Thank you for being there when we needed you: Goodbye from the Class of 1984. ae Letter from the President To the Class of 1984 Girard College expresses appreciation for the contributions you have made to our school. It is our hope that Girard has given you faith in yourselves and a vision of service which you can render to society. You are about to enter the Alumni and to sharea fellowship which is difficult for anyone to define for you. You must now become a part of a great and vital tradition. I should like to record here the charge which has been given for many years to the members of the graduating class as part of the Commencement Exercises: “Sons of Girard, I charge you now, and in the days to come, to be truly sons of Girard: to prove yourselves worthy of this name, never to betray the trust which the Founder placed in you; to use in the building of your lives what you have learned here--not only the knowledge gained, but the qualities of character which have been developed--an understanding of your fellow man, loyalty and devotion to country and all it represents, and love and reverance for your God. You may not all have the opportunity to be heroes, but you can all manifest nobility of character. You may not all bring forth world-shaking ideas, but you can all express intelligence and integrity and loving kindness. Just as the lives of those Girardians who have preceeded you may serve as an inspiration to you, so may you, in turn, not only inspire the generations of Girardians which are to follow, but be an influence for good upon all whom your lives will touch.”’ May your achievements bring honor to you and to Girard College and may life be good to you! John A. Lander President Message from dr. Keller To the Class of 1984: It is always difficult to say, “Goodbye,” and I have given you all the advice I have to offer. Ican honestly say that you have grown and matured tremendously in the last few months of your senior year. Individually and as a class you possess considerable talent and potential in many and varied areas. You have begun to recognize your personal responsibility for developing that potential and to open yourselves to others who can and want to assist you. You are entering a new and far more competitive arena whether it be college, technical school, or the work force. You will be judged almost solely on two related criteria - attitude, and results. American businesses and institutions have been floundering under the burden of low productivity. By that, I mean workers and producers are not committed to doing their best on the job, of turning out the finest product possible, of giving of themselves beyond what is absolutely required of them. Pride is the rather old- fashioned word for what is lacking - pride in oneself, in the product of one’s skill and labor. There are many signs that the situation is beginning to change. You will have a great advantage if you decide that, to paraphrase the Reverend Jesse Jackson, you are somebody, if you are proud of who and what you are, and if you will settle for no less than the best you are capable of doing whether it be on an acedemic assignment or a job assignment. You have my fondest best wishes. May God bless each of you. George H. This year the business course at Girard was reinstated after a two year absence. Although the business courses had previously been the least popular of the vocational trades, this year’s was competitive in number with any other shop. In business the students learned skills in typing, computer science, and accounting. Farewell and good luck next year. FAREWELL SONG GIRARD COLLEGE Ilexnry Hannay Hay a’ Becxet-Banks Martial 1. Each person in the class helps to make up the character of the class. As aclass we were willing to work with the staff and the Administration and to learn from past experiences, both successes and failures. As individuals the class is made up of many somewhat serious people, some of whom admit to it and some who do not. This is not negative but positive. If it was not for the somewhat serious Girard would have been dead. Everyone in the class has achieved high goals either on the athletic field or in the classroom and we will continue to achieve our goals. Our class has a strong bond of unity, which makes us unique. Classes before have also had strong bonds, but not as strong as ours. We support each other as brothers and we are willing to learn and succeed. There has not been a class like “1984”, and never will there be another. I have enjoyed having the opportunity of serving as the Senior Class President. I hope I have lived up to yo ur expectations. Remember, to be successful, set goals and work to achieve them. If they are your goals, your work will make you happy. Even setbacks can be opportunities for growth. Good luck. May God be with you. Ardour Keith Koenig’ Senior Class President Letter from the Student Body President Fellow Girardians, : % It has been a great pleasure to serve as your president this year. This position has been a challenging but wonderful experience. I’ve learned many things about Girard which I'd never realized before. 7 Currently Girard is in a rebuilding stage and is becoming a very competitive school. This year was the first step in that direction . The school’s many positive accomplishments are visible proof of that. There are still many factors that need to be improved before Girard reaches her goals such as, improving school spirit, fostering a more positive attitude towards Girard, setting higher academic goals, etc. Although these goals may seem unimportant to you, they can turn Girard oe completely if they are achieved. With the help of the future teachers and you these goals can sure : be accomplished. Girard and its students have the potential to become one of the best in this pant 0 the country, and they will if each student directs himself to that goal. You are not asked to all become honor-roll students or outstanding athletes; all you’re asked to do is to be yourself and work to be outstanding in whatever you do best. In other words have a definite goal. Having a goal will motivate you through Girard and also life. . . Take advantage of the opportunities which are available here to you. These advantages are not available to many. sue es and your education are extremely important make the most out of Girard. Take more that it’s given. In your mind only you sho be important, so don’t let any interference get in your way towards success. In conclusion I would like to thank Mr. Joseph Devlin who served as the faculty advisor to the student council. He was always there