As They rode among The ruins OT The old Town, They suddenly saw an old prospecTor, Trom whom They inquired The sTory oT The Town. As he saT under The shade oT a Tall Tree, he lighTed his pipe and relaTed The Tollowing sTory: The end was near on ThaT evenTTul day here in EI Carim: The Town was headin' Tor ruin. IT all sTarTed when SheriTT Bronson was shoT and SweeT DeeT and his VigilanTes were Trying To Take over. Dink's place was in a Turmoil. Colligan and Lobby were serving Tree drinks aT The poinT oT a ggn. SilenT Sam was raising a rumpus: buT Tor once Gos- sip GerTie and Gabby were speechless. Amid all This conTusion, however, we suddenly saw coming ouT oT The deserT Creepin' Cris, Eager lrv, and The sTagecoach. As They came To a dusTy halT aT Gab- by's Boarding l-louse, ouT iumped Their mysTerious passenger, Barroom BeauTy. As she enTered The house, she saw Gabby and GerTie, siTTing in The corner oT The parlor, kniTTing and discussing The day's evenTs. Gabby had iusT Told GerTie ThaT Jasper had been shoT in The Bak- ken Opera l-louse aTTer The perTormance oT 'Much Ado abouT NoThing', in which she was sTarring wiTh The Shakespearean lover, Hap l-lazard.. Meanwhile, Wild Willy Bakken was back in Town To wiTness The calamiTy. While hanging ouT The wash, moreover, GerTie said she had learned Trom Lassoing LaTchaT, her neighbor, ThaT Slick Nick and Elossie were due Tor deaTh aT The hands oT opera-loving, Killer Scan- lon. l-le, wiTh his band oT cuT-ThroaTs, was planning To Take over The Town. Two-Gun Bell and Daring Dick, his Two sidekicks, were shooTing up The main way when suddenly and To Their surprise, Their guns were shoT Trom Their hands by ThaT high-Tlying U. S. Marshall, PisTol Packin' Polly. Then she said: 'Drop your guns, you sneakin' varminTs: This is a quieT Town. Where is ThaT boss oT yors, Killer Scanlon? SweeT DeeT and his VigilanTes are planning To clean up The Town and you have unTil sunrise To leave, or Weepin' Will and The Cavalry will be called in. We have already senT a messenger, Wah-wah, To The TorT Tor This purpose, so giTl!' Upon hearing This, Barroom BeauTy was over- ioyed. She had come To seek Weepin' Will, her long losT lover, who had been sTaTioned in The vi- ciniTy oT El Carim as head CT The U. S. Cavalry. As she hurried down The sTreeT in search oT him, she passed Wah-wah's home, where his wiTe, Max- well ChialTi, was brewing some coTTee and anxiously awaiTing her husbands rerurn. Their daughTer, Miss E. E., was ouT as usual gallavanTing wiTh Ham Burg, who was in compeTiTion wiTh Jokin' Jack Tor her aTTecTion. Unknown To Jokin' Jack, however, he was being pursued by a sTaunch admirer, Anglin' Annie, who was ouT walking wiTh her Triend, Annie Oakley. The laTTer Two suddenly sTopped. A mosT paTheTic scene greeTed Them. SmarT Aleck was proposing To Madcap Marion on The porch across The sTreeT. l-lowever, danger lurked in The air: Tor suddenly, and wiThouT warning, The Town pesT, Babe, came shrieking ouT oT The darkness. A shoT rang ouT. SmarT Aleck had shoT Babe Tor inTruding on his privacy. lmmediaTely, lTchy Fingers, El Carim's sawbones, was called To The scene. BuT iT was Too laTe. Babe was dead. Digger O'Dell and her Two assisTanTs, Giggles and Leapin' Lida, were summoned To Take The body To her business esTablishmenT. Dig- ger had become prosperous since so many people had lead poisoning. The moon was high in The sky, and The coyoTes were howling in