JPECCEWQUJm W97 GETTYSBURG COLLEGE GETTYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA In September of 1977 A new class set forth upon this campus. G mw BE SL YL mm G .rrIkIv 1:! 51.1! ill :5! .IPQI luv ft, 1!; IVL' drill III, Now we are engaged in the college experience- Testing whether we can maintain an equal balance Between all-nighters and all-campuses. 8; la It is my privilege, as the new president of Gettysburg College, to be a part of they llnew beginningsll theme of the 1978 yearbook. Even though each academic year of- fers the campus community the opportunity for a new beginning, there is always the chance newness will run second to routine. Thus, I was pleased when the editor of ; the SPECTRUM told me that her staff planned to emphasize the word llnew in their 8 theme. Gettysburg College is, indeed, experiencing a new beginning that will in four short I. years, include the celebration of its 150th anniversary. The students who enter in the Fall of 1978 will make up the sesquicentennial class of 1982. The Class of 182 and the classes that follow will benefit from the newness that started in the Fall of 1977 and continued throughout the school year. The innovative Senior Scholarsl Seminar will have grown in stature from a yearls experience; the 6700 computer will have been tuned up to be useful in nearly all areas of the academic program; the special writing skills program designed to give students an added plus in handling their undergrad- uate studies will be in full operation; the new Libraerearning Resources Center will be a step closer to reality; and the general reviltalization of academic, social and , spiritual life on campus will be well underway. 9 I congratulate all who participated in Hnew beginnings? and invite everyone as- sociated with Gettysburg College to keep this newness ever a part of this great institu- tionls future. 1 o WKW 5 Charles E. Some of the more memorable moments were Kings Point, where the defense was out- standing, and the Washington and Lee game, which repre- sents the teams best overall effort. Although the team, captained by juniors Dan Frascella and Bob Rudisill, lost in the playoffs to Widener, they performed quite well. The team provided a thrilling and exciting season for its spectators. One reason for this ex- citement was caused by freshman, Bill North, who was named high scorer because he averaged 15.7 points per game. Seniors Barry Wright and Craig Shonvaker will be leaving the Bullets. However, with such returning starters as J 0e Mesmer, Larry Smith, Dan Frascella, Bob Rudisill, and Bill North, head coach, Dave Rahn, and the Bullets should enjoy another successful season next year. . f l, f v . All the members of the team worked hard for Gettys- burgts winning season: backstrokers, Kathy Keers, Beth Erickson, Linda Brown, Marguerite Klein, Liz Hanna; butterflyers, Marion Holmes and Shirley Geerling; freestylers Cherie Estelew, Jane Holmes and Beth Phillips; breastrokers, Carin Olsky and Carolyn Latshaw; and diver, Jan Griffin. The Bullets sent four girls to NationaPs in March, including: Marion Holmes, Jean Shaw, Liz Hanna, and Carin Olsky. Hard work outs, determination as well as team unity created an outstanding Gettysburg swim team. 1 Splashing season 155 In the best season since Coach Rost has been here, the Men's Swim Team boasted a 9-5 record. The team again won the ttLittle Three Meet, personifying the motto ttQuality not Quantityll; each team member swam hard to overcome'the lack of depth. It was a growth year for the team, but a strong nucleus in the team promises to be even stronger next year. Captain Dave Speier, the only senior, will be missed, but the team will be looking forward to the return of many fine swim- mers. For instance, Jeff Cuddeback, who was Gettysburgts first All American in swimming, will be back next year. This seasonls performance showed that team unity is important for overall improvement and success. Widener was first with 115. Jim Martino received the con- ference,s outstanding athlete as presented by the MAC coaches. During the championships, Gettys- burg took 5 first places. They included: Bill Geating in the mile run, with a school and MAC record time of 4:11.01; Jim Martino, 440 yard dash, 48.27; Jim Martino, 220 yard dash, 21.87; Steve Jirgal, pole vault, 14-6; and the mile relay team of Mar- tino, Dale Luy, Thurston and Dottavio which turned in a 3:17.25. The woments tennis team delivered Gettysburg College its first undefeated season in years. Coached by Carolyn Schlie, the women continued their winning streak by taking the Penh-Mar Conference, and tying for first place in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Excellent playing from such players as Junior, Kerry Kaloudis t8-3 recordh Sophomore, Sue Anderson 00-1 record; 2nd in MACE; and Senior, Laura De Corso 01-1 recordt helped the team. However, excellent overall depth was the key to their perfect season. In the upcoming year, the team will lose three seniors: Laura De Corso, Leslie Keating, and Dee Young. Captained by seniors, Ed Crowe, Mike Barnes, and Craig Sabatino, and coached by Joe Donalli, the team was sparked by a number of excellent freshmen and sophomore at- tack players who will return next year. While losing tough matches to teams such as F 8: M, Delaware, and Bucknell, the Gettysburg squad overpowered such teams as Muhlenberg, Wilkes, Dickinson, Widener and Lafayette. Five seniors will be leaving the team this year: the three captains, Chris Re, and Al Danielson. However, it should be noted that this in- jury hex might be a blessing in disguise, as several younger players gained experience that they would not have gotten otherwise. In fact, only three seniors, Nancy Davis, Carol Weisberg, and leading scorer Krista Reichard, were among the starting eleven. Other standouts included Bucky Newsome, who rebounded from an off year as a junior to lead the squad in runs