Getz, current president of the Music Educatofs National Conference, and under the student leadership of Richard Hulbrink performs at special chapel services and concerts through- out the year. Composed of approximately 72 dedicated students the college choir is primarily a performance and touring group. This year the choir per- formed a series of Sunday concerts in the area, including performances in Washington DC, Baltimore M.D., and Lancaster PA. During the J-term break the group traveled south performing in North Carolina, Georgia, Ken- tucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The highlight of the year was the 16-day European Concert Tour. The college choir traveled to Germany, Italy, Swit- zerland, Liechtenstein, France, and Belgium. The group performed concerts in various cathedrals throughout Europe including the Salzburg Cathedral, the Wilten Basilica and an Alpine Village. The tour culminated in Paris where the choir performed an afternoon concert in the Notre Dame Cathedral. 29 30 The Chapel Choir, under the direc- tion of Mr. Michael Matsinko, pro- vides musical leadership for Sunday chapel services by leading the hymns and liturgy, and by providing weekly anthems. In addition, the choir com- bines with the college choir in per- forming the annual Christmas con- cert, and this year the two choirs performed for the High School Teacheris choral reading session held on campus. The choir spent 3 days on tour performing in Easton, Pa., Mur- ray Hill N.J., and Elizabeth,NJ.F01- lowing the tour, the Chapel Choir concluded the year by presenting their annual Spring concert in Christ Chapel. WOMENiS CHORUS ALPHA PSI OMEGA: Theater The Alpha Psi Omega is the oldest college theatre organization in the country. Owl and Nightingale gives college students a variety of opportunities to become involved in the theatre by performing as well as directing. This year the OSLN players presented 4 major productions, beginning in Oc- tober with iiDark of the Moonh, directed by ED. Schmidt. In January, Guare,s THouse of Blue Leavesh directed by Doug Wallace, was present- ed followed in March by Giraudouxis uThe Mad- woman of Chaillotii directed by Ms. Bonnie Ga- ble. The final production of the season was iTSpring Dance? directed by Hayley F. Hoffman. mhILQZNNJEQNZ Rb NQO 31 Coach Lois Bowersl 1982 field hockey team finished their season with a 4-6-4 record. This mark is not totally indicative of the talent on the team, however, as several of the losses were to upper division teams in overtime. Nevertheless, the squad did finish runner-up in the Middle Atlantic Con- ference. In a re-match of the 1981 finals, Franklin and Marshall again was able to edge the Lady Bullets. With only seven seniors on the 37 player team, leadership proved to be extremely important, and co-captains Leslie Murray and Lisa Woodland provided a lot for the underclassmen. The Bullet defense, anchored by seniors Carol Daly, Murray and Woodland, proved to be formidable all season long. Also, goalie Lisa DeBanico had a fine year in the cage, including a 38 save performance in a 10 double- overtime loss to Ursinus. Finally, a key figure in this yearls campaign was assistant coach Vicki Carver, who provided a welcome abundance of enthusiasm and drive to the players. u, .. , l .mt u .a-wwsz-w A m, m . aspo- Minnow .. l - Pam Yerkes and Diane Schwarz. 2 - VARSI- TY 3 ROW 1: L. In recording a 7-3 record, the players pro- vided fans with the best season here since 1969. One highlight of the campaign was a 28-18 victory over arch-rival Franklin and Marshall. However, the ultimate high point of the entire season occurred in front of a small, long-weekend On that day, the Bullets pulled out a last- minute victory over undefeated Widener University, the defending National champions. Key to this and other successes were the fifteen seniors on the team as they provided the underclassmen with strong leadership. Individually, seniors Rich Sadlock and Joe Seygal both received the following honors: lst team All-MAC, lst team All-ECAC, Honorable Mention All-American. 37 1 - Kelli Schaefer and Dina Sammer. 2 Marcy Vaughan, Denise Babinchak, and Maggie Commins. 3 - Marcy Vaughan, Denise Babinchak, Dina Sammer, and Linda McGann. 4 - Maggie Commins and Denise Babinchak. 