CLASS HISTORY Well, Gil, here we are at another commencement exercise. What a four-year stretch this has been with that group! Sure, Bert, but it was quite an adventure with those teenagers. The class is marching down the aisle now, and seating themselves on the bleachers. How fine and mature they look in those caps and gowns. They are a far cary from the fresh- men who first entered the Golden Halls four years ago. You can say that again, Bert. It certainly brings back a lot of memories, doesn't it? When I see graduation exercises, I always reminisce. I'll never forget the first day these people meandered into the Golden Halls for the first time-very brave and sophisticated looking-until they met face to face with an up- perclassman-then they were aware of their low social status. When they tried and failed to locate home rooms, they weren't the only lost souls. The school had just been renovated, and all four classes were in a quandry as to where to go next. During that momentus year, our little freshmen were introduced to Gilbert's customs and fancies, and many frosh joined clubs, attended concerts, dances, and other things. '52 was the year the band was organized, and Donnie Sorel was elected to the Student Council. How about those demon- strative talks in Mrs. Deming's room. The Dramatic Club presented for its Christmas pag- eant, 'Why the Chimes Rang,' in which five bright freshmen appeared. The talents of the class of '56 were realized when the results of the freshmen questionnaire were tabulated. With their singing, the members of the all-male Lafayette College choir thrilled a great number of girls in April of '53, In the fall, a group of wise sophomores once again strolled through the Golden Halls, this year with a little more certainty. Tom Amenta and Bill Barrett were two of Gi1bert's representatives to All State. Sally Crossman made the cheerleading squad that year. The faculty surprised the student body by producing 'the smash hit, 'Wild and Wholly West.' The Student Council conducted the Polio Drive at Gilbert, the Key Club sponsored the Heart Fund drive, Gilbert's basketball team became runners-up in the Class B Tournament
