The class also wishes to express its appreciation to Mrs. Elizabeth Goodenow and Mr. Mark Weinstein for their continued help and guidance which was of great value to our class. 4 f To the Class of 1978; This CORINTHIAN is your book - your record of activities, your accomplishments, your services to the College, and your judgment of each other. You will turn to this book in years to come with a flood of nostalgic memories. You will yearn to see each other once again and also those who have had a part in your lives here. You are on the threshold of graduation from a great school and entrance into the alumni of that school. A warm welcome awaits you. You are about to share a fellowship which is difficult for anyone to define to you. You will become mor e aware and more appreciative of those who have walked the Main Road before you. These are men who, because of the inspirations and opportunities they found at Girard, went on to greatness in service to this country and mankind, men who have lived, and sometimes died, for their ideals. The reminders have been all about you -- in the buildings, on the monuments and plaques, along the halls and paths you have walked. And now, you must become a vital part of this tradition. The Class of 1978 has endeavored in so many ways to make Girard College a finer School. You leave behind a good scholarship record; achievement in music, art and athletics; a standard of excellence in service to the College; an example of able leadership; and a reputation for integrity. As long as a spirit like that fostered by your class permeates this school, it will continue to progress. Girard College will soon be a fond memory. May you always feel that the Temple on the Hill gave you faith in yourselves and a vision of the service you can render to society. Make your influence felt -- contribute as much as you can! May life be good to you! Yours very sincerely, John A. Lander President i 5 Front Row: Dr. J. Magill, Dr. I . Malisoff, Dr. J. Lander (President), Miss E. Feld, Mr. R. IVafson Back Row: Mr. R. Euerybody needs a friend to brighten up their world. Cat Stevens LETTER FROM S.B.P. Fellow Girard Brothers: As 1 look over the accomplishments and failures of my tenure as Student Body President this year, I would like to think that the Council had a prosperous year under my leadership. Regardless of how well I fulfilled my office, we must admit that this 77 - 78 school year was the most successful in the recent history of Girard College. Twelve years ago, when I entered Girard, there were eight hundred students. Now we have only three hundred. Numerous other things have changed since 1 entered Girard. Now, as I prepare to leave Girard, I must state my opinion of why I believe things have changed. To begin with, we have aquired a competent administration. But what has really made the difference was that we, the students, realized that it was time to put Girard back on the right track. As soon as this was decided, it did not take long before we were well on our way to reaching everyone’s goal of a great Girard. In conclusion, 1 would like to say to the underclassmen: you have been left the toughest job of all, that is, to keep Girard moving in a positive direction. Remember, gentlemen, at all times the simplest things are often the hardest to do. Sincerely yours, William Tillinghast 77 - 78 S.B.P. 31 32 33 Shut up Keith! I’m serious. Let’s order out. What’s your act? Don’t even try it. Yea, right bud. Who’s on tonight? Here, here, no comment. Leg or breast?.of the chicken! You do the homework? Vectors, vectors, vectors! Retry!!! I’m not saying that you’re dumb, but. I’m not instigating, but. What test??? Is Wang on? Is it time to eat? Gotta smoke? Going out tonight? I got winners. Got any food? X days till graduation. Another snow storm! Another rule! It’s Tuesday. Who’s room tonight? Turn the radio on Al. Where do we go today? What’s for homework? What’s the name of this class? Violation form. Where is your tie? We can talk them out of it. It’s Hook’s fault! Did you see the Gong Show? Pinball time. Remember Merchant? Let’s do it for Jean Jean. 36 37 “Perfect” is the word that best describes the 1978 Senior Prom. Everything worked out just the way it was planned. The music, decorations, and food couldn’t have been better. The group, named “Gratitude” did a great job of supplying the entertainment for the evening which everyone enjoyed. During the band’s break, Lyle Litzenberger performed three songs, one of which he wrote and dedicated to his classmates. This song entitled “Good-bye Friends, Good-bye,” truly expressed the close relationship of the class and their experiences together throughout their years of brotherhood. The Class of 1978 wishes to express its appreciation to its guests and contributors for their support in the success of this unforgetable occasion. 