r ' it c ' ..,, W P ii-5 'Li Co-cap! Robert Nan ti FCJOT The Gilbert High School Buccaneers started off the 1955 football season in low gear by being defeated by the Aurora Blackhawks, 27-O. Though the Buc's play was marked with considerable fumbling they showed their fighting spirit and stiff defense by holding the victory-bound Hawks scoreless in the third quarter. They were, however, unable to stop Aurora's thirteen point deluge which came in the last period of play. The Bucs suffered their second loss of the season at the hands of the Nashwauk Colts in a lopsided tussle. This night game was a rough, tough one sided struggle. They came closer to victory in the homecoming game against the Tower- Soudan Eagles by holding them to a 6-6 tie. Tower Soudan scored the first touchdown in the remaining 35 seconds of the third quarter. Gilbert's scoring pass from Micheletti to Sandstrom was just 3 minutes before the final gun went off. Both the teams failed the extra point attempt and so ended the homecoming game for 53. The rampaging Bucs next sank their teeth into the unbeaten Mt. Iron eleven and came up with another tie game. After many trips just short of the goal line the Bucs finally forced themselves into the end zone via a pass from Veronick to Fumia. The team showed fine defensive play in this well-matched struggle. The next threat to the fighting Bucs was the strong Buhl team. The Bull- dogs dominated this 26-9 skirmish which was literally all wet when it began to rain late in the fourth quarter. -w ff.ffl1ff'ii i . ,J . BALL With their caps set for a victory in the last conference game of the season, the Orange and Black Bucs trekked to Deer River. The never say die Gilbert team fought their way to a 32-18 decision and their first win of the season. In order to obtain this victory the Bucs had to penetrate the 18-12 lead that was held by the Warriors at the beginning of the third quarter. Gilbert's T-D's were racked up by Nanti, who scored two, and,Micheletti, Sandstrom and Vero- nick with one a piece. The Buc's passing and blocking in this game proved ef- fective, and was the main reason for their first victory. The teams record stood as one win, four losses and two ties when they went into the final game of the season, a non-conference with the Grand Marais Vikings. There was no scoring in the first half, but both teams were evenly matched in offense and defense. After the first touchdown was made by Grand Marais the Bucs staged an 83 yard drive and crossed the stripe to tie the ball game at 6-6. Another T-D by the Vikings and another by Gilbert again knot- ted the score at 12-12. It was an all around even ball game until Grand Marais scored another touchdown which the Bucs were unable to match. The end of the game found Grand Marais in the winning column with a 18-12 victory over the Bucs. Thus ended the 1953 season of play for the Orange and Black. The laughs, thrills and heartbreaks will remain vivid in our memory as this year's seniors leave the halls of G.H.S. In departure from their alma mater they leave behind a tradition to be upheld by the remaining members of the team. This tradition is their strong fighting spirit, the will to get up and win even though the odds are against them. - or 4 , 1, 9553 'W xl 4 lvTsi , Tr ' i L3 5 Ha it lngi 'X ,Q '11 -xi . . , ' M5541 IL' A l i X in 1 mi?
