Gilbert-Virginia game, the opposition controlled the ball game until there was less than three minutes to go. Then the Bucs went to work and melt- ed down Virginia's 11 point lead in their traditional last quarter style. The score was tied at 45--15 with only a few seconds to go when James Sandstrom netted a shot from mid-court to bring victory to the Bucs. Gilbert completely out-did the Hermantown Hawks in a 67-33 game. Red hot Micheletti scored 22 for the winners. The Bucs came up with their fourth straight win by trouncing Cook's Little Gophers, 58-42, but tasted defeat in their next two games at the hands of Tower and Cloquet. Two free throws brought the Eagles a 60-58 victory over the Bucs after a close last quarter. The Gilbert-Cloquet game was a one sided vic- tory for the Lumberjacks. Gilbert dropped the next two games to Ely and Esko. In the Ely game a fourth quarter rally nar- rowed the final score to 66-65. Esko handed the Bucs their eighth loss of the season when they de- feated the Kerzie five 60-46 in a non-conference game played at the U,M.D. field house. A superior height advantage brought the Falls' Broncos a 58-49 victory over Gilbert. The Bucs came out on the bottom of a 68-60 score in a hard fought game against Aurora. Although Gilbert had gained one win over Bi- wabik in the early part of the season, the Braves upset the Bucs in a low scoring game. Gilbert grab- bed an early lead, but in the final canto they were downed to the tune of 35-53. A last second two- pointer by james Vero- nick gave the Bucs an un- Michael Ahlin, Guard expected win over the Hrst place Eveleth Golden Bears. Gilbert outclassed the Bears when they gain- ed a 15 point lead by the end ofthe third period. The final game of the season showed the hard fighting Buccaneers again at the lower end of the scoring column. HOMECOMING This year's basketball homecoming was much more thar1 just a gala celebration, it also marked the dedication of the new Gil- bert High Gymnasium. A pep meeting took place that afternoon and the announcement of our new 1954 queen, Marie Malkovich, was made. Everyone had basketball fever, and all were hoping to see the Gilbert Bucs pull through with a victory over the Eveleth Gold- en Bears. The game was a close one, but the Bears proved to have more punch and pulled through with a 56-53 victory over the Bucs. During the half, Mr. Aldo Frillici directed the band in formation. Gilbert basketball teams that have gone to the state and the 1951 State Champions were honored and the key to the new gym was presented to thf school by Mr. Paul Damberg, architect. After the game a dance was held at the Community Center at which Marie Malkovich was crowned queen by jack Lakso. The queens court included - princesses - Bev- erly Ambrosh and Betty jane Sissalag duchess- es -- Helen Sereno, Shirley Erickson, Darlene jofs, Shelby Curnow, Eileen Nyquist, Ellen Rose Keller, and Annette Stupca.