The disTance when The Town aT lasT became quieT. AlThough all seemed calm, an eerie aTmosphere pervaded The viciniTy. ln The hideouT oT Killer Scanlon The men were Talking in hushed Tones, when The door opened and a woman sTepped ouT. Seeing Killer, she said, 'IT all goes according To plan, we'll soon own El Cariml' Then she deparTed Toward The viciniTy oT Gabby's Boarding l-louse. As The dawn broke, we saw Killer Scanlon and his gang riding Toward BashTul Bernie's gold mine. They planned To Take Trom The payroll oTTice The gold shipmenT which was To leave on The nexT sTage. Two men, DevoTing Don and Dead-Eye Dick, who were guarding The shipmenT, and were quick wiTh The peacemakers , were To be 'dry gulched'. Sneezy, meanTime, To diverT aTTenTion, was To blow up The mine enTrance: Dapper Dick was To close in on The leTT: and Rapid RoberT was To aTTack Trom The righT. Sneezy was waTing Tor The signal Trom Killer Scanlon. The resT OT The gang, ready To aTTack, were gaThered on a bluTT overlooking The mine, when suddenly a loud explosion rended The air. Sneezy had done his work well. The ouTlaws now closed in slowly, expecTing a baTTle. As They approached The mine oTTice, a loud TrumpeTing was heard. The U. S. Cavalry, which had been maneuvering in The viciniTy, had been aroused by The explosion and was now abouT To make an aTTack. ln The en- suing baTTle -- which was brieT - Three members oT Killer's gang were morTally wounded: Slim, Lucky Larry, and PeTriTied Paul. The resT escaped. The Cavalry loss was one, Winnie, The besT shoT in The baTTalion. AT The sound oT The explosion, The Townspeople immediaTely rushed To The scene. Among Them were Brewery Bruey and Leapin' Lizzie, reporTers Tor The Daily Blah, who soughT a compIeTe accounT oT The episode. Three miners - ShorTy, Be-bob, and Darlin' George - wiTh The aid oT The U. S. Cavalry, were clearing The enTrance. ATTer The debris had been moved, iT was discovered ThaT SweeT Bea, Ollie Olsen, Delighrful Dorie, Fussin' Eran, Dimple DoT, and Brainy BeT were widows. Weepin' Will, upon invesTigaTing The siTuaTion TurTher, Tound ThaT Bash- Tul Bernie had been murdered. The nexT day, Brewery Bruey, The ediTor-in-chieT, and her Three TypisTs - Sizzlin' Sue, SlueTooT Sue and Lil' Lil, were discussing The previous day's evenTs when Lippy LaPIaca enTered The oTTice oT The Daily Blah. Lippy, an agenT Trom The insurance company, was disguised as a maid in Gabby's Boarding I-louse. Now, however, she was seeking an expIanaTion oT The explosion. The mine had been insured, and BashTul Bernie had named Weepin' Will as The beneTiciary. lShe was secreTly inTaTuaTed wiTh him.l The company was invesTigaTing his claim. She inserTed an ad in The paper requesTing help Tor The parTy To be held aT Gabby's Boarding I-louse in honor oT The exceIlenT work The Cavalry had done in rounding up The resT oT Killer's gang. Gossip GerTie helped The cook, Crisco Taylor, pre- pare The meal. ln The parlor, all eyes Turned upon Queenie, who was singing, 'There's gonna' be a hoT Time in The old Town TonighT.' ATTer she had Tinished, Jugglin' Jake, wiTh his besT perTorrnance oT The season, casT a spell over The audience. Suddenly, however. The silence was broken by Chuckwagon Charlies yell. 'Come'n giT iT!' ln The middle oT The meaT course, Bronco BenTIey sTaggered in yellin' 'Whar's ma' horse?' Chasing aTTer him, was Ridin' RiTa, who was aTTemoTing To lasso her roaming Romeo.
