Shortly after the War, the College purchased much of the block on which Stevens hall is located. Completed in 1868, it was named in honor of Thad- 3 I deus Stevens who had died ; earlier that year. the foundation stone, and students helping in its construction. Located to the west of Pennsylvania Hall, it was demolished in the.-1940's. In 1848 and 1849, Thaddeus Stevens sold two additional plots of land to the north and south of the original lot. The campus had now doubled its size, extending roughly from the Freshman Quad area to the Tiber Creek. The President's House tthe White House was completed in 1860. Today housing the Political Science Department, the building has served as the residence of presi- dents and College chaplains. On July 3, 1863, the College found itself in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg. After the War, the Federal Government reimbursed

The building of Glatfelter Hall was a major challenge to the domi- nance of Pennsylvania Hall. Brua Chapel was also built at this time, con- struction having been made possible by a $15,000 donation from Lieutenant Colonel William P. Brua. It was erected in honor of his parents. Another major addition to the College was the construction of Mc- Knight Hall in 1899. This building was originally a dormitory and apparently at- tracted students who otherwise would have . , V i .
