Aiken, S || (Director of Education) | Dr. Robert M. Aiken The Class of 1982 would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Robert M. Aiken for all that he has contributed towards making our last year at Girard a pleasant one. Dr. Aiken has consistently displayed understanding and respect towards our class, virtues we greatly admired. He never failed to set a good example, and was always willing to help us when we had difficulties. The Class will long remember the meals we shared with Dr. and Mrs. Aiken and the graciousness they showed us. Dr. Aiken, your abundant school spirit and pride have revealed to us what it means to bea Girardian. The Class of 1982 wishes you and Mrs. Aiken all the luck and blessings that God has to offer. We sincerely hope that in the future we can make you as proud of us as we are of you. : - In Appreciation... Mr. Rocco P. Serluco Instructor of Printing Mr. Robert Fisher The Class of 1982 would like to express its deepest appreciation to Mr. Rocco Serluco. Mr. Serluco, you have been an inspiration to all of us. Through your fine example you have shown us what it truly means to be analumnus. We are sincerlely grateful for your understanding, caring, and willingness to help. We would also like to thank you for your invaluable assistance with the yearbook. We wish you well, Mr. Serluco! The Class of 1982 would also like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Robert Fisher, who has both assisted and guided us during our stay in Bordeaux Hall. Your thoughtful guidance has surely steered us in the right direction. Your sense of humor has endeared you to the Class and will be fondly remembered in the years to come. Once again, our deepest appreciation, Mr. Fisher! We wish you luck in all future endeavors. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT To the Class of 1982: If you have cooperated with us and exerted effort, Girard College has given you the basic fundamentals and habits that will enable you to earn a living and to continue with higher education; it has started you on the path to clear thinking; it has encouraged tolerance and cooperation to develop good citizenship; and above all, it has sought to make you men of integrity. If you have done your part, you have a sound foundation upon which to build a useful and happy life. I should like to record here the charges which have been given for many years to the members of the graduating class as part of the Commencement Exercises: “Sons of Girard, I charge you now, and in the days to come, to be truly sons of Girard: to prove yourselves worthy his name, never to betray the trust in which the Founder placed you; to use in the building of your lives what you have learned here — not only the knowledge gained, but the qualities of character which have been developed — an understanding of your fellow man, loyalty and devotion to country and all it represents, and love and reverence for your God. You may not all have the opportunity to be heroes, but you can all manifest nobilty of character. You may not all bring forth world-shaking ideas, but you can all express intelligence and integrity and loving kindness. Just as the lives of those Girardians who have preceded you may serve as an inspiration to you, so may you, in turn, not only inspire the generations of Girardians which are to follow, but also be an influence for good upon all whom your lives will touch.” May your achievements bring honor to yourself and to Girard College and may life be good to you. Dr. John A. Your straightforward manner and willingness to help others have inspired hundreds of Girard boys. Through your understanding and selflessness you have gained the respect of everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing you. It was a very rare occasion, indeed, when a student in need of aid could not find you in your classroom after school. Your keen sense of humor and good natured quips made class interesting and entertaining. Many “Hummers” have profited from your genius in the field of mathematics. a Mr. Shuster, you will never be forgotten by our class. Treat yourself so gently though the task is often hard, Man is not a god it seems, who holds the final card. Close your eyes and feel the darkness, speak and hear the sound, We only catch a glimpse of all the life that is around. The man is not alive who knows the value of his soul, And when our lives are pulled away, there’s more to fill the hole. I wonder what you’d think if all the changes didn’t come, For growing old is only going back to where you’re from. Far beyond our senseless thoughts there lies a core of gold Where essence of the newborn child is waiting in the old. The Master Plan is well conceived, it’s there for all to see, And each day that is spent in thought is living harmony. Reach into the depths of being, pass beyond the years Time is lost in stillness, where there are no hopes and fears. Linger in the void, and like a beacon in the night Purity will fill your soul with ever-present light. Everything you seek is waiting patiently within, For growing old is only going back to where you've been. MISSING: Assistant Coach David McKay) Although the four seniors , six juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen on this year’s varsity team got off to aslow start, winning only one of their first five games, it wasn’t long before they really began to play like a team. With everyone hustling on‘the field and helping each other out, there was an impressive effort that paid off as our superstars compiled eight consecutive shutout victories, seven of which were league games. The seventh shutout gave the G.C. soccer team its first Penn-Jersey Championship since 1976. The team’s league record was eight wins - one loss - one tie; the eighth win secured the team championship. Thanks to our dedicated coach, Mr. James Mills and his assistant, Mr. David McKay, the soccer team acquired the skills needed to retain the title next season. 