Homecoming festivities open- ed with a pep-fest made up of skits and original readings by the Hy-Dramaticers. A grave yard skit was the main highlight, with the football players participating. Three girls, acting as witches, joined to mix a kettle of every- thing into a brew, signifying the make-up of our team. At the pep-fest james Veronick announced that Annette Stupca was to be the 1953-1954 football queen. Follow- ing the pep meeting a bon-fire and a caravan took place. The Bucs kept in the shadow of their slogan holding the Tower-Soudan Eagles to a breathtaking 6-6 tie game. After a few short breathers all the fans gathered at the Community Center to witness the coronation of her majesty by co-captains james Veronick and Robert Nanti. A dance ended the two day celebration, with the Jimmy Michael's orchestra furnishing the music. james Veronick, Forward On November 25, the Gilbert Buccaneers donned their basketball togs for their Hrst try of the 1954 season. Buhl rolled up a 14 point lead in the second quarter before the Bucs caught fire and scored 16 points, narrowing the score to 21-18 at half time. Ten of these counters were dropped in by Captain jim Sandstrom, who hit for 27, the high point man of the game. The Gilbert attack came too late, however, and the Buhl five remained indomitable throughout the game. In the Gilbert-Biwabik game, the Bucs came through with a decisive, one-sided victory over the Braves. Gilbert held the lead all through the game and out classed Biwabik with their evenly divided scoring column. With one victory under their belt, the Bucs came close to defeating the highly favored Hibbing team from District 28 in a last quarter come- back. This thriller was the first game played in Gil- bert's new gym. After trailing by ten points they staged their last quarter drive, coming within two points of the jackets. James Veronick made a bas- ket with but six seconds to go, but he was fouled and the basket did not count. He tallied only one of his two free throw attempts and the game ended 58-57 in Hibbing's favor. Witli the advantage of their home court, the Mt. Iron Red Raiders handed the Bucs their first conference loss of the season. Although both teams shot well, the Raiders defeated the Bucs by a score of 62-49. Of the three games played during the holiday season the Bucs dropped two games, one to Alex- andria, 55-48, and one to West St. Paul, 41-40.
