r r gk The school burldrng xx as larger than mo t courrtrx one room hools of later dax for the farnrlre of the pioneers xxere numerous The teacher had to act as Janitor and the heating of the burldrng on the cold spring morning xxas a consrderable task as xxas also the cleaning after the muddx feet of the chrldren Lnfortunatelx no help could be secured from the older boxs because thex xxere all at xxork as earlx as pos rble rn the spring The vrexx from the school house xxas xerx different from that xxhrch rs noxx seen A fexx houses could be seen to the north and xxest but from the xx rndoxxs one could ee onlx the great fields of corn xx hrch surrounded the chool One great delight xx as the xxrld str axx berrx xx hrch grexx rn abundance along the roads nd the railroad and the teacher remembers xxrth pleasure grfts of srx quart pans full of the delrcrous fruit at xarrous times durrng the summer Another source of delrght to the children xxas a sr-ragglx xxrlloxx tree near the school rn xxhrch thex clrnrbed and prayed One little grrl, long srnce become a grandmother, became caught rn the top branches of this tree and had to be rescued bx ladders brought from toxxn Among the other children xx ho composed the mcrrx chool group xxere Mrs Louise Ramsex Seager and Hugh, and John Darrah xxho strll resrde rn Gilman The school burldrng xxas croxxded wrth children from the opening day Children xx ere eager to go to school perhaps because there was little else that could be done for amusement When the Countx Superrntendent made hrs first vrsrt he ordered several of the voungest chrldren to be sent home because of the overcroxxded condrtron The equipment of the burldrng xx as verx meager A small blackboard hung from the xx all the teacher had no desk but used a crude pine table Instead of modern drrnkrng fountains a common trn drpper from xxhrch all drank xxas passed about at rntervals Water xx as carrred from the toxxn xx ell at the corner bx the Gregg hardxx are store and the pupils Wrth this large room full of children of various ages and stages of advancement rt rs easx to rmagrne that the teacher s daxs xxere xery busy ones The day opened xxrth Brblc reading and singing Then came three readrng classes xxrth McGuffeys Readers as texts Irour arrthmetrc classes folloxx ed using Ray s text as a guide After that several classes rn geographx txxo classes rn gramrrrar usrng Prnneos terct txxo classes rn spelling using Sanderfs spellrnp book and darlx practice rn penmanshrp for all except the xounge t helped to fill up the day Frrdax afternoon xxas a gala oc casron and the parents and friends turned out sometimes to enjox the event and get acquainted Recrtatron rn concert of such favorites as Barbara Frr chre and Lrncoln s Gettysburg address and the group srngrng xxere the favorite features of such programs For conducting this manx srded educational rnstrtutron, rncludrng services as Janrtress the teacher recerved a salary of forty dollars a month In spite of this huge rncorne she abandoned the school at the end of the term to take charge of a home of her oxxn rn Qutherland s grove rbout a half mile south of the school The school contrnued rn rts first burldrng for about three x ars longer By that trme the attendance requrred the construction of a nexx burldrng xxhrch xxas located rn the grove one block east xx hrch xxas the pride of the small toxxn The nexx burldrnr, xxas a large one for rt trnres and met the needs of the conrrnunrtx for nranx xears untrl rt xx as desiroxed bx fire rn On the srte of the old burldrng xx as then erected the present fine building xxhrch rs alreadx becoming inadequate for the great con solrdated chool for xxhrch a nexx burldrng rs noxx bernp burlt This dexelopment throughout the fiftx xears of the splendid chool rn Grlman can be of greater satrsfactron and delight to no one than to the first teacher xx ho has kept rn close touch xxrth rt all these xears xxhose son rs noxx a member of the school board rnd xx hose grandchildren are noxx mronr rts pupils Ara Roger Sutherland Page eight ,ga T11 J o1V1,w1.u2 1 V ?1EfV W 1 ' 'fn if -i- Y V ff ---- i,V - fV,VVf,,Y Y ,,i,,,,, , , ,,,,, ,M ZW, W..
