F OREWORD HE great aim of education, said Herbert Spencer, is not knowledge but action. And so, it is the developing educational activities on the campus of Gettysburg College that we, the staff of the 1938 SPECTRUM, have dealt with as our theme. It is our sincere hope that within the covers of this volume you vvill lind in separate and vvell- organized form-just as the component colors of light are distinctly separated by the physical phe- nomenon vvhich we call a spectrum-a composite and kaleidoscopic view of the life of the most vital part of our institution-you, the student body. If the results of our endeavors approach to a close degree your expectations, we can ask for no greater reward.
