ludcnl Council The Student Council of Gilbert High School is one of our most active organizations under the leadership of Lowell Phipps, who has been sponsor of the council since 1944. The council was organized several years prior to that time byW. I. Chafin, a former principal. The council organizes patrols, assists in keeping order, sponsors assemblies, and does everything possible to help make our school a better school. Future Teachers of inc-rica OFFICERS President, Dimple Ellis, Secretary- Treasurer, Joan Hatfield, Historian, Helen Hatfield, Parliamentarian, Shelba Hatfield, Song Leader, Lois Coleman. The Gilbert Chapter of the Future Teachers of America was installed March 10, 1954, by the Matewan F. T. A. Club. This club was named the Gil-Hi Club and was under the sponsorship of Mrs. Mamie Browning and Mrs. Ann Phipps. With its twelve charter members the first year, the club progressed very well. The Future Teachers, still under the leadership of Mrs. Browning and Mrs. Phipps, is active again this year and is rapidly making itself a place in Gilbert High School. Its aim is to learn about opportunities in teaching, to cultivate the qualities essential to a good teacher, to study lives of great teachers, to foster development of student leadership, and to assist as a student teacher any time one is needed. 43

Future Homemakers of America The Future Homemakers of America was organized in 1950 with Mrs. Estelle Ellis as sponsor. The purpose of the club is to train girls to be better homemakers. There are two clubs now at GHS. The senior high club has 20 members and the junior high club, which was started this year, has 24 members.
