After teaching in Iowa schools for 31 years, Mr. Bert Kruse will be retiring from his teaching duties. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his loyal services. Mr. Kruse graduated from Grundy Center High School. He did his undergraduate work at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. His major instrument was the clarinet and he minored in piano. After graduation from Simpson, he went into the service and was a member of the 10th Army Air Force Band serving in India and China. Prior to his first teaching position, he spent the summer attending Iowa State Teacher's College Know UND where he studied oboe, bassoon, snare drum, band management, band materials and conducting. He felt the need for a refresher during the summer after three years of service. It was during his tenure at Everly, his second teaching po- sition, that he learned to fly an airplane. He obtained his pi- lot's license in one month and two days at Spencer. He began his graduate work at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, during the summers of 1948-49. While at Northwestern he studied clarinet with Mr. DeCaprio who was the principal clarinetist with the Chicago Symphony. He received his M.M.E. from Drake University, Des Moines. He interrupted his teaching career on two different occa- sions. Once he took a position calling on schools selling textbooks, and prior to coming to GC-B he sold audio-visual equipment and supplies. Mr. Kruse has been with the GC-B school system for the past 14 years. He has served as the instrumental director for the elementary and high school. Mr. Kruse is taking early retirement because he has responsibilities in Grundy Center where his house is located. His future is not planned, but he has assured us that he does not plan to spend the rest of his life in a rocking chair. With his many and varied interests, we will certainly agree. In addition, Mr. Kruse has played an active role in the taking and developing of photographs for the annual. A special thanks to Mr. Kruse from the 1983 Executive Board for his dedication and cooperation. His services will be greatly missed!
