From its earliest days Gettysburg College has been an institution dedi- cated to serve the cause of liberal education in changing times as stated in the original charter. This chatter, drawn up on April 27, 1832, established the Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg. Not until 1921 was this charter amended to change the name to Gettysburg College. The school's Chief founder was Samuel Simon Schmucker 0799-18730, a Lutheran clergyman In the fall of 1832 the first students began to attend classes at Gettysburg. The College's earliest curriculum included the seven liberal arts: gram- mer, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. All classes, living quarters, and dining facilities centered around the College Edifice built in 1837. Today this building houses all administrative offices and is known as Pennsylvania Hall. Much of Gettysburg's rich heritage is centered around the Civil War. Students and faculty are constantly reminded of this era of history by the surrounding battlefields and monuments. In 1863 Pennsylvania Hall was occupied by the Confederate Army and served as a Hospital for several weeks. Today a thirty-four star flag flies over the building as a reminder of its role in the battle As the years went by many changes came to Gettysburg. In 1884 the first fraternity chapter house was built. This lodge, built by the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi, is named Millet Hall, and is one of the oldest Phi Psi chapter houses in the country. In 1888 the first woman student was admitted. However women were not fully welcomed on campus and in the 1920's the trustees decided to close administration to women. No women attended Gettysburg College from 1933 to 1935. After that date, women were again admitted, and today enrollment is almost equally divided between men and women. Gradually more buildings and facilities were added to meet the growing enrollment. In 1889, Glatfelter Hall was built. During the 1920's Weiden- shall Hall, Breidenbaugh Science Hall, Eddie Plank Memorial Gymnasium, and Schmucker Memorial Library were built. In the 1950's Hanson Hall, Christ Chapel, Stine, Rice, and Paul Halls, Musselman and Patrick Halls, Apple Hall, and the Dining Hall were completed. The 1960's saw the addition of the College Union Building, Sieber-Fishet Infirmary, Masters Hall, Bream Physical Education Building, Musselman Stadium, the Presi- dent's residence, and McCreary Hall. In the 1970's Hauser Field House was constructed as part of Bream Gym. The most recent addition to the Campus is Musselman Library and Learning Center. The braty was completed in 1981 and houses more than 300,000 volumes. Renovations to Apple and Breidenbaugh Halls have also enhanced the campus. Today Gettysburg College Can reflect on its rich history while looking towards its future. The 200 acre campus is beating with the pulse of learning and social activity. Currently 21 majors are offered as well as Opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary and self-designed areas of special- ization. A wide variety of special programs include: study abroad, intern- ships, and the CooPerative College Consortium with Dickinson and Frank lin and Marshall Colleges. Social life on campus has come a long way since 1910, when the first dance was held in the Sweat Box , a room on the second floor of Glatfelter Hall. Today student sponsored dances, lectures, movies, con- certs, and coffeehouses offer a wide variety of activities. Student run publications and the radio station are also options. Gettysburg College supports eleven national fraternities and seven national sororities, making Greek life a vital aspect of the Campus. Varsity, intetmural, and recreational sports provide athletic opportunities for students of all skill levels. Reli- gious programs for students of all faiths are also available. There are as many ways to obtain the Gettysburg experience as there are people inhabiting the campus. We pass through the halls, walk through the town, and all leave our own mark here. Each individual brings his or her own past and together we all create our futune. The years spent on this campus will never come again, yet once experienced they will never leave us. The Chapter was graced with 9 quality pledges, and their new little sisters. Founded in 1958, the chapter has con- tinued to grow academically, athletically and social- ly. Many members of AXP participate in varsity sports, such as football, basketball, track and wres- tling. Crow is also noted for its strong intramural teams. Socially, Crow is noted for its fabulous 4 in 1 party, the annual April outdoor reggae band party, Thursday night clubs, and its incredible band par- ties. Academically, the fraternity is consistantly in the top 11. Besides academics, Crow devoted much time to its philanthropy this year. Once again Crow held its annual Rock-a-thon raising money for Cere- bral Paisey. In closing, we would like to wish this year's sen- iors and the entire Greek community well in their future years. Since our founding at Gettysburg College in 1961, we have become a chapter that each member can be proud of. We began the year with an unbeatable new pledge Class of 34, and continued to keep busy helping New Oxford welcome Santa Claus and raising money through our biannual bookmart for our philanthropy, The Ronald McDonald House. ADPi has also been very busy around campus. Many of our sisters are active as RA'S, Orientation leaders and participate in a wide variety of sports, as well as holding positions on the Honor Commission and Student Conduct Review Board. Alpha Delta also took part in and placed first in DOS annual Anchor Splash, intramural flag football and floor hockey. We concluded a productive year with our annual Seniors' Formal at the Maryland Hunt Valley Marriot and a beautiful Seniors' ceremony at the covered bridge. 