Approximately one-half of the student body is participating in music of some form. The department presented their annual Christmas concert on De- cember 18 and their spring concert was given on Hay 12. The music department furnishes music numbers for the Junior and senior plays, for the baccalaureate and comencenent ser- vices, as well as programs for various clubs. FOOTBALL For G.H.S. the 1958 football season was a rough one. The won and lost record will show one game won and seven lost, but the record does not tell everything for this team. In spite of their record the boys never gave up. This spirit in some of the underclass boys will help the 1959 team. There will be sixteen lettermen returning to next yea.r's squad. With the experience they gained from the past season, they hope to set a better record for G.H.S. next fall. The Cee Cee League was very strong and all of the teams had their ups and downs in a race that was close all of the ww. In league play our A team finished fourthand the B teamwas first. The great week of this year's basketball squad was the league tourney. Working hard all of the way the B team defeated Frontenac for first place Johnson, Blooncamp, 'ihitconb and the Cherokee boys set their position for a rebound. Karr goes in for a lay up shot while Wutke, Riggs, Oldham, Michael and the Cherokee team follow the action. Hutke attempts a basket from the corner as Glad, Oldham, Riggs and the Cherokee team stand hy. and the A team took care of College High for first place. The Girard team won two out of three games in the District Tournament at Pittsburg to place second and then went on to win third place in the Regional at Neodesha. It was a good year and next year looks better with a large number of good boys returning to the squad. GO, GO, GO! This year's squad had twelve boys who placed second in the league meet last year and some of them stepped up to first this season. The strength of the team was in the field events and the three relay teams. There were some very good boys in the middle distance events who also added to the point total. Many of the boys are working hard to get to the State Track Meet at Wichita in May and if their fine work continues some of them will make it. All of them showed ability of being good drivers and were given proper credit to se- cure a driver's license. All educational and state requirements were met :ln both classroom and in-the-car training. The county Driving Rodeo was won last spring for the second year in a row. This is more proof that the students in our high school are interested in safe and sane driving. Girard will be represented in the county Driving Rodeo this year and we are confident that our students will rank as well as in past years.
