Each student will always cherish his pleasant memories of Giles High. Athletic events, the prom gradua- tion, and other prominent occasions affected us, as did smaller, more personal happenings in our school. To preserve these memories, the 1968 SHIELD includes both outstanding events and typical everyday occurences of our school. The SHIELD also emphasizes a truth important to everyone. ‘‘For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Unless each student apportions his time wisely, he is unable to excel in both academic and extracurricular activities. Therefore, we learn to respect the value of time and to use it wisely.

With great pride and pleasure, we of the 1968 SHIELD staff dedicate this yearbook to one who has dedicated herself to the best interests of Giles High School, Having graduated from Radford College, she taught at Pearisburg High School where she earned a reputation as an outstanding math teacher. When Giles High School was established seven years ago, she was named Assistant Director of Guidance; and in 1966, she became Director of Guidance. In addition, this person has diligently served as sponsor of the senior class for a number of years. We are proud to have apersonofher rare qualities as a part of our school. Her patience, tact, sincerity, and friendliness endear her to those she helps. Finally her exceptional knowl- edge and judgement make her advice worthy of the most careful consideration. For her devotion to Giles High School, the 1968 SHIELD is dedicated to MRS. JEAN HYPES BANE.