38 Standing: D. Ritter, B. Oliver, G. ReiHy. P. Under the direction of Ms. Wallen we have discovered the importance of world affairs and have profited from it. At meeting members take part in discussions pertaining to current events. The club also participates in Philadelphia-wide World Affairs Council activities. This year this included trips to New York and Washington, as well as briefings from the Jordanian Ambassador, British Ambassador and Senator Heinz. The Model United Nations was the highlight of the year. Selected members extensively researched the countries assigned to them and for their roles as delegates from Jamaca and Sweden. We would like to thank Mr. Wooten for his help in making this year’s club a success. The students hope that the World Affairs Club will remain active in the years to come. 42 Kneeling: J. Annand, T. This year the band, under the direction of Mr. Martin Knoblauch, Head of the Music Department, has played at two very successful concerts, for which they received many compliments on their performance. During the past few years, the membership of the band has decreased rapidly. Thanks to Mr. Knoblauch this is no longer the situation. Membership has increased without harming the quality of the band’s sound. With the continued effort of Mr. Knoblauch as well as that of the students, the band will once again be an important part of Girard life. I I 1 43 Standing: M. Anthony, J. Caesar, S. Zandes, C. Cuccuini The abundant amount of snow this year made it possible for the Ski Club to have a most enjoyable and exciting season. Under the supervision of Mr. James Sypherd, the Ski Club went on four trips. Three of these outings were to Spring Mountain in Spring Mount, Pa. The members of the Ski Club would like to thank the school for letting them have two of these trips during the week, when the skiing was much better. The highlight for eleven members of the club was a trip to Bromley Mountain in Manchester, Vermont. It was a weekend that not one of the members will forget. The weather was right and the skiing was great! The members of the team would like to thank Mr. Sypherd for not only taking us on the trip, but also for letting us use the facilities of his cabin, which decreased the cost of the trip a great deal. 44 Sitting: B. Pfromm, Mr. J. Shuster, L. Litzenberger, Standing: R. Schmeltzer, R. Smuzinsky, The Girard Chapter of the National Honor Society set high goals for itself this year. For the first time in recent years the members of the society elected to do a project. The main objective of our project was to help our school the best way we could. We decided that the most valuable thing we could do was to establish a Student Tutorial Program. Under the excellent advisorship of Mr. Shuster and Mrs. Goodenow our program was a success. We hope that the National Honor Society members of next year will continue the efforts to improve Girard in every way possible. 46 T, Merkel, J. D’Amico, J. Rei7 y, A. Williams, R. Trotter, R. Buck The major task facing the student council was to gain the confidence, and cooperation of the student body. The council set out tp do this by attempting to provide a useful and effective organization that the student body would be proudly represented by. We feel that the council was completely successful in accomplishing this goal. One of the major accomplishments of this year’s council was the balancing of the extra curricular activities, with the forming of various clubs and activities. The council has laid the foundation of a well working student government. It is our sincere hope that future classes keep the council as influential as it has been this year. 47 Mr. A. Kemler, Mr. C. Campbell, Mr. G. O’Rourke, Mr. D. Burton. Missing: Mr. M. Weinstein Our last year in Bordeaux Hall was but a flash that will be remembered in all of our hearts. The ea y living and home - like atmosphere had a great deal to do with the quickness of the year. We will always remember the days we would walk through the halls on our way to play pool or ping - pong and see the lounge being occupied by an eager looking crew watching television. It was common for a housemaster to be challenged on either the pool or ping - pong table. When we were challenged with the problems in life it wasn’t unusual to have a housemaster help us to a solution. The most widely used and most memorable facility was Alexander Graham Bell s invention, the telephone. Memories of how we grew closer cannot be matched. We were like a family in a mansion. 