batted in, and John Mastovich, who topped the pitching staff in victories. It represents the students in formulating many College policies and works to promote cooperation among administration, faculty, and students. The Senate is composed of twenty members in total, four of which are officers. Twelve members are elected at large in March. Four are elected in September from within the freshman class. The majority of the work of the Senate is done in committee. The Academic Policy and Program Committee considers issues of academic concern to the college commun- ity. The Budget and Management Committee investigates and allocates funds to special projects on campus. During this year, the council met each Wednesday to discuss, plan, and coordinate the activities which they sponsored; this council provided a wide range of activities. Programs were organized for the exploration of personal values and relationships; such organizations were: BRIDGE, the Committees of Risk or COR, and the seminars on love, sex and marriage. The Council also served the campus through the arrangement of major lectures and films. The Council provided volunteer services to help the needy in the com- munity. Greater awareness of the messages of the Bible, especially the Gospel, were the result of weekly discussions sponsored by the Chapel Council, as well as informal Monday evening services, Wednesday evene ing communion services, and the Sunday morning service. Probably the highlight of this years experiences was a five day trip to the south tSouth Carolina, in cooperation with the sociology depart- ment. The intended purpose of this trip was ttto involve students in areas of social concern so that they can become sensitized to the social issues in America today. These diverse programs sponsored by the Chapel Council helped the students of Gettysburg College to become more active members of the Christian Community, and to grow as individuals. 203 5- x 01 lege Choir The College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Getz, toured Canada for their 12- day tour this year. In order to cele- brate this official transition in the administration and to recognize the wealth of opportunities at Gettysburg Col- lege, a week of special presentations proceeded the in- auguration ceremony. Inauguration week included a solo performance by the noted soprano, Phyllis Byrn Julson, and an illustrated lecture by the reknowed architect and designer of the colleges new Library Learning Center, Hugh Newell Jacobson. In addition, intuitive and in- formative lectures were given by Dr. James Pickering of the English department and by visiting speaker, Vivian Gordon of the University of Virginia. Another special pro- gram, ttA Liberal Arts Samplerb, featured presentations from the sixteen departments of the college. This pro- gram illustrated the diversity of programs which are available on campus and gave students as well as faculty an opportunity to gain an insight into their areas of select- ed interest. Also during this week, a Symposium on Professional Ethics provided students with a general knowledge of contemporary career principles. Other pro- grams exemplified musical talent and the musical creativ- ity of Gettysburgts students because special studio re- citals occurred during this week. This Inauguration Week was highlighted by the in- auguration ceremony. On April 15, 1978, in the presence of the College family and delegates from one hundred and eight sister colleges, the Chairperson of the Board of Trus- tees, Samuel A. Schrengaust, installed Dr. Glassick into his office on behalf of the administrative body at Gettys- burg. In the recognition of the colleges heritage, Dr. Ar- nold Hanson, the former president of this institution, pre- sented Dr. Glassick with a gold medallion linking seals of the college, the Lutheran Church, and the names of pre- vious college presidents. An address by the most Rever- end Doctors Howard J. McCarney as well as by Paul Mor- so served to illustrate the continuing importance of the Lutheran tradition at Gettysburg. The hour long cere- mony was highlighted by selections performed by the Gettysburg symphonic band, the College Choir, and the Chapel Choir. In his inaugural address, President Glassick reaffirmed his confidence in the principles of education at Gettys- burg. Dr. Glassick spoke with the marked insight and dedication that has thus far characterized his administra- tive term. In realization of the tt . . . difficulties tthati may lie ahead . . . tI, Dr. Glassick expressed his conviction that the college community possessed the resources to fule fill, W . . the goals that the founders laid down for us? He identified these Vital resources as being GettysburgIs pri- mary rather than secondary focus on the intellectual pro- cess, and the colleges efforts to instill in young minds the desire to pursue meaning in life through education. Dr. Glassick emphasized the importance of utilizing these re- sources for the purpose of maintaining the standards that have heretofore succeeded in the preparation of Get- tysburg College graduates for roles of leadership in so- ciety. Emphasizing the significance of an inspired educa- tion, Dr. Glassick compared the effect intellectual energy may have with the phenomenal effect resulting from the coalescence of cosmic forces. Through an analysis in- terpretation of Gettysburg College t2 . . as a spot on our globe where a variety of forces are combining and coalesc- ing to produce the next centuryts leadershiptt, Dr. Glas- sick simultaneously centralized and universalized the con- cept of education. During this entire week of ceremony, the community was given the opportunity to witness and t0 commeme orate the accomplishments of the institution of which President Charles E. Glassick is now so intricately a part. a uWe are graced with the presence of a new leader who has great expectations for our future. .
