Jum. .Jfrfv Dedication To the memory of Jean Landefeld Hanson and Kenneth L. Smoke, the yearbook staff humbly dedicates the 1971 Spectrum. Both Mrs. Hanson, beloved wife of President C. Arnold Hanson, and Dr. Smoke, chairman and professor of the Psychology Depart- ment, dedicated their lives to serving the needs of students at Gettys- burg College. Mrs. Hanson, our ttfirst ladytt for nine years, died De- cember 9, 1970. In September Dr. Smoke was honored by the College for his quarter century of service. On Gettysburgis campus, there are more married students than ever before. The Spectrum decided to take a closer look at those involved in this trend. We asked several of the married students what it is like to be married and in college. The combination of housekeeping and studies keeps them busy, but sharing the load makes it easier. stLife is generally easier all around? said one. ttWe get less hassle from the towns- people, for one thing. Somehow a wedding ring sort of appeases those who are put otT by long hair or bellbot- toms. By the same token, we feel more a part Of the town, because this is our home, at least for a while? Relationships between the couples themselves. and with their friends, are more comfortable. Independence from parents is basically considered an advantage, although for some it did increase certain financial demands. In general, the couples seemed to be enjoying a stunique ex- perience in togetherness? 14 Anne and Jack Baittinger 15 Mary and Roger Bromley 16 Polly and Chuck Gilbert - XL Betsy and Bruce Stefany 17 l8 f Biologu I x n. 19 20 21 22 23 24 u. .. hum . Between the professor and the student there is established a peculiar obligatory relationship which requires the student to attend class, perform on tests and research papers and which requires the profes- sor to formulate some kind of opinion of the academic abilities of that particular student. For most college students the relationship between a professor and the student rarely goes beyond this point. Students know little more about a professor other than how to spell his last name. The student often has little opportunity to find out about the professorethe way the professor or administrator feels about college policy, what prompted the professor to become a pro- fessor, or what changes the professor feels should be made in the educational facets of the college. In the following pages, we have attempted to present statements by professors and administrators which express an attitude or idea of these individuals. These attitudes and ideas lend insight into the minds of the people entrusted with our education. Our purpose in doing this is to give the students a further opportunity to become more closely acquainted with the greatest asset of the college, its faculty. 50 51 The Spectrum for 1971 is a record of one year at Gettysburg. In pictures, captions, and i texts, personalities and events are presented to form a panoramic view of a year of collegiate life. Within this perspective each Gettysburgian can locate himself and attach his meaning to this year. It is very likely that for each one of us the summing up of this year will result in a mixture of sentiment and humor, failure and accomplishment, and a range of personal involvement and association. The obvious unifying thread which runs through all of this gathering of meaning is a common attachment to this College. As the years go by, this common thread tends to become a bond of remarkable significance. The 1971 Spectrum, therefore, is a means of now reviewing a single year of a process of obviously greater dimensions in both time and events. In the future this same Spectrum will provide a means of gauging the significance of 1970-1971 in the larger continuum of life and growth. It is that-but it is also a prospectus and a beginning point for an endeavor which continues for each of us. QM Aiex Rowland, Chemistry 53 William F. Railing, Economics and Business Administration Howard C. Parks. Classics 54 David R. Quinn, Romance Languages 56 Richard T. Mara and Thomas J. Hendrickson, Plzl'sics Gertrude Gobbel, Psychology Henry Schneider 111, German 58 Chester E. Jarvis, Political Science Norman E. Richardson, PhilOSOphjr' stln order to understand todayls world and its inhabitants we need to ask ques- tions about quality as well as questions about quantity. We need to search for answers to questions about value, of di- rection, of priority, and of reality. Not to try to do so is to abandon ourselves to the mercies of whatever powers come along. To try to do so involves a major change in both the content and the methods of our teaching. Questions such as these are being raised all around us today, and their connections with the current content of our liberal arts need to be raised and explored at length. And, in order to do this, different methods of teaching will need to be developed- methods more along the lines of the dia- logue in