Jackson Noy ‘i , : Donk ee | | | To the Class of June 1983: I should like to record in your yearbook the thanks and appreciation of Girard College for the positive | contribution you have made to this school. It was unfortunate that your Senior year was interrupted for such a long period of time and that you were therefore denied so much that previous classes enjoyed. However, you returned for the second half of the year determined to make the best of a bad situation. You are to be commended for your restraint, your loyalty and for doing so very well in a half year what others have had a whole year to accomplish. You are stronger and the school is stronger because the Class of 1983, though a small group, did big things in spite of great odds. | should like to record here the charge which has been given for many years to the members of the graduating ; class as part of the Commencement Exercises: “Sons of Girard, | charge you now, and in the days to come, to be truly sons of Girard: to prove yourselves worthy of this name, never to betray the trust which the Founder placed in you; to use in the building of your lives what you have learned here not only the knowledge gained, but the qualities of character which have been developed - an understanding of your fellow man, loyalty and devotion to country and all it represents, and love and reverence for your God. You may not all have the opportunity to be her oes, but you can all manifest nobility of character. You may not all bring forth world-shaking ideas, but you can all express intelligence and integrity and loving kindness. Just as the lives of those Girardians who have preceeded you may serve as an inspiration to you, so may you, in turn, not only inspire the generations of Girardians which are to follow, but also be an influence for good upon all whom your lives will touch.” May your achievements bring honor to you and to Girard College and may life be good to you! John A. Lander President To the Class of 1983: We are all tested repeatedly in life, not in those times and things which go well, but in our setbacks and adversities. It is in dealing with the latter that we grow in character, perspective, and understanding. How well we cope with life’s disappointments and difficulties is one measure of our maturity. Certainly, you, as individuals and as a Class, have been sorely tested this year. Plans, hopes, and expectations have been shattered by events over which you had no control. Disappointments, frustrations, and bitterness have, at times, made it difficult for you to deal with everyday events in school and in the household. Yet, this has also been a time of growth for you. You have, for the most part, dealt maturely with events as they unfolded. You have worked hard to provide leadership for the student body and you have tried to be positive and constructive in meeting your responsibilities. You have learned that, in life, we sometimes become involved in situations which we cannot control and that, in such circumstances, we must not allow the situation to control us. Perhaps, these and other lessons you have learned this year are ultimately more valuable than those you would have learned in the classes which did not meet. Soon after you returned to Girard, Joe Swords and John Chambers interviewed me for the Girard News. As we were finishing, Joe said, “I wish you could have really known our class.” So do I. Our time together has been all too brief. | have come to like you and respect you and to appreciate qualalities and potentials in you which I hope you will continue to develop. Well boys...you have my best wishes. George H. Keller, Jr. Director of Education — Administration f = eee - - TOP ROW: P. Stetson, S. Young, J. Rothfuss, G. Keller, B. Konopka, K. Dave Tyler, Ken Annand, Phil Brown, Joe Reilly, Joe Swords, Don Throughout the years, the students of the print shop have secured employment following their training at Girard College. Printing opportunities are still plentiful even though our country is suffering a high rate of unemployment. The on-the-job training the students receive enables them to have a realistic view of work procedures in most printing plants. The print shop takes pride on being called upon to fulfill almost all the College’s printing requirements. Each student participates in our production schedule and sees his work being displayed in every area of the campus. This year book exemplifies the nature of the student’s originality and skill along with his memoirs of his last year spent at Girard. I wish the class of 1983 all the success and good fortune they deserve. Mr. Rocco P. In this age of computers, more and more draftsmen are required by industry to design and draw parts required for the manufacture of computers. Design for the programming of the software must also be done by the draftsman. There is a place for you in industry even in these days when positions are hard to find so let’s get down to business and learn the fundamentals of the trade! The facilities are here for both mechanical and architectural drafting instruction so why not make use of them? Moore sos crooks Fellow Students, Although