In 1820 at Ru1lle France, the Reverend James Francls DuJar1e, encouraged by the lack of relxglous 1nstruct1on 1n the aftermath of the French Revolut1on, founded a commumty of teachers wh1ch he orlgmally called the Brothers of Samt Joseph The commumty prospered but Father DuJar1e s health prevented h1m from contmuxng the adm1n1strat1on of h1s charges In 1837, Father DuJar1e ret1red as superlor and assoc1ated h1s commumty w1th the Aux1l1ary Pr1ests of LeMans, founded and governed by the Reverend Bas11 Anthony Moreau Th1s assoc1at1on became known as the Congregatxon of Holy Cross, named after the d1str1ct of Holy Cross 1n the d1ocese of LeMans where the Assoclatlon had 1ts beg1nmng Father Moreau, des1r1ng to gam the recogn1t1on of the Holy See for h1s new rel1g1ous organ1zat1on, pet1t1oned for the approval of the Const1tu txons, wh1ch conta1ned the adm1n1strat1on and rules of sp1r1tua11ty of h1s communlty Years passed as the Holy See thoroughly exam1ned them and made recommendatlons for changes Flnally on May 13th, 1857 the Const1 tut1ons were def1n1te1y approved The Congregat1on rejolced m th1s appro batlon as It assured them that thelr rule of l1fe was a defxmte and stralght road to hohness, and that those who would follow It w1th f1de11ty would un doubtedly arr1ve at sanctxty Th1s year, the Brother of the Congregauon of Holy Cross are com memoratmg thzs all 1mportant annlversary We THE PREP staff of 1957 w1sh1ng to Jom m th1s commemoratxon, dedlcated th1s book to the memory of the Reverend Basll Anthony Moreau a.nd the Reverend Franc1s Du3ar1e, the fommders and ploneers of the commumty by wh1ch G1lmour 1S adm1n1s tered 5 9 . . . . , ' 9 . . . . l , - . - .
