Gill School REFLECTIONS °75 Volume V One of Mr. Gill’s dreams materialized this year with the completion of the Dr. Paul D. Camp Chapel. This year it has been used for the Middle and Upper School chapel programs and Lower and Upper School Christmas pageants. The SCA has already spon- sored numerous bake sales, homecoming activities, a carwash, and with the Senior class held a Christmas dance at which time the Juniors received their class rings. Up to this point the SCA has served as a dance club, but not anymore! The association feels that the SCA should serve other school—oriented programs. For example; an effort is being made to become a member of the Chesterfield SCA and Jim is presently talking to the school officials. In order to instill school pride, the SCA also has plans for a school improvement program. The SCA has done an excellent job in the past, and with the help of the student body our SCA can do an even better 7 job in the future! 1 75 Monogram Club Front row: Pete Showalter, Martha Isaacs, Gary Young (P), Kim Dawson, Billy Bates. With its large membership and excellent leadership, the Key Club promises to be- come one of the strongest and most active clubs in the school. Many people wonder what the Key Club is. It is a service organi- zation with goals to help the surrounding community. The sponsor, Mr. Ron Franklin, carried the club through it’s starting weeks. Now, on fairly solid ground, it has under- taken many projects successfully and the fu- ture looks bright for this club. The following day Gill suffered a 14-0 loss to Blue Ridge Academy, but that was no reflection of the Blue Devils’ abil- ity. Halftime activities included floats from all classes and clubs and the crowning of the new Homecoming Queen, Melanie Mooberry. We were privileged to have visiting with us last year’s Homecoming Queen, Laura Ohly, as well as other graduates. Saturday night, a dance sponsored by the S.C.A., with music provided by Mace, con- cluded the exciting activities of Homecoming. They be- gan the journey by traveling through a tunnel of mystic seaweed. Upon entering the city, they found themselves surrounded with silvery-gray walls and strange sea crea- tures. In the center of the city an old gray wishing well added to hopes and dreams of the future. A mirror ball sparkled around the room, as the upperclassmen danced to the music of Fingal’s Cave. Sophomores, new to this occasion, were chosen to serve refreshments. As the exciting evening drew close to an end Mary Good- win and Steve Damerel were named as Queen and King of the Prom. After the prom the couples left—some went to a party at Billy Way’s house, others headed to the Top of the Tower, and still others went their own ways. We may all gripe and grumble About our little school on the hill. Behind the teachers’ backs we mumble Smart remarks that are “better” still. Hesitatingly we walk “the Hall” And tardily drag into class, As “Aubrey No. 2” gets upset And “Little Laraine” refuses to give a pass. You see, my friend, we’re seniors, And though we claim unhappiness, We realize that we'll miss it When school returns next fall. Feelings of our true pride and SOITOW at leaving begin to show, And as Graduation Day approaches we'll say, “You know, I really hate to go!” ROBIN ANNE FLINN Robin—Basketball Manager 11; Pep Club 9; Yearbook 12; Gym assistant 11,12; Chorus 12; Spanish Club 9; Baseball Statistician 11; Perfect Attendence 10,11; Middle School Basketball Time Keeper 11. Our career in school is stumbling on to a grand finale .. graduation. As we think back, there are some wonderful moments to remember. When we went to first grade, we had no idea what school was like. Our first day went fairly well, until the little boy next to us did not make it to the bathroom in time. We had been initiated into the school system. We soon learned the tricks of the trade for surviving in elementary school. Dodge- ball superstars negotiated big playtime contracts. Chris Bates became the chief “Wheeler Dealer” in trading lunches. Who else could have traded carrots for a twin- kie? Yes indeed, even Turner Cole took a turn on the monkey bars. We had all be- come bonified brats! However, it was time to graduate to junior high school. This was very frightening, especially for Billy Bates, because every girl in the seventh grade was taller than he. In fact, Jan Nelson did not have to look up to a boy in her class until tenth grade. Phys. Ed. coaches were new to everyone. Coach Pegram scared Gary Young out of two year’s growth. He got them back when he first saw Elizabeth Prest. He wanted to