my tenure was short, unfulfilled, and sometimes miserable, I thank you for the opportunity of being yo president. The care-less attitude however, of the people who probably won’t even read this letter and should, ha left os little room to stabilize or improve our current position. — Leaders are often restricted in speaking the way they truly feel. Being truthful about your postion in the future, | unfortunately have to confess that your out-look is dismal. I can only ask you to prevail and have strong school spirit Build positive character in one another and become a well-balanced nucleus, then you will be able to control your destiny However, I would be a liar and a fool to say all of the twelve years I’ve spent here have been bad. More so than not the contact with you, the faculty, and administrators, has been both rewarding and beneficial. I sincerely hope these times are remembered more than the negative ones after I’m gone. In closing, I would like to express my deepest congratulations to my classmates and our parents. May God be good to you in all future ventures. Joseph M. Reilly Student Body President Classmates, We are just another class in the world to graduate, but in Girard we, the Class of 1983, have made changes; we have fought for success, even though we have run into difficulties that all people face. I feel that our class of outstanding young men have made a mold to be pressed through by the following classes. We as a Class had to fight the hardest transition of any class at Girard. The class had put up with the worst strike encountered in‘ Girard, or in any other school, public or parochial. This has ruined many students, especially the senior class. For we had to get ready for a college or job within less than a year. As a student who went through Girard for twelve years, I have managed many things. Girard has ripped my classmates and | off of one or more years of an education, and Girard is supposed to be the best around. Our class is just another class that was not prepared to understand, deal, or manage with “the outside world.” My class and | feel that any school or business must have a strong foundation. Without such structure, the rest of the construction is incomplete or unsuccessful. Speaking for the class, I would like to say thanks to Girard for the possibility to have been a student here at Girard. Girard is a school that has many opportunities for its students. | would hope that each student at Girard would take advantage of these opportunities. John F.P. They entered the school at troubled times, and watched to grow into a thought-to-be fine school, only to be disillusioned in our last year of command. One thing find amazing is how these men found a way to keep their sanity. We have seen our ex-classmates, boys who were only trying to find a good life, either quitting because they couldn’t continue at Girard, or getting kicked out because the adminstration felt “they weren't a favorable asset to the Girard community.” We have learned many things at Girard, stuff that we will never forget, and stuff that we will try to block out of our heads and never retrieve. But, in 1983, the Soldiers of Girard came back to fulfill a dream to be the first team at Girard to wina track title in the history of the Penn-Jersey Conference. The 12 young horsemen performed unlimited talents to crush all opponents in their way to be number one. I personally would like to thank each and every one of my young soldiers (as we are known) for a beautiful and successful track season. May success continue to follow them through life. A special thanks to head J.V. coach, Mr. Brian Ruth, for an outstanding job this season. Reilly The Varsity baseball season began with three consecutive “Neutron Bombs” being dropped upon us by three far superior teams. At the conclusion, the only things still untouched were the green grass, the Armory and our spirit. Out of this holocaust, has emerged the Phoenix of Team togetherness, enjoyment of participation, anticipation of each new game and (along with slightly lowered expectations for a season “in the black”) a visceral appreciation for the great effort put forth by this young, inexperienced team. The Penn-Jersey Conference play-offs are yet within our grasp and, with the steady improvement of each individual on the team, their dedication and their co-operation, Girard College will be a team soon to be reckoned with. It has been my distinct pleasure to associate with some of the finest, most entertaining and dedicated MEN I’ve seen in recent years on this campus. WE ARE A TEAM! It’s with pride in having known them and with a certain sadness in seeing them graduate that I bid farewell to the seniors — Tennie James and Joe Reilly. Farewell and God Speed. A game... asport ... competition... a workout ...asocial escape...a livelihood. Tennis is what we want it to be. It means all things to all people. All players are unique in their individual styles and destinies; I hope that I have been able to give my players the basis to pursue their goals as far as they wish in this life-long sport, and that future talent will continue to feed into the program.