5 ROW 1: K. In the four tournaments entered during the year, the squad finished with one of the top places each time. First year Head Coach Colette Albertson had her work cut out for her as there were only two returning starters. However, these veterans, Denise Babin- chak and Marcy Vaughan, provided the leadership required on an inexperienced squad. The hard work exhibited by all the players paid off as the women were able to rise to most challenges. Key matches included a victory over Division I Towson to gain a semi-final berth at the York Tournament. Also, the teamts tough play enabled them to garner third place in the MACS behind two nationally ranked teams. Team Produces F our 5 . igwm.m.mumwmswfwwheaz 1W Q IL: The 1982 Gettysburg College soccer team finished the sea- son with a 6-8-1 record. Under third year Head Coach Larry Zelenz3 guidance, the squad recorded shutouts over Millers- ville, Albright, Lebanon Valley, and Muhlenberg. One key to this accomplishment was senior co-Captain Scott Owens who, at the goalie position, recorded 132 saves while yielding only 33 goals. Heading the attack were freshman Joe Johnson with eight goals and senior Clay Pokorny with seven goals and one assist. Co-captain George Hagerman also played an important role throughout the season as a team leader. Although the team is losing five seniors this year, the experience gained this season should help the team to a successful 383 campaign. 1 - Scott Owens. F. i F i i . .w' .wuf: ..11511- The 1982 women,s cross-country team, led by All-American Martha Orem, finished with a winning record of 5-4. The small team, which was dominated by freshmen, consistently proved their strength and com- petitive spirit throughout the season. This was well exemplified at the MAC. Cham- pionships where the Lady Bullets surprised everyone with a fourth place finish out of seventeen teams. Orem, a junior, later added another highlight to the cross country season by finishing a respectable ninth in the East- ern Championships. This feat was accom- plished despite nagging injuries towards the end of the season. With the return of the youthful squad next year, Coach Lehris womenis cross-country team should prove to be a strong contender for the 1983 MAC. crownf 42 W 1 e WOMEN'S SQUAD e- ROW 1: B. Wheeler. A. The menls cross-country team, which boasted a large number of freshmen, com- piled an admirable 12-3 record for 1982. Not only did the runners achieve great success against strong Division III teams, they also held their own against Division I power Rider College and Division II con- tender Mt. St. Marys. Senior Dave Wie- checki played an important role on the team as he added needed experience to the young squad. Other key runners included freshman sensations Thom Clark, Pete Dominick, and Bruce Welch who all swept a number of races. All these ath- letes helped the team to a decisive victory over arch-rival Franklin and Marshall, the highlight of the dual meet season. As the younger members of Coach Lehrls cross-country team begin to compile more competitive experience, they should de- velop into one of the Eastls top small col- lege squads. 43 45 48 1 iL r1 XK .NVN. mm m . b m. m n iwunmmdxi $i,xlCHllly nklf$y; KmVVZ XX AF 4 x u . $ - Xx ' lm R. Records Broken In Banner Season The 1982-1983 women's basketball team, headed by second-year coach Kay Higgins, achieved a record-breaking 15-6 record. This first winning season in the last ten years at Gettysburg was achieved with on1y nine players on the team. Nevertheless, the fifteen victories set an all-time school record and enabled the year to capture its second straight MAC southwest title. Also, for the first time in the school's history, the squad advanced past the first round of the MAC playoffs with a hard-fought victory over Albright. Unfortunately, the ladies lost the overall Southern division crown to a strong Widener squad. The women1s basketball team also set a record this year in team scoring average 00.61 and Sue Marshall broke the single game scoring mark with 30 points against Western Maryland. Further- more. the team finished 14th in the nation in average margin ofvictory 04.6t and opponents field goal percentage L3561, as well as 15th in rebounding 65.71. Leading the team to these accomplishments were captain Kari Williams, Denise Babinchak. and ail-conference players Sue Marshall and Martha Cave. All four averaged over ten points a game. Also, Karen Tessmer, the MVP of the Messiah Tournament, led the team with 73 assists. 86 1 - 1 Lisa Embon. 2 Karen Tessmer. 3 -- Barb Taylor. 4 - Denise Babinchak. Buck Shines In Tough Season x Gettysburgis menls basketball team, despite aggressive play at both ends, finished l with a 7-14 record. Among other reasons for this outcome were injuries to key players, including 6i7ll sophomore Joe Lynch, which hampered the teams efforts throughout the campaign. Nevertheless, players like Scott Weiermiller, Chip Graber, and Steve Buck did provide excitement for the fans. Buck, a junior, led the team in almost every statistical category including points t333l and field goal percentage 64929. Also, his 10.4 rebounds per game proved to be the highest in the league. Weiermiller, the teams key guard, showed his passing prowess in recording a club high 32 assists. As a team, highlights included a second place finish in the Gettysburg Lions