which each person plays an ac- tive role essential for both himself and for the others of the group. Then, perhaps, we will be able to re- open those wider dimensions of manls mind: tragedy, comedy, and worship. and in so doing to relearn once again how to weep. to laugh, and to pray. Then, hopefully, we can come to know that inner confidence from which comes outer strength. tt1 think some students-here and every- where else-have been using the charge of irrelevance of many college courses or college education in general as a rationalization for not studying or for dropping out. Admittedly. it may be dimcult for a student in every case to see the relationship of the part to the whole, especially when the purpose of that whole-the college experience-is t0 contrib- ute toward the formation of a whole human being; and it in true that we live in a time of tension, frustration, and manifold dis- tractions. Perhaps our present circumstances constitute one of the best arguments for the worth of a college education. Contrary to some, I see it not as an escape but as training for survival? llMan has a trust to live within nature, not to dominate it. It is the right of all to enjoy fresh air, the fragrance of a wild rose, the beauty of a spring wild hower, the song of the meadow lark. We need to continually question bigger airplanes, faster cars, more etiicient detergents and what they will do to other forms of life, not just what they will do for man. It will mean some sacrifices but the result may then be a fulfillment of a mans trust in nature, even leaving it biologically a better place than when he found it? Richard B. Geyer, English Neil W. Beach, Biology 62 Toini Heikkinen, Music ltComposers of music have personal secrets re- lated to the inspirational sources and the inner, actual meanings of their various works. Most of- ten they prefer not to reveal these meanings but prefer to let music speak for itself. In rare in- stances, however, some have disclosed the mean- ing behind their works. In a disclosure to Bengt von Tome, Jean Sibelius related taking a walk in the afternoon of a day in late autumn. What he saw during his walk became the basic idea behind a certain Andante movement. Sibelius was con- vinced that a melody must be impregnated by an idea before it can have meaning. We ask: Is this not true of all music in order to have meaning? What realities of creation music has expressed throughout the yearslll 63 John H. Loose, Religion IIAs many of you present here this evening may already know, sometimes I am referred to as an llintellectual onanistf, That endearing nomencla- ture means that privately and publicly I practice the art of playing with myself, that is; with my mind. It also means that I find the art of in- tellectual onanism to be an inexhaustible source of sheer delight and enjoyment. Occasionally I even manage to interest a few students as well as a few of my colleagues in what may very well be an Iabnormall art, particularly if one considers the kind of atmosphere that exists in what we say is an institution of higher learning and to which we give the name Gettysburg College as a legal entity? 4f, mrrrrrrrrrrrw? 1. . v , J ,V l : , $5, Bruce W. Bugbee, History 64 itFor the Individual, immersion in the Liberal Arts should be a way of life. If he can combine in- telligent travel with curiosity and an appreciation of the Past, he may become a Citizen of the World who traverses space and time to be at home in all lands and Ages. He can also be at home with himself. Hopefully, he may join his imagination to what is most worth preserving to create new triumphs of the spirit? 65 N Mvv Ramsey W. Jones, Dean ofMen III donlt know that the co-educational dormitory system creates a closer relationship between stu- dents. I think the weakness of it lies in the possi- bility that all the same kind of people would want to live there and then you would have a very homogeneous group. To my mind, the worst thing in the world is a homogeneous group of people. I think there are a great many people who would want open dorms. Pm not too sure all of the alumni are in favor of it. Pm not too sure all of the people on the board of trustees are in favor of it. However, it hasntt been explained to them so that the word Itco-educationlI naturally scares them. I can see how it would work pretty well? 66 Scott M. Moorhead, Mathematics Itllm a realist. Ilve probably been more sensitive to the needs of students in the past years because I have now two children going to college. As I told both of them before they went to school, there,s going to be somebody on the faculty that they like, somebody with whom they can talk. If they,re in some kind of spot, academically or oth- erwise, therels somebody on the faculty to whom they can go, who will help them. We,re all sophis- ticated people. Welre supposedly mature. But sometimes Fm a child and so are the students here. We all need