Dear Class of 1966: You are leaving Girard, a giant step in your lives. We are sorry to see you go, for we have been a part of your growing. We are, however, glad that you have completed your work here. The purpose of an education is to make an art of life, to overcome selfishness and self centeredness, and to avoid the homogenized mediocrity which tells you to play it smart.” We hope that we have given you the beginnings of this education. You must, if your lives are to be full and significant, pursue it tenaciously; you must use it courageously. You will hear again and again those who cry out for, Freedom,” but if you listen carefully, you will seldom hear a demand for responsibility. We pray that we have taught you that one does not exist without the other. Freedom is nourished by responsibility and dies without it.