48 Robert Trotter and Mr. James Mills o8-I[86I SNOIdWVHO AdSHaA-NNdd rate] a re ee (m7 ee ene en 2 8) ee we Lee be 4-28 © -e© 7 A™. The cross country team was a success due to the dedication, enthusiasm and team spirit so apparent this year. Next year’s team will be stronger than ever with returning starters from the junior, sophomore and freshmen classes. With the continued guidance of Mr. Gibbons and more of the hard work we saw this year, next year’s “Roadrunners” should be able to take home the coveted Penn-Jersey trophy. Good luck to the 1982-1983 team and many thanks to Mr. Gibbons for all of his help. Although this year’s wrestling team had an overall losing record of two wins, twelve losses and one tie, there were some outstanding players: Joe Reilly, Kevin Chambers and James Ragin. Reilly captured the 138 pound championship along with Ragin at 105 pounds at the Penn-Jersey Tournament where Girard took third place. Reilly and Ragin, along with Kevin Chambers, will be returning mat men next season. Other promising wrestlers who will be back next year are Ali Atefi and Keith Keonig. We are confident that the wrestling team will be Number One next season! 50 Mr. Ronald Colson Jon Kaercher — z BASKETBALL OM yi Ss (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. McKay, Brian Gabauer, Jay Fitzgerald, Steve McLeod, Mike Leatherbury, Terrell Peterkin, Barry Gray, Craig Nelson, Kevin Jenkins, Tim Barefield, Tennie James, and Assistant Coach Joe Gibbons) The 1981-1982 basketball team had a rough year. Although there were some talented players, the team could not find a way to win. Poor attitudes and low grades did not help. Early in the season the team participated in two tournaments. Although favored to win the Kiwanis Tournament for the second consecutive year, Girard did not perform well, finishing in fourth place. The team experienced difficulties early in the season and never really rebounded. Hopefully, next year’s players will keep their grades up and their minds clear. If so, Girard will come out on top! Thanks to the coaching of Mr. William Gallagher, the 1982 varsity baseball team finished the season one game under .500 (12-13), clearly the best results in the past decade. This was the first time in the fourteen year history of the Penn-Jersey Conference that Girard fielded a playoff team. Girard came within two runs of attendi ng the Penn-Jersey Conference Championships at Glen Mills. In addition to this distinction, the team was invited to the first annual A.N-C. Tournament, where they finished second to Philmont Christian Academy. The players that are leaving the College this year would like to wish next year’s team the best of luck in competing for the Penn-Jersey Championships. They would also like to thank coach “Gal” for his leadership and guidance. Joseph Reilly Mr. William Gallagher loseph Reilly Ao | TRACK FIELD Vaughn Jackson, John Chambers, Ken Annand, Ali Atefi-Monfared, Kevin Chambers, Michael Leatherbury, Antonio James, Jeffrey Miles, : and Mr. Shaeffer.) This year’s track team was one of the best in many years. The overall record of the squad was ten wins five losses, with tow meets being lost by very narrow margins. In the Penn-Jersey League, the team’s record was 3-1, the one loss being by only half a point. Girard went into the Penn-Jersey Championships with eagerness, and by the time the final event was to be held, a victory looked promising for the team. Two false starts, however, resulted in Girard’s disqualification from this deciding event, enabling Glen Mills school to defeat Girard 66-63. The team members know in their hearts though, that they are the true champs. With the outstanding coaching of Mr. Bob Jackson and Mr. Arnold Schiffrin they will be able to prove it next year! MISSING - Joe Swords) Led by anew coach, Mr. Rick Saddler, and captain Tim Merkel, the tennis team had more individual victories (six) than in the last five years. The fact that there was only one team win may be attributable to the near-impossibility of fielding a full squad. With only twenty-nine boys in the junior and senior classes, not all of whom chose to participate in sports, the number of potential players was indeed limiting. The tennis team was often outmanned by opposing teams andasa result, team morale suffered. We leave, however a select few underclassmen who are dedicated to the sport, and who, with proper instruction and motivation can help to once again make tennis a competitive sport at Girard College. | ad Mr. Rick Saddler Dave Matsinger Tyre n BAb eDesZeDon = t (SITTING: Tim Merkel, Tom DiRenzo, and Jon Kaercher (Co-Editors), Joe Schmeltzer (Associate Editor), and Joe Reilly.