somebody to talk to. 1 hope to get the idea across to the students that I am here if the students need me. Sometimes you donlt know where to turn and it takes someone who has lived a little longer than you have to see how things work? Ruth Pavlantos, Classics IIAs graduation approaches, the senior some- times sighs and wishes he could have one more year. There are courses he would like to take, areas he would like to explore, or at least think about. His wish is about to be granted. His fifth year is the rest of his life. For the object of the liberal arts college should be to tipotentially edu- cated, and such an insatiable curiosity about eve- rything that the mere granting of a diploma will not stop the educational process. College must not be the mere stepping stone to business or the pro- fessions nor a useless frivolity. One college presi- dent said it should Ibe designed to furnish a man against the hundred erosions of mind and heart the years will try to give him? Ii 67 2;. Theodore Tannenbaum, Sociology III View myself no longer as a professional soci- ologist but rather as an Itoccupational sociologistd I use sociology as an aid in helping me solve my own problems, as well as looking at some of the problems of society and attempting to alleviate them by using the tools of sociology whatever these tools may be. My interest in sociology is primarily due to my religious interest. At one time I wanted to be a rabbi and save the world. Pm still influenced by sociology as a saving the world type of orienta- tion. I donit think it will save the world, but I think that one should try to do this in some way. Pm interested primarily in sociology as a problem solving discipline? :4 5- J udith Annis M odern Dance Norman Annis Art After fifteen years of adjusting to tracked plaster on her hoors and vacation plans which never materialized, my wife continues to show a remarkable congeniality toward the vagaries of my job. Whereas Judyis art is essentially tiuid and transient, mine is materially static and permanent. But we have found that the numerous similarities as well as the obvious differences which exist between dance and sculp- ture provide the substance for a continuing conservatism which for us, at least, has made life immeasurably more interesting. 69 What can you say about a Senate that died? . . . That it was ambitious and idealistic that it aimed to energize the students, making them aware of needed reform and then, leading them on to obtain that reform . . . that it was a Senate with high minded notions as to the potential power of a college government . . . and that, in the final reel, Senate ostensibly went down the tubes. Very few expected this to happen. In fact, the 1970-1971 Senate looked as if it would be the greatest and strongest Senate of the past four years. Since 1967, the power of Senate has steadily increased the moratorium the struggle for self-limiting hours for women the reform in the alcohol policy . . . the creation of the Residen- tial Life Commission as well as the placement of students on certain faculty committees. These ac- complishments were to a large extent the work of past Senates. With the administrative decision in Spring, 1970 to allow Senate the responsibility of the Student Chest, Senate appeared to finally have the power it had always needed to be an elTective student government. However, in late Spring, 1970, Senate found it- self confronted with a severe problem. In its crea- tion of the Res Life Commission, Senate dis- covered that it had divested itself of a great deal of power. In an effort to reclaim power, Senate voted to dissolve the Residential Life Commission. By so doing the Senate wielded itself a double blow by 11 rescinding a decision which had re- ceived the acclaim of students and faculty alike and 21 by attempting to dissolve a student and faculty commission which, unfortunately, the Sen- ate had insuHicient power to challenge. Thus when Senate reconvened in the Fall, 1970, it found itself in the laughable position of having created a lot of noise and no action. Student reac- tion to Senate at this time was below normal, in- dicating the trend of lacking interest in the Senate 72 which would continue until the end of the 19704971 Senate. When nominations for Senate officers were opened in February and only three students re- sponded, President Bob Baus decided that some- thing had to be done to alleviate the stgeneral feel- ing that there has been something wrong all year with the makeup and functioning of the Senate? Baus proposed to D dissolve Senate leaving the executive committee to deal with ltnecessitiesll; 21 dissolve Senate and establish a commission com- posed of volunteers to run student government; or 3 transfer power to the SUB Board providing the SUB Board would be willing to accept that re- sponsibility. The third proposal was chosen. How- ever, the SUB Board refused. Senate members were faced with