a roost for flies. E l2I.lZAl'1E'l'H D. ENDLICH. 13

look of satisfaction at their work, and stole out of one door just in time to see Gwendolyn and her fated admirer enter by another. .....-...........-........................ I Two hours later. Dick and Johnnie, peeping out of the library door, espied the English dignitary leaving the house enshrouded in one of Mr. Forsythe's overcoats and wearing the most woebegone expression. Quickly and quietly Dick made his way to the drawing-room. There he found Gwendolyn, laughing and almost hysterical. Approaching her unseen, Dick knelt down beside her, and .............. ................ and... .... . ..... . The next june, one of the handsomest and most exclusive weddings took place in Philadelphia, that that city had ever seen. Curious people, perusing the society news column of the Public Ledger, were interested in reading the following announcement: Philadelphia's Famous Beauty VVedded! The marriage of Miss Gwendolyn R. Forsythe and Richard Chetwood. both of Philadelphia, caused a great sensation among the members of the smart set? It was thought that Sir Cliulmondoly Tuppington, Bar't, was to be the favored onef, lt then enlarged upon the magnificence of the decorations and the gorgeous array of gifts. as is the custom in such cases. And thus we find that cinnamon taffy has more uses than one. LILLIAN HALL. 12

Diary of a Colonial Belle Tuesday afternoon, june 4, 177Ogw::..' Y dear Polly! The most delightful thing has happened! When the mail was brought in today, among the letters was a pale lavender one, daintily perfumed and addressed to me. When I opened it, it contained an invitation from Anne Parton, to spend a week as her guest at a house party at her father's summer home along the river ba11k. Of course you know I will accept. All the young blades of the town, among them Annes brother Dick, Captain Hanford, Harry Hilliard and others. are invited and some of the girls whom you met at the Governors reception in spring. However, the greatest attraction is the young British officer, john Reynolds. He arrived at this port last week and has been feted and entertained as no handsome young man has ever been entertained in this town before. VVell, I will have to look over my frocks. and naturally select the most becoming ones, but there is no need to tell you that. No more now, as I shall be very busy. Thursday evening, June 6, 1770. ,I am almost too weary to sit and write a single word. I left Richmond this morning at seven o'clock, attended by my maid, and rode part of the way on my sorrel, Patsy, lt was almost eight when I reached the station where the stage-coach passes. There is no need to tell you of the long, tiresome journey with fellow passengers, entirely uninteresting. You would never have known that my gown was blue, for it was gray with the dust of the roads. I was almost stifled with the intense heat. At last, much to my relief, we reached the cross roads and found the family carriage of the Partons awaiting me. After luncheon I rested a bit and then dressed for the evening. I wore a pale blue dress, very simply made, but, though I do say it myself, I looked very well. At supper I met the handsome Englishman. To tell the truth, Polly, I am almost ready to vouch that he is the very, very handsomest young man my eyes ever rested upon. He is tall, but not too tall, with black, wavy hair and eyes of the clearest blue I have seen: and his manners! Our young men would do well if they would attempt to imitate him. After supper he was asked to sing. One of the girls whispered to me that he had an excellent singing voice. After a little coaxing on the part of the ladies he consented. He sang a sentimental little song and before he finished it, nearly all there had tears in their eyes. Friday, june 7, 1770. This morning I awoke early and found the sun streaming into my room. The birds were singing in the trees and everything seemed so lovely that I determined to get up before the rest and have a look around the old place. I walked across the piazza and stepped into the rose walk. I had gone only a short distance when I heard steps on the gravel walk. Thinking it was 14