be able to take the girls out in a hurry. After we all started to grow up, we went on to high school. Jim Moncure experi- enced the joy of Algebra. Steve Hughey had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Hasty’s History class, and Melanie Mooberry was glad to be in any of Jay Horner’s classes! We learned the art of sleeping in class, along with getting teachers to postpone tests, spending twenty minutes in the bathroom, and getting our parents to give us money for dates. The greatest feat of all is how Debbie Cross aid Gary Cadd could stay together the entire time during a school day. Now we are “Seniors” and experiencing a few new pleasures. Jeff Shields crosses swords with Mrs. Kessener while her dog wails on the sidelines. The seniors enjoy — one of their many priviledges by eating on the senior lounge in the rain and cold. Miss McGhee gloats over our college acceptances and we all wonder where the years have gone. As we finish high school, we all wonder what we will do in the future. But there is no doubt, we will have fun doing it!! 55 56 Another school year is over and we, the underclassmen, are one year older and wiser. For some of us it meant our almost last year, and for some of us it meant only the beginning. To- gether, we shared many adventures (sometimes with painful results), and much growing up. We learned what happens when we ... forget signed test papers (on purpose maybe?), “talk back” to our superiors, chew gum in class, talk out of turn, and “goof off’ in chapel. These things among many oth- ers, helped us learn responsibility and judgement, and gave us many pleasant memories to keep always. 57 Juniors Show Great School Spirit David Armistead Mike Atkins John Barret Dawn Beckwith Harris Bibbs Paul Binns Donnie Bishop Pat Bland Pat Burch Karen Butterworth John Calloway Donna Carrel 58 Underclass Alice Clay Terry Cook Kim Dawson Vicky Dervishian i Charles Dickinson Emily Dille Lindsey Drudge Melodie Duvall Wiley Easter Caroline Ehrgott Underclass 59 With The Largest Class At Gill Mike Ellis Anne Francisco David George Beth Goldman Penny Hancock Henry Harris Debby Haas David Hatch Danny Huband Jeff Johnson Underclass Julie Johnson Greg Long John Lowman Kim Lucas Vivian Maxey Philip McDaniel Kelly Nance Mark Osborne Tommy Piasecki Alex Porter Alan Prest Helen Proctor Underclass 61 Curtis Radt Leslie Remington Janet Rice Pete Showalter Jeff Simpson = 4 Holly Slater Annette Spragins Keith Tucker Jody Underwood Anita Vogelsang John Westcott Susan Wilmoth Nancy Wright Cheryl Young 62 Underclass Sophomores Enjoy Another Year At Gill Kurt Althouse Jerry Andrews John Armistead Barbara Bass Delaney Black Claudette Brown Paige Brown Brad Clouse Joanne Coleman Paula Cox Jeff Davis Bo Edwards Stephanie Elks Ree Ellis Underclass 63 Kim Fulwider Ran Gaines Carol Gaywood Gail Grubb Mary Jane Hallett Stephanie Hamlett Beth Harrison ome ey tet BS eee TL 2 ee Charles Hicks Kathy Keller Robert Lefkowitz Andy Mergler Scott November Cathy Pace Debbie Parks Darlene Patton David Pierce Richard Rezek Steve Rhodes Susannah Sawyer Billy Simmons Cabell Singleton Cheryl Smith Underclass 65 Susan Stewart Jenny Strawn Mary F. Running out of the wishbone, a new power offense in- serted this year, the backs gained 2,436 yards. The strength and determination they exhibited while carrying the ball was characteristic of the greatest ground game a Gill team has ever had. Because of The Line These are the guys who worked in the “trenches”. They didn’t get much glory, but the backs knew who they were. The line continually blew out holes for the backs, making a strong ground game possible. Much work on the new sled and chute made this year’s line possibly the best ever for a Gill team. At press time, they were riding a four game winning streak, 16 wins out of the past 21 games, with impressive wins over Colle- giate and Huguenot Academy. As usual, tough defense and hustle is exemplory of this year’s team, with a determi- nation and desire to continue Gill’s WINNING WAYS. February opened the same way with a loss to Kecoughtan, but then the team bounced back beating Bene- dictine which was previously undefeated in the Virginia Soc- cer League. Two games remain on the schedule. If all goes well, Gill’s soccer team will be in the post-season tournament in the Virginia Soccer League. We didn’t win many games, but we learned much through the value of experienc e. We lost very close games to George Wythe (1-0), and Huguenot HLS. (2-0). At year’s end, only two seniors were starting, with ju- niors and sophomores doing most of the playing.
