It was a hard job for the Bucs to down the equally determined Embarrass team, but they came through with a decisive vic- tory thus entering them in the next game with the tournament favorite, Eveleth. The Eveleth game is one that will be remembered not only by the team and students, but by the vast crowd that packed into the Eveleth Hippodrome, and by those who heard the game over the radio. It was a close game all through the flrst half, but in the third quarter Gilbert gained momentum and completely out played the Bears, holding as much as a sixteen point lead over the highly favored opponents. Wlien there was only one minute and twenty- seven seconds to go the Bucs held a 14 point advantage, the Eveleth Golden Bears staged a rally that grabbed the expected victory from the Gilbert five. Be- fore the team had time to gain their bearings, the Bears had nipped the lead down to one, with 11 seconds to go. A last second basket by Eveleth ended this heart-breaking game and brought to a close the 1954 season for the Buccaneers. HOMECOMING This year's basketball homecoming was much more thar1 just a gala celebration, it also marked the dedication of the new Gil- bert High Gymnasium. A pep meeting took place that afternoon and the announcement of our new 1954 queen, Marie Malkovich, was made. Everyone had basketball fever, and all were hoping to see the Gilbert Bucs pull through with a victory over the Eveleth Gold- en Bears. The game was a close one, but the Bears proved to have more punch and pulled through with a 56-53 victory over the Bucs. During the half, Mr. Aldo Frillici directed the band in formation. Gilbert basketball teams that have gone to the state and the 1951 State Champions were honored and the key to the new gym was presented to thf school by Mr. Paul Damberg, architect. After the game a dance was held at the Community Center at which Marie Malkovich was crowned queen by jack Lakso. The queens court included - princesses - Bev- erly Ambrosh and Betty jane Sissalag duchess- es -- Helen Sereno, Shirley Erickson, Darlene jofs, Shelby Curnow, Eileen Nyquist, Ellen Rose Keller, and Annette Stupca.
