Trains are a big part of the Get- tysburg industry and are seen daily traveling through our campus. The cupola of Penn hall was once used as a look out during the Civil War by the Confederate Army. Penn Hall is celebrating its 150th anniversary. During the Civil War, in 1863, it was used as a hospital by the Confederate Army. Spectrum 1988 Musselman Library We've Come A Long Way Gettysburg college was found- ed by a Lutheran clergyman by the name of Samuel Schmucker 11799-18781. The charter was drawn up on April 27, 1832, es- tablishing the Pennsylvania Col- lege of Gettysburg . Although, it was not until 1921 that the charter was amended to change the name to Gettysburg College. The first curriculum consisted of seven liberal arts courses: gram- mer, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music. All cIasses, dormitory areas and dining facilities centered around Pennsylvania Hall. In 1889, Glatfalter Hall was built, but it was not until the 1920's that Gettysburg College began growing at a rapid rate. In the 1920's Weidensall Hall, Briendenbaugh Science Hall, Ed- die Plank Memorial Gymnasium and Schmucker Memorial Li- brary were built. In the 1950's Hanson Hall, Christ Chapel, Din- ' ing Hall and Stine, Rice, Paul, Musselman, Patrick and Apple Halls were completed. With the 1960's came the College Union Building, Master's Hall, Bream Phys. Ed. Building, Musselamn Stadium and McCreary Hall. Re- cently, the Musselman Library was built. : Pennsylvania Hall Glatflater Hall Huber Hall I Today Gettysburg College reflects on a rich history and looks anxiously towards its future. Currently twenty-one majors are offered with many students pursuing interdisci- plinary and seIf-designed areas of study. It is true that academia has changed a lot on the Get- tysburg campus but so has the social life. Today the campus houses eleven fra- ternities and seven sorori- ties. An ever growing alterna- tive to the Greek life are stu- dent sponsored dances, lectures, movies and con- certs. Student run publica- tions, radio station and snack bar, are but a few of the options. Varsity, inter- mural and recreational sports provide athletic op- portunities for students. Various religious pro- grams are also available for students of various affili- ations. Professor Bugbee carries on a con- versation with one of his students. t mwxmw'w Still smiling after a long and hard wor- kout. Jessica Desmond and Mindy Swan stop for a picture on their way to class. Ii Brian McClinton trys to steal some- thing from his friend, Amy Kall. A hot summeHs day on the Gettys- burg campus and students are enjoy- ing every minute of it. The Battle- field The Battlefield is an im- portant part of Gettysburg and Gettysburg college. The long winding roads, the flowing streams, and the vast fields are a place of peace and tran- quility. One can always find a great place for a picnic lunch on a sunny spring or autumn day. Their monuments, though, are still a reminder of what once happened here over a hundred years ago. . 11W. V . ,w v 4. Liz Barns, Theresa Farwell and Jen Markel are just hanging out at Bream E gym. Wearing tinsel on their heads Diane Macnamara, Kris Hessler and Kate O'Donnell celebrate the Christmas holiday. Sue Firth helps her little friend Shaina Wright dress up like an elf. The gang,s all here: A pre- formal Alpha Xi card game. 18 Many of us came here as little innocents, leaving the shelter and security of our family and friends for the first time. We came here seeking what we were told were to be, che best years of our life . Arriving to college to meet our first friend, our roommate, that we had been paired with based on a few items that we checked off on a tiny piece of paper. Through this, we learned to accept peo- ple who are dif- ferent from our- selves and to learn from them. After fresh- man year. many of these friend- ships ended and, after peo- ple found their new niche at Gettysburg, but many of them lasted to survive the four year test of time at Gettysburg Col- lege. We have created some of the strongest ties we have ever known, only to realize that at the end of the four years many of us will never see each other again.
