Noy ‘i , : Donk ee | | | To the Class of June 1983: I should like to record in your yearbook the thanks and appreciation of Girard College for the positive | contribution you have made to this school. It was unfortunate that your Senior year was interrupted for such a long period of time and that you were therefore denied so much that previous classes enjoyed. However, you returned for the second half of the year determined to make the best of a bad situation. You are to be commended for your restraint, your loyalty and for doing so very well in a half year what others have had a whole year to accomplish. You are stronger and the school is stronger because the Class of 1983, though a small group, did big things in spite of great odds. | should like to record here the charge which has been given for many years to the members of the graduating ; class as part of the Commencement Exercises: “Sons of Girard, | charge you now, and in the days to come, to be truly sons of Girard: to prove yourselves worthy of this name, never to betray the trust which the Founder placed in you; to use in the building of your lives what you have learned here not only the knowledge gained, but the qualities of character which have been developed - an understanding of your fellow man, loyalty and devotion to country and all it represents, and love and reverence for your God. You may not all have the opportunity to be her oes, but you can all manifest nobility of character. You may not all bring forth world-shaking ideas, but you can all express intelligence and integrity and loving kindness. Just as the lives of those Girardians who have preceeded you may serve as an inspiration to you, so may you, in turn, not only inspire the generations of Girardians which are to follow, but also be an influence for good upon all whom your lives will touch.” May your achievements bring honor to you and to Girard College and may life be good to you! To the Class of 1983: We are all tested repeatedly in life, not in those times and things which go well, but in our setbacks and adversities. It is in dealing with the latter that we grow in character, perspective, and understanding. How well we cope with life’s disappointments and difficulties is one measure of our maturity. Certainly, you, as individuals and as a Class, have been sorely tested this year. Plans, hopes, and expectations have been shattered by events over which you had no control. Disappointments, frustrations, and bitterness have, at times, made it difficult for you to deal with everyday events in school and in the household. Yet, this has also been a time of growth for you. You have, for the most part, dealt maturely with events as they unfolded. You have worked hard to provide leadership for the student body and you have tried to be positive and constructive in meeting your responsibilities. You have learned that, in life, we sometimes become involved in situations which we cannot control and that, in such circumstances, we must not allow the situation to control us. Perhaps, these and other lessons you have learned this year are ultimately more valuable than those you would have learned in the classes which did not meet. Soon after you returned to Girard, Joe Swords and John Chambers interviewed me for the Girard News. As we were finishing, Joe said, “I wish you could have really known our class.” So do I. Our time together has been all too brief. | have come to like you and respect you and to appreciate qualalities and potentials in you which I hope you will continue to develop.
