Radford College Assistant Principal A graduate of Concord College, Mr. Larry Conner began his career at Giles in 1965 as physical educa- tion instructor and basketball coach. Mr. Conner has served as Assistant Principal since September 1966. Mr. Conner has encouraged organization and pro- ficiency throughout Giles High. He has dealt with each problem impartially, gaining him both the respect and admiration of each student. Activ- ities began in the summer as the handbook was plan- ned and extended into the school year when commit- tees were organized. Throughout the year the club coordinated assemblies, seventh grade orientation, and the Saturday Session program. Jeanie Dunman- President Scholarship, service, leadership, and character are the four traits on which National Honor Society mem- bers are chosen. Each fall the annual tapping assembly is held for prospec- tive junior and senior members who are chosen by a faculty committee. Besides sponsoring a tutoring pro- gram, members sold stationery to raise money for a scholarship. Their spring activities were highlighted as they attended the district meeting and held a picnic at Mountain Lake. Surprise, surprise! The Key Club is a service organization which is affiliated with the Kiwanis Club of Pearisburg. As well as donating money to different school organi- zations and sending members to district and inter- national conventions, they sponsor the beauty pageant, slave day, and the Harvest Ball Dance in honor of their sweetheart. Each year they present three awards which include the Teacher Apprecia- tion Award, the Sandy Nininger Award, and the John Phillip Sousa Award. This year they donated four hundred dollars to the school for purchasing instructional material. This year the boys sponsored the March of Dimes at school, assisted the Jaycees in their annual Christmas Shopping tour for the underprivileged, announced basketball games, and sponsored boys at a summer camp. The purpose of the “Masque and Gavel” is to ex- pose the students to different types of drama and to give them a better understanding of the theater and its influence on their lives. They have undertaken many projects that carry out their motto, “Do your thing— teach.” Observing National Educa- tion Week, the F.T.A. sponsored an assembly featuring Mr. P. E. Ahalt, Superintendent of Giles County Public Schools, as their guest speaker. The club assists teachers with classes and clerical work and entertains them with a “tea.” To carry out their motto still further, the senior members are allowed to observe classes and occasionally substitute for the teachers. Each year the F.T.A. raises money for a scholar- ship to be presented to a graduating F.T.A. Se- nior. Publishing the paper involves a variety of tasks such as writing feature stories, covering news events, drawing cartoons, laying-out pages, thinking of headlines, and selling ads. Mrs. Olga Jamison— Sponsor Club You Say Spirit “Spartans keep fighting when the going’s tough” resounded throughout the stands as the pep club cheered the Spartans onward. For special games, the club assigned sections of the hall to each club to decorate with spirit signs. School spirit was at its peak when two pep buses were taken to basket- ball tournaments. Mrs. June Miller is the sponsor. Interested fans cheer as the Spartans battle the Greenwaves. Ohomundra, the D.E. student teacher, seems to be having a little trouble in his class. The Distributive Education Clubs of America provide stu- dents with experience in mar- keting, merchandising, and business management through classroom experience and part- time employment. Once again the French Club has sponsored the annual Mardi Gras. Though the dance is the highlight of the year, the club en- gages in other activities. On April 12, five French Club members attended the National French Con- test in Roanoke. Girls State which will be at Radford College this summer. In a similar manner Gordon Hylton and Ray Ratcliffe were chosen as delegates for Va. Boys State which will be at the College of William and Mary also this summer. The purpose is to provide training in citizenship for boys and girls of high school age. This is to allow them to live together as self-governing citizens and to have them realize their duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities as American Citizens. The Chorale traveled to W. Va. to present four concerts which were received with standing ovations. The GHS Sr. Band Parades... Presents... Concerts... Under the direction of John Rudacille the band has earned their fame by performing in parades and presenting concerts where they have displayed their excellent talents and marching abilities. The band will end its year by hitting the road June 4 for Myrtle Beach for the “Sun-Fun Festival.” And Much, Much More... in There’s No Biz Like Show Biz The Masque and Gavel had an active year by pre- senting two big productions. In the fall they pre- sented a fantasy, “The Ugly Duckling”; a drama, “An Overpraised Season”; and a comedy, “The Balcony Scene.” They finished the year by win- ning a Superior rating at the District One-Act Play Festival which was held at Giles March 4.