48 Mrs. P. Abrams, Mrs. J. Faulk, Mrs. J. Kipping. On May 11, 1933 the new Library building was dedicated. At that time it was stated that the library’s use was two-fold, “a school library laboratory” and a place for recreational reading. Over the years the books have been moved about and the contents of the rooms rearranged in an effort to keep abreast of the modern educational trends. It is still the main objective of the library staff to provide materials to support and supplement the school curriculum, as well as to provide recreational reading for the students and adults of Girard College. It is hoped that the books found within this “perfect gem of a building” may in some way encourage the Girard student to continue his journey. 49 Dr. Lander. Mr. Watson_ Mr. Konopka .,. The 1977 Cross Country Team, led by co-captains Sam Gathers and Bret Pfromm, enjoyed a successful season both from a standpoint of win-loss record and from personal achievement. Practice sessions were held twice daily both in the early morning and the afternoon, and this extra work paid off. At the annual George School Invitational, the team finished well and defeated an arch rival, George School, for the first time in many years. At the Penn-Jersey’s, held at the Academy of The New Church, Sam Gathers finished a highly respectable 9th, followed by Bret Pfromm (13th), Bernie Oliver (15th), Keith Small (23rd), and Tony Williams (26th).The team finnished 4th, one point shy of 3rd place. Tony Williams established himself as a premier runner, even though he is only in 7th grade and this was his first year of competition. Jonathan Reed, Stanley Stanislawczyk, Shawn Swords, and Andrew Sanford rounded out the well balanced team with manager Paul Rivera giving coach Geoffrey Schulz a helping hand in his first year of coaching. Two individuals worthy of note are James Czbas who participated and was a staunch supporter in many of the morning practices, and Curt Goldberg who was unable to complete the season due to injury. Guccuini With a strong, proud, and disciplined team, soccer was Girard’s most popular sport this year. With a new coach, Mr. Jay Hoffman, the team attempted to defend its Penn Jersey Title. The team came very close to winning the title for the second consecutive year but lost it by a close margin. The team was awarded third place in the Penn-Jersey League. The team, led by Co-captains Paul Rogers and Joe D’Amico, was comprised of seven senior players, and eleven juniors, each of whom maintained a positive attitude throughout the hard season. With the support of the student body at a good number of the games, the team managed to pull through on quite a few close matches. This team spirit as well as the enthusiasm of the fans made this a proud, winning team. Even though the team unseuccessfully defended it’s title this year, Girard should be very proud of this group of young athletes who expect to regain the title next year! I I i 1 53 i r 1 Sfandmg; S. Riley, M. Cianfrani, N. IVilliams, R. Riley This year’s wrestling team was very successful. With determination, hard work, and a good background in wrestling the team posted win after win. The team placed 2nd in the Penn-Jersey takedown tournament, 2nd in the Girard Tournament, and 4th in the Penn-Jersey League championships. Credit must be given to Mr. Brian Seeber for working with the team throughout the season. He acted as coach of the team despite his other duties as athletic director. The season looks very promising for next year as the team has eight returning lettermen, three of whom took first place at the Girard Tournament. Good Luck Team! The 1978 Basketball Squad was not at a loss for unity, discipline and character. Led by co-captains Andre Smith and Ned Jenkins, the team had