EOR PEACE, WE ARE GRATEEUI. mamma D America's top military commander, General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, holds nearly every honor the grateful United States can give him-but here in our own Gettysburg, twenty-eight years ago, he did such outstanding work that he was given special recognition for his fine leadership. The man who was to be Chief of Staff of the American Army and Supreme Commander in the European part of World War II received the Distinguished Service Medal for his work in Gettysburg during the First World Wai: when he was commandant of Camp Colt here. The cita- tion for the medal reads: '1While commanding officer of the Tank Corps training center from March 23, 1918, to November 18, 1918, at Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he displayed unusual zeal, fore- sight, and marked administrative ability in the organization, training, and preparation for overseas service of technical troops of the Tank Corpsf' 'X His zeal, foresight, and administrative ability all came to the fore in an even greater degree in World War H, when he leaped from Commanding General, European Theater, of the American troops in June 1942, to Commander in Chief of Allied Forces in North Africa in November 1942, and finally to Commanding General of the Allied Forces in the European Theater of Operations on December 31, 1943. Born October 14, 1890, in Tyler, Texas, General Eisenhower became an army officer al- most by accident. During the year following his graduation from high school, he toolc competi- tive examinations for both West Point and Annapolis. He finished first in the Annapolis tests, and second in the West Point competition. just as he was about to enter the Naval Academy, he dis- covered that he was several months too old for admission. At the same time, the man who gained first place in the West Point test declined the appointment, and Eisenhower began his military career. This led General Eisenhower to various parts of the United States and elsewhere. He served in Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Maryland, and for a time in 1918, he served at Gettysburg, training tank corps men. He was also stationed in the Panama Canal zone and the Philippine Islands. In 1940, he started a career as chief of staff of various units including the Third Division, then the Ninth Army Corps, and finally the Third Army. Eisenhower returned to Washington, where he had .served before, as chief of the War Plans Division of the War Department General Staff. From there, he moved through increasingly important posts until he was sent to head the ETO soldiers. In a schoolhouse in Reims, France, General Eisenhower received the unconditional surren- der of the German High Command which terminated hostilities in Europe on May 8, 1945. After serving as military governor of the United States Occupied Zone in Germany, he returned to suc- ceed General George C. Marshall as Chief of Staff in November.1945. four '
