Nu yy ’ Me Se ” Mae e : ny Ya ; —— i DR. JOHN A. LANDER PRESIDENT To the Class of 1985: Girard College expresses appreciation for the contributions you have made to our school. It is our hope that your Girard experience has made each one of you a strong personality ready and able to deal effectively with the challenges which life will present. You are now entering the Alumni of this great school which gives you the opportunity to share a unique fellowship which defies definition. You must become a part of this great and vital tradition. I should like to record here the charge which has been given for many years to the members of the graduating class as part of the Commencement Exercises: “Sons of Girard, I charge you now, and in the days to come, to be truly sons of Girard: to prove yourselves worthy of this name, never to betray the trust which the Founder placed in you; to use in the building of your lives what you have learned here--not only the knowledge gained, but the qualities of character which have been developed--an understanding of your fellow man, loyalty and devotion to country and all it represents, and love and reverence for your God. You may not all have the opportunities to be heroes, but you canall manifest nobility of character. You may not all bring forth world-shaking ideas, but you can all express intelligence and integrity and loving kindness. Just as the lives of those Girardians who have preceeded you may serve as an inspiration to you, so you may, in turn, not only inspire the generations of Girardians which are to follow, but be an influence for good upon all whom your lives will touch.” May your achievements bring honor to you and to Girard College and may life be good to you! John A. Lander po President ) MR. GEORGE H. KELLER JR. DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION Dear Members of the Class of 1985: Whether you have been at Girard for twelve years or four, I hope you take with you some important skills necessary to your pursuit of a successful life. Naturally, | would include such educational skills as an ability to do basic mathematical computations and to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. I would hope you have some understanding of how the natural work works and of the historical and societal forces which shape the world in which you live. These are basic tools, but tools are worthless unless they are used by someone who has a vision of what is to be accomplished and the confidence and perseverance to see the task to completion. Your intellectual skills will not serve you well unless you have a goal and are willing to devote yourself to reaching that goal in spite of difficulties, disappointments, andother obstacles. And so, I hope you take with you qualities of character which will enable you to take your skills, develop and expand them, and use them in the attainment of your life goals. Finally, | hope you have learned to appreciate people as individuals, to enrich your lives with things of beauty, to value honesty, and to be open to new experiences and ideas. May God bless you. George H. Keller, Jr. Mea Director of Educate Ye of = HEP += 6) STEVEN B. YOUNG OIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE To the Class of 1985: Congradulations! Your day has finally arrived. You and your families can be proud of your accomplishment. Graduation, however, is not so much an end as it is a beginning. It symbolizes the passage from childhood to adulthood. New challenges now await you. I can think of no greater reward for this community than for you to successfully apply the lessons learned at Girard to these selfsame challenges. Take with you as you go the qualities which so marked you in my mind, your independence, your occasional stubborness, and your strength of character. Above all else, as you pass through the years ahead, “to thine own self be true.” Best wishes and may you achieve all that you are deserving of. Stephen B. I have learned more about Girard this year, more than any other. | found through negotiation and cooperation much can be achieved, Keeping good ties with the administration and staff will make Girard life much more tolerable. In your later years at Girard, you'll find that defiance will get you nowhere Girard College has more to offer than any other school. Girard’s resources are endless. | hope the future classes will utilize more of these resources. While at Girard, take advantage while you can. Obtain the best education possible. In the end, if you have not taken advantage, you will regret it. Don’t be one of the bad apples because Girard will only root you out A frequent mistake we all make is starting over toc late. For the younger people, if your grades aren't so great, get on the ball. Start using all of your potentia Don't let opportunity pass you by. The older quys don’t have time on their side; they must fully utilize all available time. Before you know it, you'll be applying for colleges and wonder why you can't go to the college of your choice. Don't settle for C's when you are cabable of earning B's. Your performance in high school is extremely important for your college acceptance lf Girard has tought me anything, it has tought me that [ and | alone am responsible for obtaining a sound education. In college, what you learn at Girard will perpare you for this. In closing, | would like to say, although Girard and | have had our differences, | hold some of my finest memories at Girard. | have spent a good portion of my life at Girard. | am anxious to leave, but yet my heart finds space for saddness. Each one of us has our own plans after graduation. Some will goon tocollege while others will enter the working world No matter what your goals are, all of you possess center qualities which will definitely be an asset to you in your life. You have proven this time and time again. | would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone of you the best of luck with your future plans. Don't forget your classmates, especially the ones who couldn't make it to graduate with us. ¥ We were fifteen who were able to withstand the pressures of school and life. Many found quicker ways to deal with the pressure. Some just dropped out. We have succeeded where they failed. We have every right to be proud of our accomplishment In closing! would like to thank the class for allowing me to be your president for bothJunior and Senior years. We have had our share of good and bad times, it seems bad more than good, but we stuck together like a class we graduate We always had a strong bond in our class, one that willlast long after . , Maybe one day we'll have the chance to prove it.