Club tournament. With the return of all the key players and successful recruiting by Coach Bob Lehr, the l Bullet Basketball fortunes should be on the upswing in the future. ', 'v4v,.n -.w t: 1 - VARSITY ROW 1: M. Third In MAC With a lot of hard work and good all-around leadership from captains Kevin Eidenshink and Bob Curran, Gettysburg1s wres- tling team enjoyed a 10-5 dual meet season. Headed by fifth year coach Bill Miller, the Bullets finished second at both the Washington and Lee Invitational and the Juniata Invitational tournaments. Also highlighting the season was a third place finish out of 22 teams at the MAC championships. At that conference meet, Jay Delduco t1181,JeffMiller 0501, Charlie Martin 0771, and Glenn Faust tunlJ all captured third places. Gettysburgts best finish was by Kevin Eidenshink, who finished second at 158 and qualified for nationals for the second year in a row. During the regular season, Bob Curran registered a 16-3 slate to lead the team in wins. Although the team is losing four seniors who accounted for 34 individual wins this year, a strong group of underclassmen has Coach Miller extremely optimistic for the 1983-1984 season. Key to achiev- ing this and other goals was the team depth and spirit exhibit- ed by the swimmers throughout the season. At that meet, the squad showed its dominance as they defeated 2nd place Johns Hopkins by 46 points. Competing at Dickinson Col- lege, the Lady Bulletst performances included one first place and six seconds. The 400 medley relay team of Dot and Jamie Berrier, Irene Curren, and Clare Dunkle captured the top place as well as qualifying for Nationals. Jamie Berrier, Dunkle, and senior Beth Hetley also went to nationals in individual events. At the NCAA championships at Ohiots Kenyon College, the competition was markedly more diffi- cult and our top finish was 16th place by the relay team. During the regular season, school records were established in the 400 medley relay and by Dunkle in the 50 backstroke. Also, Jamie Berrier had a phenomenal season as she broke school records in the 100 IM, 200 IM, 50 breast, 100 breast, and 200 breaststroke. 91 Freestyle Relay Gains All- American Status The menls swimming team, coached by George Ken- nedy, finished with a successful 7-4 season. Also, the squad placed third out of thirteen teams at the MAC championship meet. The top point scorers included sen- ior co-captains Raul Marin and Bob Wheeler, Bill Var- ian, Ben Gill, and Tom McCurdy. At the conference championship meet, the freestyle relay team of Joe Lynch, Raul Marin, Paul Treumuth, and Tom McCurdy captured the title to help the Gettysburg effort. Also, McCurdy placed first in the 100 yard freestyle in 47.8 seconds. In National Division 111 com- petition, the MAC champion freestyle relay team fin- ished eighth, thus earning All-American status. Joe Lynch and Bill Varian also set school records in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke respectively. Other record-breaking performances were seen at the confer- ence meet at Ben Gill 000 and 200 butterflyl, Bill Varian t200 backstrokel, Tom McCurdy t200 frees- tylel, and Varian, John Schiller, Gill, and McCurdy t400 medley relayl all set new marks. Both the menis and womenis college bowling teams made strong showings within their conference this year, thus marking a vast improvement over the previous yearis performance. The womenis team placed third behind the University of Maryland and Shippensburg. Captain Maria Caracciolo, the teams high scorer, helped counteract the inexperi- ence of the starting five. The menis team, led by captain Kirk OiConnell, Joe Haskins, and seniors John Lehman, Ron Sorozan, and Brian Friedrich, captured their conference title. However, most of the defeats were at the hands ofupper division schools includ- ing Ursinus and Lafayette. Because Gettysburg and F and M defeated all their other MAC opponents, their contest became the championship game. Unfortunately, F and M pulled out a close 7-4 win to capture the title once again. That loss loss marked the first of four losses in a row. However, a strong 9-7 win over Bucknell ended the skid for the Lady Bullets. Leading the attack for Gettysburg were Martha Cave, Amanda Corroon, and co-captain Mary Schowalter. Cavels 44 goals and 47 total points were school records, breaking the old marks of 33 and 36 respectively. Corroon t23l and Schowalter US also hit double figures in scoring. Defensively, co-captain Kari Williams and seniors Carol Daly, Lisa Woodland, and Pam Yerkes were the core that held opponents to only 8 goals a game. Goalie Lisa DeBanico, in her rookie lacrosse season, registered 102 saves for Gettysburg. With the return of a strong group of underclassmen, the team should again be a strong contender for the MAC title next year. l VARSITY - ROW 1: P. Yerkes, C. Daly, L. Woodland, L. Murray, L. Coach Joe Donolli1s 12th season as Gettysburg1s head lacrosse coach proved to be a banner year. Not only did the team finish with a successful 11-5 record, but they also carried off the Middle Atlantic Conference championship. After ending the Southwest division in a three-way tie with Western Maryland and F and M, Gettysburg went on to defeat Swarthmore 16-6 in the title game. Leading the team were senior attack- men Neill Mitchell and Chris Boehcke, who both had record-breaking seasons. Mitchell broke school records for goals, assists, and points in a season, and career goals. He also tied Boehmcke for the career points record. Boehmcke also set a school mark with l 14 career assists. These two players finished as the entire MACS two top scorers, Several players garnered post-season honors on this championship team. Mitchell was voted the MVP 0f the Middle Atlantic Conference and Boehmcke, Jamie Conway tmidfieldy and Nick Kelly tdefense1 were selected to the All-Conference team. Gettysburgls softball team had the finest season ever in its short history with a phenomenal 18-1 record. Unfortunately, the single setback, a 2-1 loss to Western Maryland, kept the squad out of all post-season play. This was due to the fact that only the four divisional champions of the MAC were eligible for playoffs. Despite this misfortune, the incredible record as well as individual performances provided highlights for Coach Higgins and her players. Sophomore pitcher Judy Langan posted an 11-0 record and an incredible .064 ERA. Senior Kyle Reid led the team in batting average L4041 and runs scored 091 as well as being a perfect 6 for 6 in stolen bases. Also, senior catcher Dawn Robinson registered no errors in 87 fielding opportunities. The performances of all these players earned them all-conference honors. As a team, the Lady Bullets stole 30 or 33 bases and scored 1 17 runs as compared to 33 for the opposition. When one considers that softball at Gettysburg is only three years old and the team has already become one of the most dominating squads in the region, it is evident that future success and championships should become the norm for years to come. Gettysburg2s baseball team, coached by Eugene Hummell, struggled to a 5-16 record. Nevertheless, several individual per- formances highlighted the season. Senior Scott Smith, an out- fielder, posted a .423 batting average to capture the overall title. His two home runs, fifteen runs-batted-in, and thirty hits were also team highs. Senior Mike Ercole, the first baseman, led the squad in runs QOL extra-base hits 00L and bases-on-balls 04y Defensively, Ercole2s .970 fielding average edged senior catcher Matt Harris L963 for the team high. Senior Bill Pyron led all pitchers with a 3-2 record and a 2.92 ERA. With seven- teen underclassmen returning, the team should look forward to more success in the future. 128 Baseball Encounters Tough Competition VARSITY TEAM PICTURE ROW 1: Pete Neal, Jose Yanes, Jack Mangiante, Dennis Maloney, Dave Neugebaucr, Jim Kelley, Kelley, Kevin Silva. Along with that perfect mark, the players also captured the Middle Atlantic Conference championship for the second year in a row. In the title match, Gettysburg took on arch-rival Franklin and Marshall and pulled out a narrow 5-4 victory. All these accom- plishments led to a bonus for the already successful year as the team was selected to represent the East in the NCAA Division III championships in Claremont, California. When competing against the nations best, Gettysburg placed a respectable sixth. Leading the team was senior Cindy Prendergast who posted an unblemished 1 1-0 record at first singles. This perfection was achieved despite her having undergone back surgery less than a year ago. Senior Jenny Sheehan also recorded a perfect 11-0 record at sixth singles. The teams other senior singles player, Cindy Cross, was also extremely successful with a 9-2 record at second singles. Another top singles performance came from junior Pam Gray who was 10-1 at third singles. In doubles, Sheehan and freshman Katy Page also recorded a perfect 9-0 slate, including the deciding victory in the title match against F and M. Despite the graduation of four seniors, Gettysburgls womenls tennis team, with its strong underclassmen, should continue its winning ways in the future. 130 Cindy Cross ??2 Singles: 9-2 Pam Gray 7113 Singles: 10-1 N1 Undefeated MAC C hamps Katy Page 11M Singles: 8-3 Barb Knisely :- f5 Singles: 8-3 DOUBLES 7H - Prendergast-Cross: 10-1 749 - Gray-Griffith: 7-1 $42 - Gray-Knisely: 2-1 7143 - Page-Sheehan: 9-0 Jenny Sheehan 7143 - Page-Knisely: 1-0 1146 Slngles: 11'0 7143 - Page-Hooper: 1-0 131 It was a tough season for the Gettysburg menis tennis team which completed the year with a 4-8 record.
