Eisenhower, holds nearly every honor the grateful United States can give him-but here in our own Gettysburg, twenty-eight years ago, he did such outstanding work that he was given special recognition for his fine leadership. The man who was to be Chief of Staff of the American Army and Supreme Commander in the European part of World War II received the Distinguished Service Medal for his work in Gettysburg during the First World Wai: when he was commandant of Camp Colt here. The cita- tion for the medal reads: '1While commanding officer of the Tank Corps training center from March 23, 1918, to November 18, 1918, at Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he displayed unusual zeal, fore- sight, and marked administrative ability in the organization, training, and preparation for overseas service of technical troops of the Tank Corpsf' 'X His zeal, foresight, and administrative ability all came to the fore in an even greater degree in World War H, when he leaped from Commanding General, European Theater, of the American troops in June 1942, to Commander in Chief of Allied Forces in North Africa in November 1942, and finally to Commanding General of the Allied Forces in the European Theater of Operations on December 31, 1943. Born October 14, 1890, in Tyler, Texas, General Eisenhower became an army officer al- most by accident. During the year following his graduation from high school, he toolc competi- tive examinations for both West Point and Annapolis. He finished first in the Annapolis tests, and second in the West Point competition. just as he was about to enter the Naval Academy, he dis- covered that he was several months too old for admission. At the same time, the man who gained first place in the West Point test declined the appointment, and Eisenhower began his military career. This led General Eisenhower to various parts of the United States and elsewhere. He served in Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Maryland, and for a time in 1918, he served at Gettysburg, training tank corps men. He was also stationed in the Panama Canal zone and the Philippine Islands. In 1940, he started a career as chief of staff of various units including the Third Division, then the Ninth Army Corps, and finally the Third Army. Eisenhower returned to Washington, where he had .served before, as chief of the War Plans Division of the War Department General Staff. From there, he moved through increasingly important posts until he was sent to head the ETO soldiers. In a schoolhouse in Reims, France, General Eisenhower received the unconditional surren- der of the German High Command which terminated hostilities in Europe on May 8, 1945. After serving as military governor of the United States Occupied Zone in Germany, he returned to suc- ceed General George C. Marshall as Chief of Staff in November.1945. four ' 51X 1u: ' SCI-IDOL BOARD Mr. Mahlon P. Hartzell, secretaryg Mr. George T. Raffenspergerg Mr. Paul M. Rohr- baughg Mr. Charles B. TO TI-IE CLASS OF 1946: As a guide to living and serving in a world sorely in need of the best all can give, I commend to you these words from the notebook of Elbert Hubbard. The Supreme prayer of my heart is not to be learned, rich, famous, powerful, or even good, but simply to be radiant. I desire to radiate health, cheer- fulness, calm courage and good-will. I wish to live without hate, whim, jealousy, envy, fear. I wish to be simple, honest, frank, natural, clean in mind and clean in body, unaffected, and to meet all men in an absolute equality, to face any obstacle and meet every difficulty unabashed and unafraid. L. C. KEEFAUVER Superintendent of Schools MR. Gurus W. LEFEVER r 1 X. DR. LLOYD C. KEEFAUVER TO THE CLASS OF 1646: No people in the world today have as much to be thankful for as the American youth about to graduate from the public high school. He has the opportunity to help build a world community with common understanding, common ideas, and common ideals. He will help restore the good and right which peoples must believe in and practice if we are to have a Democracy that will survive. The opportunity to work and develop is here for you. G. W. L.-ni fifty-seven HEART TROUBLE Laura Morrison, a young small town girl, seeking some escape from her boring, humdrum life, becomes infatuated with a professional golfer from the city, Conrad Tyler. Mrs. Morrison, a very ambitious woman, attempts to force her family into more social affairs, to the great disgust of her husband, who is faced with the task of trying to keep his family within its means. Meanwhile, Junior Morrison falls in love with Lenore Appleby, the daughter of Jethro Appleby, a wealthy banker. This enrages Mr. Appleby, and still further complications arise from the unhappiness of Tommy Caler, Laura's former boy friend. Tommy pretends to be in love with Patricia in order to regain Laura's affection. However, all prob- lems come to a successful solution. Directed by Miss Ruth Scott, the play was presented to secure funds to purchase new stage equipment. CAST OF CHARACTERS zllry. Morrison llfr. Morrison Laura . Patricia .. In order to keep Morgan, Anita's fiance, from discovering the situation, they tell him that the money was left Anita by an Uncle William who died in the West. Morgan and his mother are anti-gambling addicts and the engagement would stand in jeopardy if they found out how the money was really secured. The little lies grow beyond the control of the two girls in an amusing series of climaxes. Most amusing and concerned is Grandma, who has to be convinced that she had a son William. Morgan finally sees a Haw and looks into the matter to discover the deception, but he keeps his discovery to himself. He hires a cowboy and an Indian squaw-actors--to come and blackmail Anita for half the money. They are to represent William's partner and wife. Anita realizes what Morgan has done, so she scares the two with threats and they leave. She then tells Morgan that she gave them the money, and he is very much worried, for they were supposed to give the money back to him, but he can't find them. Finally the situation is cleared, and Anita is conceded to be very clever indeed. This play, directed by Miss Ruth Scott, was presented by members of the senior class on the evenings of March 21 and 22. Anita Ilflereditfi ...... Diana Meredith ..... Grandma Bantry ..,,,.,.
