The theme is ever upward, To reach the greatest heights, And as our compass and our guide, The ageless Bill of Rightsng For youth is in the cockpit, Its spirit running high, Determined to preserve the land, Where freedom shall ne'er die. A never faltering faith in God, A patriotism true, A pledge that we shall e'er protect, Our flag's red, white, and blue. Every senior class, from 1879 to 1941, has probably felt that its activities were a little more interesting, its work a little more difficult, and its experiences a little more important and exciting than those of other classes. But hearken to what a few well-known Girardians of earlier classes have to say about their school lives and activities. Grace Knight 0'Brien, of the class of 1914, recalls that the basketball team, of which she was a member, was practically unconquerable. In her junior year her class originated the tirst Junior-Senior Prom, entertaining three graduates. It was held at the Wilson Avenue Building. Grace Krehl Vogel sometimes feels that the nine girls who constituted the class of 190-t were the original Quiz Kids . Each week, at an assembly, Super- intendent Bower directed a quiz which was called General Exercise. This consisted of a thirty-minute test on such questions as: What and where is Reykjavick? How many pounds in a barrel of Hour? Who wrote 'I'hanatopsis '! XVe were tested and given a monthly grade on these questions, said Mrs. Vogel. Lulu Woodruff Teeter believes that not one member of the classes of '22 or '23 will t'orget the rivalry that existed between the two classes. After some one had painted the nu1ne1'als on the Wilson Avenue Building, the whole class of 1922 was suspended. In their softer moods they will remember such highlights as the operetta, The Yokohonm Maid, and the senior play. Better 'l'han Gold. Beatrice Bullen recalls the color rushes in which each class tried to fly its colors from a point higher than that from which the colors of the other classes were fiying. Much competition resulted, and the victorious class felt high and mighty. One by one the happy occasions new by and then--gradnation. This was a memorable event, for their graduation exercise was the first to be held in the new high school building. The graduates were indeed proud of this privilege. if Q Pnuc 7'lliriu-firc s I N, , w 'iii' r -1 5 - , w , , L JQN M, .,,.... W- -'A ' V .-........., In--..... Mushrush provided the crowd with a thrill when he took the opening kick-off and raced dfty-five yards for a touchdown. Girard's offense was the dominating factor in the flrst half, with Chicarelli scoring before the half ended. McDonald was held to two flrst downs in the last half, while Crooks scored the last touchdown for the Red and Black. The whole team deserves credit for a fine game, although the regulars saw only eight minutes of service. On Saturday night, September 22, the Indians journeyed to Struthers for a floodlight encounter. The first half saw Girard's backs running wild over Struthers. Mason and Mushrush each crossed the goal line. In the second quarter Chicarelli intercepted a pass and, aided by beautiful blocking, brought the crowd to its feet with a thrilling sixty-yard run. The second and third teams were used extensively in the last half, with Kleimo scoring for the Indians in the last quarter. The final score: Girard 33, Struthers 0. Girard played host to a strong Hubbard team on September 29. The Hubbard boys, a very much underrated team, gave the locals a tough fight throughout the game. The only touchdown came when Paolone recovered D. Katko's fumble in midair, and raced sixty yards for the score. The entire team played a good game with Richard's defensive line play featuring. The score was Girard 6, Hubbard 0. Girard traveled to Niles on October 11 to play its traditional rivals and, unfortunately, to suffer its flrst defeat. Girard's otensive machinery was not clicking, and the locals were held scoreless, although Penza, Richards, and Kingston played good defensive ball. The score: Niles 19, Girard 0. On Parent's Day, October 15, Girard clashed with Boardman on the home field. Girard encountered stiff resistance from the Spartans and yielded a touch- down in the first quarter. Mason evened the score in the second quarter, when he sprinted twenty-five yards for a touchdown after receiving a pass from Mushrush. The half ended with the score at 7-7. Boardman came blazing back and scored early in the third quarter to regain the lead. But Mushrush scored for the locals in the last quarter to make it thirteen all. The Indians played the South High Warriors on October 18, -and lost a heartbreaker. The Red and Black enjoyed a 6-0 lead after Moore scored on taking a pass from Chicarelli. But South tied up the game in the third quarter when DeMichael drove over from the two-yard line. Girard captured the lead again when Andrew Massuri, playing in his first game, calmly drop-kicked a fleld goal from the twelve-yard line. The Indians then had a 9-6 advantage: but late in the fourth quarter, one of Chicarel1i's passes was intercepted deep in Girard territory. South scored fouraplays later, taking a 12-9 lead, which they held to the end. ,i N1- Girard trekked to East Liverpool on October 25 and lost a close one to the Potters. The locals, unable to muster their defense, yielded two touchdowns in the first half to be on the wrong end of a 13-0 score. But in the latter half the Indians made a dazzling comeback. Hungerford, Smotrilla, and De Pietro featured on line plays, and Mushrush scored on a lateral from Wilson for Girard's first touchdown. A few minutes later, the Indians missed another score when Mushrush was stopped only inches from the goal. Late in the fouzth quarter, Mason scanrpered for a touch- down on afake punt, but the kick for that vital extra point was 'blocked On November 2, Girard broke its losing streak with a 6-0 win over Wellsville. The most exciting play offthe game came in the first quarter when Mushrush dashed around end and broke away for a beautiful eighty-yard touchdown run. The rest of the game was good old-fashioned straight football with Girard playing a fine defensive game. The Indians showed considerable strength as they threw back the opponents with repeated losses.