Girard’s first winning record in the past ten years of eleven wins and six losses. While opposing teams were much taller than Girard’s basketball squad, it didn’t hinder the team this year. Such schools as Soleburv. Episcopal and Friends Central were all defeated by the strong Girard team. The squad was coached by Mr. McKay, and his assistant Mr. Leib. The two coaches carefully analyzed opposing team defenses which made the job a lot easier for the team. Ned Jenkins set a team mark by getting Girard College’s first slam dunk. Girard won the majority of their close crucial games, including the overtime victory over George School. The future looks extremely promising for Girard’s up coming teams. Farewell “Killer Squad” and good luck. I 55 — Sfanding; Mr. R. Quinn, T. Sims, L. Litzenberger, M. Oestreich, B. Pfromm, C. Prior, W. Tillinghast, R. Schmeltzer, C. Bassey, P. Rivera, Kneeling: A. Sanford, J. Dudley, A. Coleman, J. Czbas, J. Schmeltzer, K. Annand, J. Annand, S. Swords. This year’s swim team was larger than those of the past few years. Although they didn’t have a winning record, they certainly had a winning attitude in all aspects. Most of the team was composed of young swimmers who did very well. If this young talent remains with the team, there is no doubt that the team will improve greatly and have a winning season next year. Good luck next season! 56 First Row: J. Bishop, K. Small, N. The Girard Varsity Track team for the 1978 season consisted of six seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores, all of whom put forth their best efforts. Under the direction of Mr. Schulz, the team worked very hard at practices as well as at the meets. The schedule, consisting of fourteen meets with only two at home, left the team at a disadvantage since they did not have the support of the student body. Despite this the team did very well. 57 f Top row: C. Bassej , K. Purdie, D. Kaercher, J. Czbas, Second row: Mr. R. Quinn (Coach), J. Roman, R. Riley, J. Retry, Front row: R. Anderson, S. Jenkins. The 1978 Girard Tennis Team was at full strength this year. The team had two seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore. Of that group there were four returning players from last year. Under the direction of Mr. Ronald Quinn, the team strove for excellence. Significant improvement was noticed in the team as the year progressed, with much effort being put forth by the players, as well as the coach. Student interest in tennis has increased greatly this year, and next year looks promising for the Girard College Tennis Team! 58 First Row: R. Schmeltzer, J. Cianfrani, M. Cianfrani, G. Reilly, W. With a determined and well experienced team, the Girard 1978 Baseball season was a very accomplished one. The concern, effort, and spirit of this team was easily recognized in their playing. Girard can be very proud of any team that puts forth everything they’ve got, and that was exactly the attitude of this team. Mr. Brian Seeber, the team’s coach, worked many hard hours to develop the team’s talent to it’s fullest. And with the help of eight willing seniors, this goal was easily fulfilled. Tom Bathurst, John Buck, Pat Giordano, Mark Oestreich, Ray Schmeltzer, Andre Smith, Bill Tillinghast, and Nathan Youngs were the senior members of the team who deserve a great deal of recognition for their hard work, and most of all for their spirit and leadership. These eight members would like to express their gratitude to their coach, and to their supporters from the student body and faculty. 59 SOCCER Giordano, P. 76 Oestreich, M. 76, 77 Ruth, B. 76, 77 Riley, C. 76, 77 Smith, A. 76, 77 CROSS COUNTRY Oliver, B. 76, 77 Pfromm, B. 76 Reed, J. 76 Small, K. 74, 76, 77 WRESTLING Bishop, J. 78 Goldberg, C. 76, 77, 78 Oliver, B. 77 Pfromm, B. 76, Reed, J. 77 Riley, C. 76, 77, 78 Ruth, B. 77, 78 BASKETBALL Jenkins, N. 77, 78 Petry, J. 75 Roman, J. 75, 76, 77, Schmeltzer, R. 78 Scott, J. 78 Smith, A. 77, 78 SWIMMING Oestreich, M. 74, 75, 76, 77, 78 Tillinghast, W. 77 BASEBALL Bathurst, T. 77, 78 Buck, J. 78 Giordano, P. 77, 78 Oestreich, M. 76, 77, 78 Schmeltzer, R. 78 Smith, A. 77, 78 Tillinghast, W. 77, 78 Youngs, N. 77, 78 TENNIS Petry, J. 77, 78 Roman, J. 74, 75, 76, 77, 78 TRACK Bradley, P. 76, 77, 78 Jenkins, N. 78 Oliver, B. 76, 77, 78 Reed, J. 76, 77, 78 Riley, C. 76, 77 Small, K. 76, 77, 78 60 61 —- I - ■ J J- ' ' ■ autographs
