'P 'P 'P 'P -an 'Q 'I n This year marks the first time in the history of the school in which an attempt was made to organize grade school students into basket- ball squads. Primarily instituted for the purpose of establishing a 'feedern system of players from the grade school to the high school it has succeeded well. The boys attended two outside tournaments and gave an invitational tournament of their own in addition to playing twenty other games. In all the boys played twenty-eight games and won twenty-one of them. Having gained knowledge of the game, lessons in sportsmanship and valuable experience this year we feel that these boys will make better candidates for the nAa squads of tomorrow. -1 35 'QTE- fi A ' ' ' ,, , , . . , .s.........,.,,..m-,, ..,,,.a W , .-., . GRADE SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM Standing 1 to r Melba Sue Williams, Alfreida Taylor, Peggy Long Mr Welborn, Bertha Mae Beam, Gloria Ruth Dickerson Kneeling 1 to r Herschel Williams, Donnelle Young, Wanda Cheyne, Charlotte Hollingshead, Nellie Hilton This year for the first time we have had organized sports for the grade school in an attempt to develop the body as well as the mind. Sportsmanship and the will to win have been our goal along with developing skills. During the year the girls attended two outside tournaments and gave an invitational tournament of their ownk The girls played for Consolation in two of the tournaments and lost to Spur on both occasions. The girls have played about twenty games during the year and have gained valuable experience from them. Although the records only show four games won, the girls have had one of the best attitudes that could be asked fgr by anyone. May the experience and sportsmanship make them better players and citizens of tomorrow. A 36 Q in I 1 A F' I 'H W r f ' .5? '1 ' A s A . : :,, 55. i -1 i in 5 7 'I , f 'Y n Q o Q 0 U .. The girls won the second place trophy in dlstrict Eight B and were beaten out in their district tournament only by the district win ners in a close game The Cardinal girl club also won the second place trophy in the Dickens tournament Probably the brightest moment of their successful season came when the girls defeated the highly touted Jayton girls in the final game of the Deacock tournament to bring home that first place trophy Although the three girls who graduate from the team will b greatly missed, Girard is assured of a winning team next year by the fine players who remain. In closing let us say thanks and congratula- tions for a season of sportsmanship and wins of which we can all be proud. 38 ....., - nassaui: 'W' , -.-4 i , -4 1 V 1 f i Q - I4 'N ....... ..... ., . ..... ,- 4- , 4 7 . ,A ILL ..- - r o O Q I . o O I I ,., T' A s ..
