We wish to dedicate the 1973 Gillespian to Mr. John B. Orler, superintendent and Mr. Walter J. Chulick, assistant superintendent and curriculum coordinator of Community School District 7. For their years of dedicated service and all of their accomplishments for our school and community, we offer them our sincere gratitude and respect. Mr. John B. Orler, superintendent of schools, will retire this year after thirty-five years of service in this district. Mr. Orler was born in Kreb, Oklahoma on April 7,1915. He attended Eagerville Elementary School and Benld High School, graduating in 1933. After graduation he attended Blackburn College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Sherliff College majoring in math. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. He also served from 1943-1946 in the army. Mr. Orler’s first position in the district was as a teacher in Eagerville for six years. For the next five years he was a teacher and then principal at the Wilsonville Grade School. He then taught math for five years at the Gillespie High School. He was principal for the next twelve years at the Gillespie Grade school. His last seven years of service has been in his present position as superintendent. Mr. Walter J. Chulick, after forty-one years of service to schools in this area, is retiring. Mr. Chulick was born on April 5, 1912. He attended Benld public schools, also attending Russian Orthodox Church Schools in the evenings and summers until the ninth grade. After high school graduation, Mr. Chulick attended Blackburn College for two years. He began teaching in the Benld School system in 1932, teaching third and fourth grades for seven years. Through night school and summer courses, Mr. Chulick received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Illinois in 1939- He was then appointed superintendent of Benld Grade School. He served in the army for three years during World War II, after which he returned to the University of Illinois to receive his Master’s Degree in educational administration. He was appointed Superintendent of what was once Community Consoli- dated District 10 in Benld. Later, when Benld and Gillespie consolidated, he became prin- cipal of the Benld Attendance Center. In July, 1970 he was appointed to his present position. To these two en, we say thank-you and dedicate this book of memories.