154 Alpha Delta Pi Tenley and Annie - Fast friends y Torallo, Sarah Wendt; Row 2: KristiejohnA gita Patel, jen Davis; Row 5: Sue Karabin, Karin Hagen Fredricksen, Sharon Seniors teaching the pledges their favorite song. ? In its 105th year on campus, the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega has firmly established itself as a force in all areas of campus life. Its ranks provide officers for the Honor Commission, BACCHUS, and WZBT. For WZBT, ATO continued its tradition of hosting the station's spring concert with the Miracle Legioanatie Bar the Door show. Almost every member of the brotherhood and the affiliated Sister of the Maltese Cross participates in some activity, either extracurricular or athletic. ATO has had teams in all intramural sports. Most notable has been the soccer team, which had the largest and most vocal contingent of fans seen in recent years for any intramural Squad. The team itself did well, boasting the only victory over the champions. But ATO has other concerns besides the campus. It has assisted in all of the philanthropic activities organized by students, and both ATO and SMC have sponsored such events on their own more than once. In the classroom, disregarding its many Presidential scholars, prides itself on its fine relationship with the faculty. This has confirmed by the attendance at our faculty cocktail party. But even ifATO had nothing else to offer but itself, the campus would be enriched. The idea ofindividuality that dominates ATO and the SMC makes everything else that we do for the campus possible. And yet, even though we are not as small as we were, we still are as closeknit. Complete freedom is the spirit of this chapter, and through this we have achieved the goals of our fraternity's founders to such an extent that whoever is associated with our house is proud to say I am an ATO. 156 Alpha Tau Omega A typical day at ATO iWell, not to typical actually; I mean, it was snowing . . . l 1' Santa Claus and his ATO SMC helpers at the Zion Church In Gettysburg, where they provided a Christmas party for local youths. Starting offthe year with the annual pancake breakfast, Alpha Xi raised a large sum of money for their philanthropy, the American Lung Association. Alpha Xi quickly adjusted to Panhel's decision to hold formal Rush in the fall by planning a Mickey Mouse theme for the Rushees. Then they prepared their usual production of Grease which was a big success. Alpha Xi was soon rewarded with twenty-nine enthusiastic pledges who received their bids in October. Thanks to the pledges and sisters, Alpha Xi holds the highest GPA ofall the sororities for the fall of 1986. Through the sorority takes their academics seriously their studies do not prevent them from having fun. Alpha Xi had a hat party with SAE. 21 TGIF party with Phi Delta, and 21 Reggae party with AXP. The Tau Delta chapter of Chi Omega experienced a most exciting 1986- 1987 year at Gettysburg College. The Chi Omega's hosted their national Governing council for the 50th AnniveISary of the chapter on the Gettysburg College Campus. For a halfa century, Chi Omega has been a strong and active part of the campus and community. During the Fall semester, Chi-O held their retreat to plan their activities and prepare for 21 busy year ahead. Fall Rush week was an overwhelming success for the sisters who were pleased to accept 32 new pledges. These outstanding girls showed their Chi-O spirit by planning a successful pledge raid tojohns Hopkins, raking leaves for the Gettysburg community, and working diligently on their scholarship. Sisters and pledges both enjoyed their Crush Dance with SAE, parents weekend with TKE, Chi Omunga with FIJI, and the Halloween party with Phi Delt. Chi Omega also celebrated Halloween by selling triCk-or-treaties for their philanthropy, Survivors. Second semester began installing a new Chapter at Franklin and Marshall, as well as the initation of their own pledges. In the spring the semester came to a close with a Parent's Weekend cocktail party, the Eleusianian breakfast and our annual Senior's Formal. For the brothers and alumni at Sigma Chi, This 1986-87 year has been a year of positive change. Post e Christmas break found a neutralized brotherhood and an enthusiastic pledge class working in harmony to put the physical as well as ritualistic aspects of the house back together. Several previous years of apathetic neglect had left the house in poor physical and spiritual shape. Under the guise of Mike Mahoney and a motivated executive committee driven by Vice President Andy Corey, the brothers and pledges began to change things. From ripping up the infamous beer-soaked carpet on the first floor, to scrubbing away years of stains and mildew, to reorganizing brothers' and executive committee meetings, to make amends with the school adminis- tration. the national chapter, and the community. The brotherhood and pledge class put Sigma Chi back on its feet. