During his administration, the faculty has increased to forty- four and the annual enrollment to sixteen hundred. The Gid- eon School system has recently been assigned an AA ratinlg by the State Department of du- cation. Onl school systems offering a of 34 rfz approved high school units and meeting other standards can be classified as AA. Mr. Hoy has servedas presi- dent of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association and as a member of the Advisory Com- mittee under two state superin- tendems. For a number of years he was a member of the Legislative Committee of the Missouri State Teachers Associ- ation. He is recognized as dean of New Madrid County School men. Missouri law provides that school d.istricts in which there is a city of the fourth class shall be governed by a board of six di- rectors. Two members are elected every year for a term ofthree years. This provision lends continuity and stability, and enables the board to plan for future needs. The board and superintendent work out the general policies of the slchool. Details involved in administration are left to the prin- cipa s. lt is the policy of the board and faculty members to promote such measures as will make better citizens of the students. The community is obligated to provide educational opportunity to the students. n the other hand, the students are obligated to take advantage of the opportunities offered. Members of the board serve without monetary reward. Their only compensation lies in the fact that they are renderinga worth- while service to the community.

CARL D. GUM B. S. in Education S.E. Mo. State Collage A. M. University of 0. Columbia University New York, New York Mr. Gum came to Gideon as V34 high school principal in 1948. He had formerly served as rin- cipalof the Nevada High School, and as principal of the Indepen- dence High School, before go- ing to Merriam, Kansas as pun- xcgmal of the Shawnee-Mission gh School. Most of his grad- uate work was done in the field of secondary education. Since Mr. Gum assumed his duties as principal of the Gideon High School, a number of new courses have been added to the course of study. The activity program has been reorganized so that the home room is an integral part of the school's administration. Mr. Gum is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and a past presi- dent of e Missouri Secondary School Principals Association.
