BALL With their caps set for a victory in the last conference game of the season, the Orange and Black Bucs trekked to Deer River. The never say die Gilbert team fought their way to a 32-18 decision and their first win of the season. In order to obtain this victory the Bucs had to penetrate the 18-12 lead that was held by the Warriors at the beginning of the third quarter. Gilbert's T-D's were racked up by Nanti, who scored two, and,Micheletti, Sandstrom and Vero- nick with one a piece. The Buc's passing and blocking in this game proved ef- fective, and was the main reason for their first victory. The teams record stood as one win, four losses and two ties when they went into the final game of the season, a non-conference with the Grand Marais Vikings. There was no scoring in the first half, but both teams were evenly matched in offense and defense. After the first touchdown was made by Grand Marais the Bucs staged an 83 yard drive and crossed the stripe to tie the ball game at 6-6. Another T-D by the Vikings and another by Gilbert again knot- ted the score at 12-12. It was an all around even ball game until Grand Marais scored another touchdown which the Bucs were unable to match. The end of the game found Grand Marais in the winning column with a 18-12 victory over the Bucs. Thus ended the 1953 season of play for the Orange and Black. The laughs, thrills and heartbreaks will remain vivid in our memory as this year's seniors leave the halls of G.H.S. In departure from their alma mater they leave behind a tradition to be upheld by the remaining members of the team. This tradition is their strong fighting spirit, the will to get up and win even though the odds are against them. - or 4 , 1, 9553 'W xl 4 lvTsi , Tr ' i L3 5 Ha it lngi 'X ,Q '11 -xi . . , ' M5541 IL' A l i X in 1 mi? Homecoming festivities open- ed with a pep-fest made up of skits and original readings by the Hy-Dramaticers. A grave yard skit was the main highlight, with the football players participating. Three girls, acting as witches, joined to mix a kettle of every- thing into a brew, signifying the make-up of our team. At the pep-fest james Veronick announced that Annette Stupca was to be the 1953-1954 football queen. Follow- ing the pep meeting a bon-fire and a caravan took place. The Bucs kept in the shadow of their slogan holding the Tower-Soudan Eagles to a breathtaking 6-6 tie game. After a few short breathers all the fans gathered at the Community Center to witness the coronation of her majesty by co-captains james Veronick and Robert Nanti. A dance ended the two day celebration, with the Jimmy Michael's orchestra furnishing the music. The queen's court included - princesses, Barbara Kukar and Carol Stupcag duchesses - Helen Sereno, Donna Lakso, Ellen Keller, and Darlene jofs. Escorts were james Veronick, Robert Nanti, james Sandstrom, Russell Palso, David Lopp, Edward Kodunce, and Richard Butala.