remedying their problems them- selves. Things had to change and Senate changed them. Within a week after SUB Boardls refusal, Senate began to reorganize. Senate dropped the number of senators from 28 to 10, all of whom would be elected at large and responsible to all of the student body. In addition, the nomination for Senate oHicers was reopened. This time the re- sponse was much more enthusiastic. Senate. in conjunction with the Burgian, aimed to create as much interest in and knowledge of the candidate as possible. New balloting procedures were at- tempted in order to make certain that the 1971-1972 Senate would reflect the wishes of the majority of the students on campus. The result of the election was a noticeable in- crease in student interest in Senate and the hope that the new Senate will succeed. However. whether the Yacker Senate can survive the apathy and disinterest which drowned the Baus Senate remains to be seen. After all, apathy can kill any- thing, even a Senate that died and then came back. Bob Bulls. President Tom Lcrch. Wayne, Indiana, of good Irish stock, Patrick practiced law until the iidepressiof when he moved to Pasadena, California, and got started in the Pasadena Commu- nity Playhouse. This ustart led to parts in some 50 plays in three years. His acting was interrupted during World War II when he served three years in the Army Air Corps. In 1946 Patrick began his acting career in earnest, touring the United States in the Lindsay and Crouse play, State of the Union. Since then, he has appeared on Broadway in Crime and Punishment with John Ceilg ud, The Detective Story and Bus Stop, as well as many oE-Broadway and Lincoln Center appearances. On television, Patrick has appeared in Big Town, Boots and Saddles and Manhunt 215 well as guest roles in Studio One, Armstrong Circle Theatre, Hallmark Hall of Fame, Perry Mason, The Fugitive and Conflict. Members of the stage crew per- formed at will along with the cast. One man, Emile O Schmidt, was seen throwing his hair around at the con- clusion of each run through. This peculiar habit seems to be his, alone, and may distinguish him as the direc- tor, though our critic does not wish to commit himself. Brendan Behan, noted Irish drama- tist, has decided to write a play con- cerning the recent capture of a British soldier by the Irish Revolutionary Army in Dublin In a recuit interview Behan men- tioned that the play has been titled The Hostage. Complications arose when it was discovered Behan has been dead for several years. The death certificate listed the cause as excessive inebriation. CLASSIFIED Announcement: Ralph Cavaliere has been named this year's Mushroom and Blarney award winner. Director Schmidt British Soldier Nabbed As Hostage by Irate IRA DUBLIN-Fear of an uprising spread through the streets of Dublin today following the kidnapping of a young British soldier by the Irish Revolutionary Army The soldier, Leslie Alan Williams, was seized as a hostage in reprisal for the recent imprisonment of an IRA soldier in Belfast. The IRA soldier has been con- demned to hang. If the sentence is carried out Williams will face a firing squad, the kidnappers vowed. Adding complications to the tense situation was a statement by the Gov- ernment 0f Noxthem Ireland. We cannot find a reason for grant- ing a reprieve in the case of the con- demned youth, said a government spokesman. Williams is being held in a Dublin iiboarding house of somewhat shady reputation. The house is owned by someone called Monseweri' and oper- ated by two people known only as iiPat and 'iMegf' Several strange people have been seen frequenting the uboarding house, including two persons who, it is fearedt are either male impersonators or disguised members of the IRA. Boarders at the house include a convent girl, a soeial worker, three other women and their friends. iVilliams appears to be well taken care of but there is fear for his safety. Expected immediate developments will be covered by reporters at the SCCHC. Gettysburgis head trainer for some 44 years joined the ranks uf the retired this year end- ing a career during which more than 1.900 athletes passed through his training room. The ttDocii as he is referred to by those who know him began his career at Gettysburg in 1927 and rap- idly gained the reputation that he holds fur an almost uncanny and infallible ability to diagnosis what is wrong with a boy. I63 Rome has been a constant source of advice to nu- merous high school athletic departments in the area. He will be sorely missed but also fondly remembered. Gettysburg athletics this past year were the victim of few highpoints and even fewer winning teams. For some teams it was a year of rebuilding. for others it was the result of a lack of support and depth with many potential players failing to come out. On the gridiron the Bullets managed a 45 slate un- der Howie Shoemaker. a somewhat disappointing year folluwing last yearis