Class Prophecy Ladies and Gentlemen: The story you are about to hear is true. Only the time has been changed to write this story. My name is Joe Tuesday. I am a cop. My partner, Harry Haggerty, and I have settled many cases, but this one was the worst. It was Friday morning, June 13, l96h, in the city of Gettysburg. I was sitting in the office when the phone rang. I lifted the receiver and to my surprise it was Phyllis Lecklider, an old school mate of mine. I tried to inquire of my other friends but she was too excited to tell me anything about them. She did say she had bought a large fur industry which she called, WPhyl's Furs for Coats,n and had a very rare breed of cats which produced this fur. Last night someone had stolen all the cats. She asked if I would take the case and so I said, HYes.W I hung up the receiver, called Harry, and started toward Phyl's. It was lO:h2 A.M. when I picked up Harry. At 11:15 A.M. we arrived at Phy1's farm. After questioning Phyl, her family, and employees, I obtained the names and addresses of several people who might be connected with this case. The first name was Ray Lavy. He owned a large dairy fanm which supplied the milk for Phyl's cats. At 1:32 P.M. we arrived at the Lavy Dairy Farm Inc. Ray came to the door of his office and I recognized him at once, one of my class mates of '5h. I asked Ray many questions which he answered with no hesitation. I could see at once he was innocent, and he gave us a lead. He said he had seen someone at Phyl's about 12:30 P.M. last night, about 6 feet 2 inches tall, 185 pounds, dark hair, and wore ragged clothes. After a few words of the past, Harry and I started out again. It was now h:36 P.M. We went back to the office to check the files for the description we had been given. After we had finished, tired and weary from the day, I sat down in my chair and picked up the papers to see what else was happening. On the front page in big letters was, UPresident of the United States, Hadley de Bordeaux, speaks tonight.H Hadley, President? But he always was a good politician. As I turned to the sport page, there was a large picture of the world's greatest champion golfer, and under the picture were the words, HMarilyn Eley wins again. W Marilyn is little, but mighty. In the society section was a big article about the wedding of Miss Kathleen Small. She married a rich Englishman and was president of the Women's Welfare. Kathy was doing fine. There was one other section that caught my eye. It was WHints for You,N written by Phyllis Hartle. It seems Phyllis had become a great writer and had taken up where Emily Post had left off and was giving her version on etiquette. I didn't know so many of my friends had become so famous. It was 5:00 P.M. when I laid the paper down. Harry had gone on home. I put the information we had in the safe, then decided to eat supper and relax by going to a T.V. show. I went into a little restaurant called, WBetty's Fine Foodsgn a waitress came over to take my order and it was Betty Grise. Betty said she owned the restaurant and enjoyed her work. There in a boothwnne Merlin Keeler and Marilyn Lecklider, so I sat down to chat with them. Merlin said he was a professor at the College of Brains in Gettysburg. Marilyn said she was an English teacher and had taken the place of Miss Bucholtz. A few minutes later E.J. Cissner and Gene Shoenleben came in. What a surprise! It seems E.J. was owner of the largest Quiet factory in the world, and Gene, a highly recommended carpenter. we had a wonderful chat. At 6:lh I left the restaurant. I started toward the T.V. studio, then I noticed a sign, Barb Byram, Beautician. The shop was open, so I went in. Barb was doing fine with her business. After reviewing the past I went on to the theater. I bought my ticket and went in just in time to hear the advertising for Jim Grote's Auto Plant. Jim couldn't keep his old car together so he designed his own car, and went into the business. Then I heard the announcer say, HAnd now, Ralph Lyme and his Friends.H Ralph, because he has red hair, had taken over Arthur Godfrey's program. Ralph greekd everyone in his usual friendly way, then introduced two girls. They were Janice Hahn and Janice Hendrickson. The girls had become very popular singers. After the program I left the theater and ran into Norma Miller who had just gotten to town. Norma said she was an airline hostess for T.W.A. and liked her work. I asked about Patty Holsapple and Nonua said Patty was married, had a nice family, and lived in the little town of Greenville. From there I went home. The next day I was back on the job trying to solve this case. We checked everywhere. Several people said they had seen the same man, and gave us the same description. But we couldn't get the right lead. I called the F.B.I. to get some more details. Daniel Binkley answered the phone. Danny had become an F.B.I. agent and said he would help in every way he could. Days passed. Still no news. Then on June 23, we got a lead. Someone said they saw a man of the said description going into the Metropolitan Opera House in Gettysburg. Harry and I went down immediately. As we entered we heard some one playing the piano. We went to SSB Roberta Wetzel rehearsing for her next appearance. we questioned her to see if she had seen the suspect. She said she'd seen a man of that description leave about fifteen minutes ago. As we left we met Marlene Small. Marlene said she was a cheerleading instructor and had come to have lunch with Roberta. we went back to the office to see if any calls had come in. There was one from the F.B.I. saying they had picked up a man who was a tailor. After questioning, he confessed, but said the only reason he took the cats was to make kitten britches out of cat fur. On July 21, l96h, he was sentenced to wear a coat made of cat fur his entire life. 8
