THE UIVL-1.021 THE OLD SCHOOL BUILDING Elected ln 1909 BOARD OF EDUCATION R J PAUL Preszdent R H SUTHERLAND C S DUNKLE L B GREGG H G BENNETT J A SMALL beczetavy I L WYLIE Treasure, 07111116111 5 Jllusi Srchnnl The month of Aprll ln 1810 saw the openlng of the first school wlthrn the l1m1ts of the town of Gllman PTSVIOUS to that trme a country school had been held 1n a bulldlng standlng on the srte of the former Lee Beale resldence Just northwest of the town s1te When the town of Gllman had been started 1n the Sprmg of 1870 thls country school bulldlng was moved bx teams of oxen to a new locatlon XXltl'llI'I the town l1mltQ where now stands the Cannmg Factory boardlng house It then became necessary to secure a teacher and thls dutv fell upon Hlbbard Sutherland the school drrector He enqulred of Professor S J Buck of Grmnell College who was actlng as Pastor of the Gllman Congregatlonal church Professor Buck had seen MISS Ara J Rogers of Toledo whrle she had been vlsltlng frlends at Grmnell College and recommended her for the posltlon MISS Rogers was then teachmg 1n Marshalltown but Mr Sr therland was able to lnduce her to come to the Gllman school The town of Grlman as Mass Rogers first saw It when she came to take charge of the school consrsted of a new statlon burldlng and about slxteen houses and store burldlngs The only old burldmg w as the farm house XIl l1Cl1 stood on the knoll Just south of the Congregatlonal church In thrs house the teacher secured room and board and on the nerct mormng made the lirst of her Journexs across town to the school Thls was a real adventure during most of that muddy Sprmg of 1870 for there were no cement or even board walks In the muodre t stretches straw had been spread and a few boards lard across other mud holes Page seven u . . , - . .
