Soon afterward, it was de- cided that a preparatory school was needed to better educate seminary students. Resulting from this, the Seminary made the necessary arrange- ments for the opening of a new college, and on April 7, 1832, Governor Wolf signed the charter of Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg. With the meeting of the Board of Trustees on July 4, the new school we now know as Gettysburg Col- lege was formally organized. The first day of classes began on Wednesday morn- ing, November 7 at the gymnasium located on the corner of South Washington and High Streets. Pennsylvania College continued to operate in this building for its first five years: Today, this building still stands and is a private residence. The Board of Trustees, seeing the need to expand the College, purchased six acres of land owned by Thaddeus Stevens. Today, this area is known as the Old Quad. q... Km :x'iEQuVr: 112k. .

A large, four-story building was constructed on this site. Designed in a neo- classical style, most of it was completed in the fall of 1837. At this time Pennsyl- vania College moved from the old Gymnasium to the new College Edifice. Later, this building came to be known as Pennsylvania Hall.
