JAM. 5.1 The Theological Seminary of Gettysburg received its first charter in 1826. Soon afterward, it was de- cided that a preparatory school was needed to better educate seminary students. Resulting from this, the Seminary made the necessary arrange- ments for the opening of a new college, and on April 7, 1832, Governor Wolf signed the charter of Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg. With the meeting of the Board of Trustees on July 4, the new school we now know as Gettysburg Col- lege was formally organized. The first day of classes began on Wednesday morn- ing, November 7 at the gymnasium located on the corner of South Washington and High Streets. Pennsylvania College continued to operate in this building for its first five years: Today, this building still stands and is a private residence. The Board of Trustees, seeing the need to expand the College, purchased six acres of land owned by Thaddeus Stevens. Today, this area is known as the Old Quad. q... Km :x'iEQuVr: 112k. . A large, four-story building was constructed on this site. Designed in a neo- classical style, most of it was completed in the fall of 1837. At this time Pennsyl- vania College moved from the old Gymnasium to the new College Edifice. Later, this building came to be known as Pennsylvania Hall. As the College expanded, a new building was needed for the College Preparatory Department. In 1844, the construction of Linnaean Hall was begun, with local farmers donating much of the foundation stone, and students helping in its construction. Located to the west of Pennsylvania Hall, it was demolished in the.-1940's. In 1848 and 1849, Thaddeus Stevens sold two additional plots of land to the north and south of the original lot. The campus had now doubled its size, extending roughly from the Freshman Quad area to the Tiber Creek. The President's House tthe White House was completed in 1860. Today housing the Political Science Department, the building has served as the residence of presi- dents and College chaplains. On July 3, 1863, the College found itself in the middle of the Battle of Gettysburg. Shortly after the War, the College purchased much of the block on which Stevens hall is located. Completed in 1868, it was named in honor of Thad- 3 I deus Stevens who had died ; earlier that year. The building 2 3L was used by the Preparatory Department. t xanaunu The 1880's saw additions of land to the west of campus, and the construction of a new Recita- 1 tion Hall, later to be called Glat- felter hall. Only the exterior of A v i L i 5 i L.-...:;?a..,.s-e-w....q.- . a . 4, Glatfelter Hall is original, as the interior was completely remodeled in the early part of this century. The building of Glatfelter Hall was a major challenge to the domi- nance of Pennsylvania Hall. Brua Chapel was also built at this time, con- struction having been made possible by a $15,000 donation from Lieutenant Colonel William P. Brua. It was erected in honor of his parents. Another major addition to the College was the construction of Mc- Knight Hall in 1899. This building was originally a dormitory and apparently at- tracted students who otherwise would have . , V i . Until 1897, Mum- masburg Road extended from Carlisle Street, through the pres- ent campus tbetween Weidensall and Breidenbaugh, through the southern corner of Rice HaID into the residential block be- tween West Lincoln and West Broadway. A local planner, Mar- tin Winter, urged the town to vacate most of Mummasburg Road, and extend North Wash- ington Street to the newly built West Lincoln and West Broad- way Streets. Harvey W. Mc- Knight, President of the College, supported this plan, and the College took advantage of the change and used the old Mum- In 1921, Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg had its name officially changed to Gettysburg College. This decade saw the tearing down of the old professor's cottage and the construction of the Library in its place. The old McCreary Lab standing to the east of Pennsyl- vania Hall was also demolished, and the YMCA Building ttoday called Weidensall HalD, Eddie Plank Gym- nasium and Breidenbaugh Hall were erected. ,4. . ,. ..,--..4,,v af... ., z! i .URE SURRENDERS; CHURCHILL URGES UNITY masburg Road area to build the Nixon Athletic Field. Stine Lake and the Freshman Quad are located in this area today and the faint out- lines of a track oval and baseball diamond can still be detected. By 1900, College development had leveled off, with no major expansion until the 1920's. At the turn of the century, the campus was bounded by Constitution Avenue, West Lincoln Avenue, Carlisle, Stevens and North Washington Streets. tmt-:.u.-.. 1,: t a . ywn Ih rilinh n, . a +.. The land along West Lincoln Street where the Dining Hall and Cottages are located was bought in the 1950's. The old Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity House stood where the Dining Hall parking lot is now. the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity owned the Dining Hall property prior to the timevthe College bought it. The outbreak of World War II brought another change to the face of the Gettysburg College campus. The male student population de- creased, and some fraternities became in- active. Large Quansit barracks were built for military training on both sides of West Lincoln Avenue where the College Union, Apple Hall and Bream Gymnasium now stand. The only major fire in a Gettysburg College building occurred on November 24, 1946, 1; when the Student Christian Association . .x.---h,-..-:-.. .... -..;....,s , WNMWQ3D55WM.5u5u-.n-v.eemv.-.44..x u ms. . .. . . The 1950's and 1960's were a time of great expansion for the College. Both Dormitory Quads were built to house the increasing number of students enrolled. Now Hanson Hall, the first dormitory to be built, stands on the site of the old observatorysthrist Chapel, the Student Union Building, Masters Hall and Bream Gymnasium were also built during this time. The land on which Musselman Stadium now stands was owned by a brick factory, and was purchased along with the Quarry in 1961. The West Building, which houses ROTC at Gettysburg College, was a wire factory at the time it was purchased. The most recent building project was McCreary Hall, which was completed in 1969. jl. This provided for the improvement and expansion of the Biology, 50- ciology and Anthropology and Psy- chology Departments. The Hauser Field House was completed in 1973. The Meals property was purchased in 1963, which extended the campus to the northwest, out along Mummas- burg Road. The Meals House or Conference House, still exists and retains the name of its former owners. Looking forward to new expansion, the next addition to the Gettysburg College campus will be the proposed Librarwaesearch Learning Center. Part of the needed funds have already been raised, and the College is eagerly awaiting the start of construction. The completion of this new :building will mark a culmination of 150 years of growth by Gettysburg College. Gettysburg College Gettsyburg Pa. Editor-in-Chief: Advisor: Joseph G. Neidinger Willard G. Vannorsdall has been elected University Chaplain and Pastor of the . Church of Christ at Yale Uni- versity, New Haven, CT, ef- fective September 1, 1976. Rev. Vannorsdall will succeed the Rev. William Sloan Coffin Jr. In his new position at Yale,. Vannorsdall will serve as the pastor for the university com- munity, be the preacher for Battell Chapel on the Yale cam- pus, and facilitate the ministry of denominational chaplains assigned to the campus. Dur- ing his tenure at Gettysburg, Chaplain Vannorsdall has been instrumental in the creation of numerous meaningful pro- grams that have distinguished the religious life at Gettysburg College as a major source of vi- tality. He initiated the weekly corporate worship service and special mid-week services in Christ Chapel, and the llCom- munity of Risk, 3 program de- signed for students to grow in the understanding of their own religious tradition. He has provided impetus for the Chapel Council programs that include community service projects and tutorial services offered by volunteering stu- dents, a series of lectures and films brought to the campus, a faculty mid-winter retreat, and the love, sex and marriage seminars. Finding a replace- ment for Rev. Vannorsdall will be a very difficult task for the Gettysburg community. NT$?- f 9 -n-'x n Ham '1: ya... ' zm' j'.$. . mo. .
