Who fought for peace and freedom To keep our country free - The man called Kennedy. The day was bright, the man was slight That did this awful deed; A shot rang out and one man fell, The man called Kennedy. People watched as the cars went on that fateful day, A man hidden from the light with no respect to pay, Did end the life of this great man Twas obvious to see, The man called Kennedy. His name shall live forever, His spirit shall prevail; No man shall live to be as great To darken in his trail; And freedom’s light shall prosper From here to eternity, for the man, The man called Kennedy. This was the man, this was the man Who was the greatest of them all He fought for peace and freedom To keep our country free - The man called Kennedy. David McGrath All Rights Reserved 10 Mr. Harry Foglesong, principal of Giles High, graduated from Ceres High School in Ceres, Virginia. He received his B.Ed. Degree from Emory and Henry College and his M.A. Degree from George Peabody Col- lege. Before coming to Giles, he taught at Rocky Gap High School and Williamsburg Junior High School. He was principal at Pearisburg High School before the consolida- tion. He resides in Pearisburg with his wife, Ruth. He has two daughters, Betty and Kit- ty. His hobby is hunting. Mr. Foglesong has been principal at Giles since the school ' s beginning. Under his outstanding leadership, Giles has made rapid progress and the students and faculty look forward to more years of even greater achievement. Administration MR. ROBERT DUNN MR. HARRY N. FOGLESONG Mr. Robert Dunn is assistant principal. He is a graduate of Concord and received his Masters Degree from West Virginia Uni- versity. He lives in Pearisburg with his wife, Betty. He has one son, Greg. Mr. Dunn, originally from Peterstown, West Virginia, first came to Pearisburg High School as a basketball coach and Eng- lish teacher. For the past three years he has been at Giles. He can be seen handing out excuses in the early morning. 12 MR. SAM ROBINSON Guidance Director Many vague ideas concerning the duties of a counselor exist. Some look upon the counselor as a giver of advice, a specialist for problem cases, and a person to revise schedules. Others sometimes see the coun- selor as a convenient aid to perform innum- erable duties that are not related to any counselor function. Actually the counselor is this and much more. His primary goal is to help each individual attain maximum personal development. He tries to develop in each student the self-insight needed for making decisions on goals and the educa- tional means for attaining these goals. He encourages the students to work up to their ability, to develop independent habits of study, and to become more skilled in crit- ical thinking. The guidance department enables each individual to understand his abilities, interests, and personality traits. MRS. JEAN BANE Assistant Guidance Director guidance ' Dept. 13 MR. D. L. ALLEN V. P. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, They ' ve wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since they linger there. And you - O you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and the glad return. Think of them faring on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here. The two and 2, and the Spring Concert on Conventions and Foreign f bands gave a concert on Sunday, the 20th of May, dent Forum in Roanoke. The purpose of the Key Club, sponsored by Mr. Bob Richards, is service. This club is one of the most active in Giles High. Its main money raising project is the sale of Halloween candy. This money is used to send delegates to the Key Club Convention and to finance various service projects. Allen Ingram, Barry Guthrie, Bill Hodge, and Kerry Gillispie attended the convention, which was held in Richmond. Per- haps the students are more aware of the Key Club Beauty Pageant than any other activity. This year Miss Libbie Ann Munsey was chosen from among forty-eight contestants as Miss Giles High. The money from the pageant was used to buy a reading machine for the developmental reading program. In October of 1962 the Top 20 was enlarged to forty-two members and renamed the Symphonic Chorale. Each member au- ditions to secure a place in Chorale. The group is purely volunteer and there is no credit given for it. In May 1963 the Chorale went on a tour into northern West Virginia. They stayed at Jackson Mill, just outside of Weston. They sang concerts at Glenville High School, Weston High School, Buckhan- non Upsher High School, Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, and for Sunday Service at Weston Methodist Church. This year ' s tour, from May 20 to 24, was into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The group stayed at Massanetta Springs, just outside of Harrisonburg and presented concerts at Har- risonburg High School, Madison High School, Page County High School in Shenandoah, and Elkton High School. The Chorale has presented concerts in nearly every commu- nity in Giles County and for nearly every club in the county. ■■■■■■I hhhhhhhhhbi SOPRANOS ALTOS Becky Corell Deanne Johnson Sue Bocock Becky Smith Gloria Dunford Linda Dunman Patty Talbert Carol Nuckols Kendra Crowford Mary Lynn Brock Ella Webb Lillian Reed Elizabeth Talbert Jackie Wickline Ruth Morris Clara Fisher Martie Johnston Freddie Rushbrooke Judy Hankins Nancy Webb Betsy Stafford Linda Absher Mary Beth Edwards Kitty Dillon (Not pict.) Head coach for Giles was Mr. Bill Peery assisted by Mr. Jim Worley, line coach, and Mr. Bob Farmer, backfield coach. Mr. Peery came to Giles from Beaver High School and Mr. Farmer from Iaeger. In their first time out, the Spartans stunned Narrows with a 7-7 tie, which stopped the Greenwave one game short of the state record for consecutive wins. In their fourth game, the team pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year when they stopped undefeated Christiansburg 21-19. Picked by the district coaches to finish last out of 11 teams, Giles finished 5th. With only one returning letterman, Bob Morton, the Spartans tried a new style, run and shoot. Their strong points were their hustling defense and ability to steal the ball. The team had well-balanced scoring and kept four boys, Bob Morton, Roger Wood, Donnie Martin, and Skipper Williams, among the leading district scor- ers most of the season. 128 Gary Martin Barry Martin Bobby Morton Jim Witten 129 ROW 1: Larry Higgenbotham, J. It originated in December of 1962 as a trio composed of Jim Witten, a gui- tarist, Bill Shomo on the bass and Byrum Lee, playing a ukelele. This group sang for many assemblies and the Lion ' s Club Minstrel in 1963. During the summer they entertained at picnics and luncheons. In December, another guitarist, Dave McGrath, joined the group. Bill Shomo switched to playing the banjo and Byrum Lee changed to a ten string instrument called the tiple. Since the additipn of David McGrath, the group has sung at another Lion ' s Minstrel, hootenannies, dinners, as- semblies, and for the prom at Graham High School in Blue- field. They represented Giles High School on Saturday Ses- sion. On May 3, the Helmsmen made their first record. They recorded Froggie Went a Courtin ' and Chilly Winds. 147 Key Club Presents Pageant Queen Libbie Ann Munsey tells why she thinks a person born in America can make of himself whatever he wishes.