impressive 7a2 record. The team was paced by senior Bill Albans who led the squad in pass receiving. pass interceptions. and scoring. Albans pulled in 29 passes for five touchdowns and inter- cepted five aerials. Senior eo-captain Mark Fifer running out of the fullback slot took rushing honors for the Bullets and set a new school record with I3! carries. A highpoint in the I970 season was the performance at quarterback Tim Brennan who completed 103 pas- ses breaking the former completitm record set by Herb Ruby in I967. In addition Brennan established another school mark with 321 offensive plays to his credit sur- passing the 308 set by Jim Ward in 1965. Three Gettysburg Bullet players were selected to play in the first annual Pennsylvania Dutch Bowl game. The three. all seniors. included Charlie Gerelus at offensive guard. Eric Sisco at defensive tackle. and Albans at defensive back. The Little Bullets although compiling a 2-3 record showed considerable talent especially in the form of Tom Groves and Bill Mayer. Groves. a quick. shifty Hanker and Mayer who handled the fullback slot should see considerable action on next yearis varsity. It was a disappointing year for cross country which finished with a 5-13 record. The team was paced by freshman Scott Lecrone with support by veteran Bill Sayre and Jim Stevenson. The Bullets finished last in the MAC university division and were hurt by the ab- sence ofseveral preseason hopefuls. The Bullet soccer season was highlighted by taking its last three games in a row with shutouts over Sus- quehanna. Dickinson. and Mt. St. Marys. Senior Bob McKee. a center forward took the lead scoring honors by a slim margin with four goals and four assists over Brian Wright who collected five goals and two assists. I65 Despite the fact that the Bullets were unable to bet- ter a 4-8-1 slate there is high hope for next year. With the return of sophomore Steve Hilmy who took third in the scoring column and freshmen Mike Shaver and Tim Nolan. the team should be able to produce a win- ning season. The Bullet cagers ended the season with a dismal 4-21 record. The only shining light throughout the sea- son was the performance ofjunior Jay Bucher who tal- lied for a respectable 495 points in the 25 game sea- son. He also turned in the best performance under the baskets in rebounding. Bucher averaged 19.8 points per game and was fol- lowed by teammate Rick Kershaw's 14.6. If the varsity had a somewhat disappointing season the freshmen team was indeed surprising. With a 10-5 slate the team was one of the finest to come along in several years. Jay Friedlander. a 5'10 sharpshooter emerged as the teams leading scorer. pouring in 227 points for a 15.1 average. He also registered the single game high with 33 points against Elizabethtown. The only player to better Friedlanderls mark was Perry Clark. Clark averaged 17.4 points per game playing in 11 out of the 15 contests. The three remaining starters on the team all aver- aged double figures during the season. They included Bob Matthews. John Gyulai and Bill Speier who also paced the team in rebounds. All should see action next year on the varsity squad. Swimming at Gettysburg this year was highlighted by the performance ofsenior eo-eaptain .lohn Fleming. Fleming. during his three varsity seasons with the Bul- let tankmen. placed tirst an astounding 60 times. In addition he holds the school records in the 50. 100. 200. and 500 yard freestyles: the 200-individual med- ley and swam anchor on both record setting relay teams. the 400-medley and the 400-11reestyle. Senior diver George Carlson ran second to Flem- ingls 125.5 points for the season with 94. In addition he' took 16 first places. Despite a 7-9 record the Bullet wrestlers were sparked by the performances of seniors Ron Emenhei- ser and Don Cramer. Emenheiser who was plagued by injuries throughout the season managed to pOst a 10-2 record. Cramer. working out of the l77-pound class. added his second 15-0 season in three years establishing a new school mark with 40 career victories ut Gettys- burg. Cramer. along with Jim Ridinger at I34 pounds gave the Bullets two MAC Championships. Cramer went on to the NCAA District ll tourna- ment where he captured a fifth spot and a berth at the NCAA Championships at Auburn. He was eliminated in that tourney with a second round decision. In addi- tion Cramer took the Frank Spring Gardner wres- tling award which is presented each year to Gettys- burgis outstanding senior wrestler. Gettysburg notched its third conference champion- ship of the last decade this spring as the Bullet golfers upset Lehigh University and defending champs. Amer- ican University. Sporting a 13-4 record the Bullets were paced by seniors Rich Krauss. Rich Green and Dick Roulette. The Bullet trackmen posted a 2-9 season. Most no- table during the season was the performance of fresh- men Tom Groves who set the school mark in the triple jump with a 44'9 try against Susquehanna. The Gettysburg varsity netmen also turned in a diasppointing performance this spring. Moving in this year from a 7-6 slate last year the team only managed to post a 3-H record. The team was comprised of sev- eral freshmen and sophomores including Bob Bair who held down the number one spot this year. With: a little more experience the team should do considerably bet- ter next year. $I..qu,.guuununans;p.ntuauaxann: nunanaguhn g.