In October, the worst air tragedy in U.S. aviation history oecured over San Diego when a Pacific South West Airlines, Boeing 727 jetliner collided with a small aircraft, resulting in over 150 deaths. Conllicts within Rhodesia arose when unfavored candidate Pieter W. Botha succeeded retiring John Vorster as Prime Minister of South Africa after a necessary ballot vote by the National Party, the first in over 30 years. Sadat and Begin were chosen as the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. At the end of the month, a fishing boat of Vietnamese fleeing their homeland but not granted landing at Pulau Bidong, an island off the east coast of Malaysia, capsized after hitting a sand bar. resulting in over 200 deaths and bringing attention to the plight of these seaborne refugees trying to escape Vietnam but unwanted by neighboring countries. Polands Karol Wojtyla became the first non-ltalian Pope since 1552, naming himself Pope t John Paul II and succeeding John Paul I who died after serving only 33 days as the Pope. t As the month of November began, Congressman Leo Ryan and four other members in his l party visiting the People's Temple cult in Ionestown, Guyana were ambushed as they were leaving. A twhite nightll of suicide followed as 913 members of this California-based cult died after drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid under the instruction of leader Iim Jones. As the New Year began, the US. officially established diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China tCommunist Chinal, thus straining relations with Taiwan. Guadeloupe was the scene of summit talks between President Carter, French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, British Prime Minister Iames Callaghan, and West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt as they informally discussed the world situation, especially the Westls changing relationship with Moscow and Peking. In February, a Presidential Pardon by President Carter freed Patty Hearst from prison, five months before she was eligible for parole. President Carter also met with President Jose Lopez Portillo in Mexico to further terms of friendship between the two neighboring countries. March saw the signing of peace agreements between Israel and Egypt under the influence of Begin and Sadat. An accident on March 28th at a nuclear plant in Middletown, PA brought international concern for nuclear power as a source of energy and the problems and effects encountered in its use. As the school year came to a close, President Carter lifted price controls on gasoline prices. resulting in rapidly rising gas prices. and urged more conservative usage. When the upperclassmen returned to the 'Burg in September, they were surprised to find total renovations of both Stevens and Huber Halls, home for many of the women when they were freshmen. Furthermore, maintenance and custodial operations were turned over to the Servomation Corporation on August 1. This resulted in mixed feelings on behalf of the campus community. Gettysburg Colleges Sesqui-Centennial Class of 1982 was welcomed in the fall, thus beginning plans for celebration by a 23-member Steering Committee, chaired by Professor David Crowner. The 1978-79 Senior Scholars Seminar set out to examine the topic ttComputers and Human Commu- nication: Problems and Prospects with twelve leaders in the field as guest speakers. The Recycling Club was formed as a result of concern for waste on campus. Its major efforts were the recycling of paper and aluminum cans. Chai, a social culture awareness group for Jewish and other interested students, was established on campus to discuss common interests and problems of being a campus minority. BSU and the Committee on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Students, in cooperation with the Central Pennsylvania Consortium, sponsored a workshop concerning the issue of minority students on predominantly white campuses. The key speaker was Dr. Reginald Pearrnan, educator specialist 0f the U.S. Bureau of Higher and Continuing Education. Appointed for five-year terms as department chairmen were Dr. Chan L. The Emma G. Musselman Foundation donated $1.25 million to the library fund with the stipulation of naming it the Musselman Library7Learning Resources Center. The Stahley location site waschanged. This added to the yearslong controversy over the proposed location of the new library. The GROUP, an informal gathering of concerned students, faculty, and administration, dedicated themselves to making the campus aware that they are a community unified around the common purpose of thinking. This group of campus members was responsible for initiating the fall Convocation ceremony with Dr. Nevitt Sanford as the speaker. President Glassick appointed a student-faculty Energy Council to eliminate fuel and financial waste with this years major effort of putting automatic temperature controls in the dormitories. An early morning fire on December 22 caused extensive damage to the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house. The inhabitants were forced to move off campus until renovations were complete. Fourteen students raised $22,364.50 for the College's Annual