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, Sigma Chi has always been an attractive social house. The brothers, however, set out to complement this outer attracti- veness with inner unity. Powerful intramural athletic teams, an always enjoy- able Derby Days week, a gala initiation Ceremony, and a present brotherhood fifty-five strong, have combined to instill that unity. The brothers at Sigma Chi are proud ofwhat we have accomplished, and we look forward to continued and growing fellowship and success. The brothers :lt Sigma Chi wish our 1987 graduates a healthy and successful step into the real world. In Hoc Vinces Signo Vinces. During the past year Sig Kap has been very busy. The year began with a rush retreat to finalize rush plans and get everyone psyched for rush. Bid Night brought us 12 fantastic pledges! Their pledge formal was held on November 15 at ATO. The Sigma Kappa annual Week of Giving was held in November, ending with a Founder's Day ceremony on November 9th. During Week of Giving we raised money through a lollipop sale to Help Sigma Kappa lick Alzheimer's Disease! On Pnrents' Weekend we tailgated with our parents before the football game. The first semester ended with a Secret Santa party and a Shake break at McDonald's. Second semester began with a party at Theta Chi given by our pledges with initiation following a few weeks later. Senior Appreciation Week was held in March. The Seniors' Formal was held on March 28th at the Gettysburg Country Club. Other activities included our annual St. Patrick's Day Party with Sigma Nu, a cocktail party with Theta Chi on Spring Parents' Weekend, and numerous visits to our local philanthropy, Green Acres. Our chapter supported many new Sigma Kappa chapters across the nation by contributiny,y money to their founding. We also enjoyed a visit from the Sigma Kappa Chapter at Susquehanna University during Greek Week. We look forward to another exciting and active year at Gettysburg, but all of the graduating seniors will be sadly missed. Once again Zeta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity celebrated a banner year on the campus of Gettysburg College. In the fall, the chaptefs major philanthropies, the Haunted House, raised over $2,300 for Downtown Gettys- burg Inc. After a successful rush, both brothers and pledges played an active role in many campus organizations, such as IFC, Honor Commission, Intra- murals and many others. Neighborhood and Faculty receptions were re-established by the Chapter, seeking to improve relations in both of these areas for the Greek system. Traditional social events, such as the annual Twenties Party and Hawiian Party proved to be enjoyable, as did Our first annual Sigma Zu party. In the spring, the Brotherhood participated in Greek Week festivities and placed first among fraternities and third overall during competition. On April 25, 1987. the chapter celebrated the burning of it's final mortgage and the chapter's 500th initiate with its annual White Rose Formal. The chapter is looking forward to a successful 1987-88 term, continuing its efforts to serve Gettysburg College and its surrounding community. 180 Sigma Nu Brothers of Sigma Nu cheer the Bullets on to victory! and John Teminko '. y . 1 i .5 1' v u Pledge Marshall Steve Eck reads instructions to pledg 1 Es Todd Bish Sigma Sigma Sigma awww mVWg.-n4.ev- ' J? 2, , e if: r Row 1: Liz Youse, Terry anon, Vicki Bounds, Marilynn Messick; Row 2: Tracey SheehanJennifer Stackfleth, Kelly 4: Pam Wilson. A successful fall and spring rush program added eight more Sigmas to the ranks, increasing mem- bership to fourteen. Two pledge formals were held, one in the spring and one in the fall, and both nights turned out to be spectacular. Other events have included a Sigma Christ- mas party, a Parent's Weekend Brunch and Building party, and participation in Sigma Sigma Sigma's National 89th Founder's Day Celebration. The year has brought about many changes for Sigma Sigma Sigma. Two visits by Na- tional officers have filled our heads with new ideas for rush and other Chapter program- ming. In addition, Tekes helped raise $8,000 for the College Phone-A-Thon and organized a Canned Food Drive for the Gettysburg community. Athletically, T.K.E. again supplied the Gettysburg Varsity squads with key athletes. Tekes anchored varsity positions on the football, baseball and basketball teams, and T.K.E. boasts the captain of the wrestling team and co-captains of the lacrosse team. T.K.E. also maintained winning tradition in the intramural sports program. Socially, T.K.E. continues to be a leader with our Double Shot BandtDj party and other assorted functions featuring our own DJ, Run T.K.E. .
