Gillespian Gillespie Community High School Gillespie, 111. 1973 Vol. 18 TABLE OF CONTENTS 2 ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS FACULTY 64 70 82 96 ADVERTISERS 117 We wish to dedicate the 1973 Gillespian to Mr. John B. Orler, superintendent and Mr. Walter J. Chulick, assistant superintendent and curriculum coordinator of Community School District 7. For their years of dedicated service and all of their accomplishments for our school and community, we offer them our sincere gratitude and respect. Mr. John B. Orler, superintendent of schools, will retire this year after thirty-five years of service in this district. Mr. Orler was born in Kreb, Oklahoma on April 7,1915. He attended Eagerville Elementary School and Benld High School, graduating in 1933. After graduation he attended Blackburn College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Sherliff College majoring in math. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. He also served from 1943-1946 in the army. Mr. Orler’s first position in the district was as a teacher in Eagerville for six years. For the next five years he was a teacher and then principal at the Wilsonville Grade School. He then taught math for five years at the Gillespie High School. He was principal for the next twelve years at the Gillespie Grade school. His last seven years of service has been in his present position as superintendent. Mr. Walter J. Chulick, after forty-one years of service to schools in this area, is retiring. Mr. Chulick was born on April 5, 1912. He attended Benld public schools, also attending Russian Orthodox Church Schools in the evenings and summers until the ninth grade. After high school graduation, Mr. Chulick attended Blackburn College for two years. He began teaching in the Benld School system in 1932, teaching third and fourth grades for seven years. Through night school and summer courses, Mr. Chulick received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Illinois in 1939- He was then appointed superintendent of Benld Grade School. He served in the army for three years during World War II, after which he returned to the University of Illinois to receive his Master’s Degree in educational administration. He was appointed Superintendent of what was once Community Consoli- dated District 10 in Benld. Later, when Benld and Gillespie consolidated, he became prin- cipal of the Benld Attendance Center. In July, 1970 he was appointed to his present position. To these two en, we say thank-you and dedicate this book of memories. 4 5 Mr. Baggiore is retiring this year after many years of dedicated service as a teacher of Spanish, English and Speech. Walt Whitman SENIORS Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains. David Thoreau Not the End, But the Beginning To become a SENIOR is the dream of every young man or woman as he progresses through his high school years. Three years of anticipation, looking up to the ones before him, watching them set examples, and then the glorious day arrives. The members of the class of 1973 finally become seniors! The class of ’73 is one of consistency. This has been shown many times. For the third consecutive year, the class of ’73 was awarded third place for their Homecoming float, a mat- ter of great pride! The history of the senior class is one of self-discovery. Successes and failures taken in stride have prepared them for one goal — LIFE. The senior class will always be remembered for their leadership and service throughout four years of high school. The year’s prod- uction, ’’Deadly Ernest” was the highlight for the club members. The play, a comedy in three acts by Donald Pay- ton, was presented April 12 and 13 to a large audience. Not only acting, but set building, crew work and prompting are important parts of any production, as each member learned. Through the demanding training and ability of the cast, it was possible to produce a play enjoyed by young and old alike. 68 “Deadly Ernest” 69 ATHLETICS In this fresh evening each blade and leaf looks as if it had been dipped in an icy liquid greenness. Every year one senior receives $50 from the F.T.A. treasury toward a college education. The student receives this award by writing a paper concerning the teaching profession and a group of teachers select the winning paper. During the 1972-73 school year, several girls who were interested in teaching special educa- tion started working as teacher aids in the T.M.H. and E.M.H. special education rooms. This program has worked out very well and the F.T.A. members have devoted much time to it. Members also do some substitute teaching in the grade school if a teacher has to leave or cannot be present in the classroom. 88 Girls Athletic Assoc. Row 1, Left to Right: L. Boltcma, D. Hughes, J. National Honor Society Each year, members of the faculty select from the student body those who have outstanding qualities of scholar- ship, leadership, character and service. Not only superior grades, but participation in extra-curricular activities is important in the making of a well-rounded student. Only 5’ of the Junior Class and 10’ of the Senior Class are pres- ented with this great honor, proving that hard work and diligent study produce the leaders of tomorrow. The annual banquet for the honor students was held April 12 in the cafeteria. Speaking on behalf of Lewis and Clark Community College was Dr. Thomas Juravich, Vice-President of Instructional Services. As in previous years, orations were given on the virtues of an Honor Society Member. These honors are reserved for a very small portion of the school population — those deserving of them. Indeed, each student bestowed with this honor has shown worthi- ness in every way. 91 Foreign Language Club Stated, Left to Right: M. Wehling, S. Katich, T. Mussacto, G. Seiler, M. Sexton, D. Its purpose is to provide a congenial atmosphere for those students interested in foreign lan- guages. The club sponsors were Mrs. Daley and Mr. Baggiore. They provided a helping hand in enabling the club members to run concession stands and other activities in order to make money for the club treasury. At the end of the year, club members went on an expense-paid all-day trip to St. Louis, including a ballgame. The club’s officials for the past two years were Randy Corbin, president; Steve Katich, vice-president; and Phil Cavoretto and Randy Verticchio, treasurers. Stated, Lift to Right: B. Schwappach, C. Miner’s Light — A Blue Banner Paper For the second consecutive year, Mrs. Staggs has guided the Miner’s Light to make an interesting and informative newspaper for the students of G.C.H.S. This year, the Southern Illinois Student Press Asso- ciation bestowed honors upon the staff. Six mem- bers travelled to Washington University in St. Louis and came home with 5 honorable mention awards for their efforts in the writing contest. The Blue Banner Award, presented by S.I.S.P.A. annually, was awarded to the Light” staff for their creativity, organization and freshness of ideas. This coveted award is based on 100 points of which the Miner’s Light received 84. This year’s staff served as reporters, writers, typ- ists and artists since there were only 6 steady mem- bers, 5 of which were seniors. In spite of these hin- drances, the staff, with editors, Steven Katich and Tracey Mussatto, produced a fine newspaper worthy of the Blue Banner. 93 Science Club The Science Club, advised by Mr. Sederwall and Mr. Wilkening, performed many fascinating experiments. The most exciting was the launching of the model rockets which were built last year. The money made from the concession stands was used for a trip to St. Louis. In St. Louis they viewed the Planetarium, the Museum of Transportation and KSNA Radio. They hope for an even better year next year. 94 Student Council Seated, Left to Right: Theresa Bussano, Janice Brown, Mary Gucciardo, Donna Griffel, Kathy Zarr.