Loyalty Fund during the First Annual Student Phonathon held on Ianuary 15, 16, 17, 18 and 22. Further controversy on the library issue erupted after a January announcement of the new site in Stine Lake. Over 400 students attended an organizational meeting to discuss the issue. For the first time since 1969, the Gettysburg College Football team finished with a .500 record. The gridders, under the leadership of first year mentor Barry Streeter, played with enthusiasm and vigor the entire year. The cheers given them, however, should not drown out those given to the other fall sports squads. The soccer team had its lirst winning slate in seventeen years; the field hockey team and volleyball squad also enjoyed fine seasons, as they posted records of 5-5- 2 and 8-4, respectively. In addition, the cross-country team blitzed all comers on its way to an MAC Championship. It is our hope, then, that these pages do justice to the efforts and accomplishments of all these athletes. Football For the first time in nine years, the Bullets ended their season with a .500 record tS-Si. Captains Rick Rubio and Dick Burke led the hardworking squad, as they took the squad through some hard times during the year, including a four game losing streak. The final game of the year, a 38-18 win over Iona, was also an excellent team effort, as it ended the Bullets' season on a high note. The spring of 1979 was no exception, as the various spring teams compiled a record of 56-36. As usual, the track team, headed by such stalwarts as pole vaulter Steve Iirgal tpictured abovei, led the way, though their 6-6 slate may not reflect it. Meanwhile, the women's lacrosse team won the Penn-Mar conference championship with their 6-3 mark. The tennis teams continued their winning ways, as the men's team finished 11-3Mand the women's squad 10-2. In addition, the golf team finished at 8-5, its seventh consecutive winning season. , This is not to say that the spring was not without its disappointments. The men's lacrosse team, after winning five of its first seven contests, dropped its last five to finish 5-7 - its first losing season in four years. The baseball team also had some late-season woes, as it saw its 9-4 record fall to 10-10. i On the surface, it does not appear that the track team had a particularly brilliant season, as their final record was but 6-6. However, theirs was a season marked by scintillating individual achievements. Bill Geating appeared in the NCAA Division III track and field championships by Virtue of his 3252.5 clocking in the 1500 meter run. He also won the MAC mile run. Javelin thrower John Murphy also excelled, as he consistently flirted with the 200-foot mark; his best toss was 20310 . Steve Iirgal missed topping 14 feet only twice during the dual meet season, and he also represented Gettysburg at the NCAA meet. And the list goes on. The mile relay team of fresh- man Don Reed, Tom Thurston, Iirn Sims, Mark Dot- tavio was second at MACS and went on the Nationals. Freshman distance runner Dave Miller also enjoyed a line year. Special accolades should be accorded to sprinter Matt McManness, who burst from obscurity to become the teams highest scorer behind Geating Sportsl 109 .m llWSpm'ts Row 1 U. to rJ: D. Miller, E. That winning slate enabled the Bullets to win both the Penn-Mar and Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Junior Julia Emmons led the scoring with 16 goals followed by Linda Luttrell, soph- omore, with 12, and juniors Beth Moretzsohn and Mary Ripple with 10 each. Row 1 U. to r3: 8. Fritz. L. Luttrell, D. Scott Mar- tin led the team in scoring with 39 total points t22 goals and 17 assistsi. Fellow attackman Pete Goodall turned in his second consecutive solid season, as he tallied 32 points. Goaltender Bob Yokem- ick also had a brilliant year, as he turned back 69 percent of the shots he faced. His career total of 547 saves is second only to the Gettysburg record of 677, set by Doug Master between 1972 and 1975. Lastly, Coach Ioe Donolli was honored by being named assistant coach to the south team in the annual North-South All-Star game. The five consecutive losses that ended the teams season were a bitter pill to swallow. Another sour note was the con- tinued bout with cancer of tri-captain Bob Ehlinger, who was forced to miss the teams final game because of hospital treatment. 1147Sports Row 1 U. to rJ: F. Hecker. B. Almost as im- pressive as Anderson and Kaloudis was freshman Nancy Loh, who went unde- feated in singles competition mm. In addition, the doubles combination of Brynn Ely and Cathy Cramer was 9-0. Possibly the only disappointment this team faced was the end of its 22 match- win streak, which F. and M. snapped. Once again the members of the class of 1979 are beginning anew. Today we celebrate the festival of Pentecost commemorating a time of new beginnings for Christ's disciples and the begin- ning of the Christian Church. The banner for this festival day represents the Holy Spirit's de- scent upon us. May God bless and guide us as we go our sepa- rate ways bearing the fruits of His spirit and the seeds of wis- dom which were sown in these four years. -Sunday, June 3, 1979 C0mmencemenU253 MI'. and Mrs. Ulysses W.