$ m. . 169 Gettysburgis lacrosse team. while not compiling an impressive won-Iost slate did show that it has the po- tential to develop into a solid team next year. Despite the loss of several seniors. most noticeably goalie Bob McKee and Art Kelly. the Bullets will have a seasoned squad of sophomores and juniors for next yearis season. The stickmen should post a considerably better record with seniors Joe Bruno. Dean Rudd. Dave Rochelle. and Tack Eddy and sophomores Al Tura- dizm and Mike Shaver providing the nucleus. The Gettysburg baseball team with only six letter- men returning was hard put this year unsuccessfully trying to maintain a .500 season. Despite the appear- ance of freshmen Bill Guard 0n the muund for the Bullets and senior Eric Williams. the Bullets were con- stantly the victims of hard hitting opponents. Heart- breaking losses to Lehigh and Navy by large margins did little to encourage the team. With substantial depth in the form of seasoned sophomores and juniors. next yeuris team should promise an improved performance. I71 I72 .- Nam .m;..u..-m-..--t.-----wvw .u-nommam.v- -wm 2H Aev ---n . Head Coach Fred Froelicher ONNNNONAWWUJVJI 186 Playing three games in total downpours and several others on fields in horrible condition, Get- tysburgis Varsity Field Hockey Team blew hot and cold. The team handled some opponents with ease, while against others they fought hard just to gain the upper hand. Then there were the losses. but never without an earnest, driving try to win. Defense, led by Timmie and Lo, with Nibs as goalie, was outstanding all year long; when noth- ing else worked, defense did in preserving several victories for the Burg. But a team wins on the number of goals it scores, and goals are usually scored by the forward line. At times. G-burgis for- ward line was really together, playing as a team. running straight through the opponent; at other times they were stifled with no way of putting things together. The high point of the season, however, was a wet seventeen minutes at Eliza- bethtown when. down 3-0. the entire team be- came unbeatable, scoring five. fast, beautiful goals while holding E-town to their initial three. It was a well-deserved victory for the entire team. but es- pecially for Coach and for senior co-captains Hank and Nibs. J.V. had a disappointing season. While winning only one game, they gained experience through their four losses and two ties. The brightest spot of the season came in a game against Lebanon Val- ley when every team member. led by Set Sale with five goals and eo-captains Marla and Jame on defense. played like they never had before and shut out the opponent. 5-0. The regular season ended and tournaments be- gan. Tim and Lo were named to First Team Suquehanna and. at the same time. Nibs and Hank received honorable mention. Lo and Tim- mie then went on to the Mid-Eust Tournament and onto National Tournament play where Tim was named to the All-Americzm Squad for the second straight year. Gettysburg produced two fast-moving. sharp-shooting womenk basket- ball teams. Although the scores at times did not indicate it. the varsity team played better as a team than they have for several seasons. Loxing only three girls from last year, and gaining several strong players from junior varsity. the varsity team played all-around good basketball. Because of the tennis depth in shooting. rebounding. amd over all ball handlinO. it is impossible to single out any stars. Gettysburg. although losing four sen- iorstendy Rose. Ellen Stevenson. Pat Henry. and Sue Niblette. is looking forward to improving on this yearls 4-5 record. All five members of the starting team will be re- turning and Coach Lois Bowers anticipates gaining strength from this yearls strong junior varsity squad. J.V.. with a regular season record of 672, were a group of quick. accurate ball handlers who managed to overwhelm several opposing teams. As with the varsity n0 outstanding players can he cited. because the entire team worked together in producing a winning sea- son. Several junior varsity players can look forward to playing varsity ball next year. and those remaining on J.V. will provide an ex- ceptionally strong nucleus with which to build. To bring the season to a close. the two teams combined to take on the powerful menk freshman team. Although sull'ering a narrow loss at the hands 0f the men. the girls definitely proved that they cam play basket- ball. and play well. under live player rules.