regardless of his valuable time to help and guide the school towards its goals. I would also like to show my gratitude to everyone who supported my efforts throughout this school Hess esis pane a class I would like to wish you all luck and may God guide you throughout life. “Have faith and farewell” from the Cle God bless you all. iin ++ 7 - Pr foes it Ali M. On September 12, 1983, I met with the candidates for the Varsity soccer team on the Varsity soccer field. The first thing I said was that since we didn’t have an organized soccer team at Girard in 1982, it would mean starting from scratch. I had only four days to get the fellows in good, physical playing condition for the first game. To make it a winning team, all l asked from them was cooperation, and we could pull through. I received their assurance and we started with skills and drills, both individual and pattern plays. I was very pleased at the way the players caught on so quickly and it allowed me to hurry from one drill to the next. By the end of the season our team was playing like pros. Their behavior was excellent and they were a credit to Girard College. We, Girard College, have two firsts to celebrate. The first one is that I, James Jimmie) Mills, experienced coaching a 100% colored starting team for the first time in my career. The other first is that Girard won the Penn-Jersey Soccer League Championship with that same combination for the first time in the history of the league. I am very pleased and proud of my achievements in my career and in the 1983 season. With so many sophomores on the team, [am already looking forward to another No. | spot in the Penn-Jersey League in 1984. All I can say is thanks for a job well done and good luck to the graduating seniors. Coach Mr. James Mills Girard 2—Katz. Y The cross-country team had a rebuilding year in ’83 after recovering from a strike year, which cancelled the ’82 season, and also the loss of three top runners; Tony Williams (undefeated in the Penn-Jersey in ’81), Ken Annand, and Rich Bennett. With the loss of leadership, I had to guess who would be on the team for the ’83 season; and to my surprise, came Garrett Brisbane (asenior), who filled Tony William’s shoes as he also went undefeated in the Penn-Jersey in ’83 and also set a new course record of 15:59 for three miles, shattering Tony William’s old record. The team overall had three wins and eleven losses. Also, I have found a solid nucleus for the future with Jonathon Stewart (9th grader), Mike Smith (7th grader), Fred Demski (7th grader), Mike Swords (9th grader), Frank Lewis (10th gra der), Scott Bennett (10th grader), Dimitri Thorpe (10th grader), Adam O’Donnelk (8th grader), Mark Andrews (8th grader), and holding them together was Tyrone Patton - Manager. Everything seemed fine until members dropped out one after another for academic reasons. After a few dual matches into the season, The Platoon shrank to 6 full-time members. These dedicated young wrestlers entered matches in which they had given up 36 points due to empty spots. But that didn’t discourage these soldiers. They won individually one after another. Toward the end of the season in a.dual meet with PSD, The Rally.Cup which has been passed between Girard and their school for many years was won by Girard. This was a great encouragement when they entered The Penn-Jersey Championships. Only three were victorious. They were Ali Atefi, Steve Holland, and Odell Kyler, who showed their true inner strength and dedication. Good luck to next year’s young team. They show a great deal of hope for a championship team. 54 —_-- mmo geet on of Left to Right, First Row: Michael Leatherbury, Barry L. Going into the season, the coaching staff knew we had our work ahead of us. We also felt we had the talent, if not the experience, to play with anyone. After going 0-4, the team proved that we really did have the talent and was starting to gain the experience. We won the next four games to even our record, but more importantly we became the champions of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf Christmas Tournament. In becoming the champions we beat a team which had beaten us just six days before. This set the tone for the rest of the season. The team worked and played some very good basketball. For a team of young people who were not supposed to achieve very much, a 14-14 record, a Christmas Tournament Championship, and a trip to the playoffs is very nice season indeed. I thank the squad for their hard work, dedicat ion, cooperation, and staying off of ineligibility. I look forward to a better season next year. Good luck to the Class of 1984. Mr. David R. They greatly improved their skills as the season progressed. Both the swimmers and divers refined their techniques and developed more strength and confidence. If they continue to improve at the same rate, Girard will have some top swimmers and divers in a few years. Good luck to the Class of 1984. This year the hockey team again became champions of the Challange Cup Series between Girard and Glen Mills. Although the seniors were kept from participating in the middle of the season, the team still held together and finished with a winning record of 6 - 1. The ’84-’85 team should again become champions with the excellent talent the team will still have. Farewell and good luck next year. t, David Sutton, Shawn Rudy, David Tyler. This year the Varsity Baseball team had a new coach, Mr. Joseph Gibbons, and he has done a magnificent job with this very young team. They are undefeated in the Penn-Jersey Conference with an 8-0 record and heading for a Championship year. Not only would this be the first championship for a Girard Baseball team in years but also the first winning season in some time. This baseball team has made Girard proud and proud it wili stay with most of its members returning next season. Thank you Mr. Gibbons and good luck next year. The members of the 1984 Girard College varsity track team once again upheld their winning ways, although we didn’t win the Penn-Jersey Championships. The soldiers finished four points behind Katzenback to become the 1984 runner-ups,but it was no easy win. As usual, we took it to the wire. I'd like to thank my young men for a job well done. Although we'll be losing our four top scorers: Garrett Brisbane, Steven Mcleod, Arthur Coieman, and Robert Lee, we'll return next year. 60 Left to right; First row: James Wainer, Erik Lewis, Tyrone Patton, Lee Sheldon. The team’s record was better this year than in the past recent years with us winning a few matches and scoring much higher in the Penn- Jersey Championships.
