xo Lieutenant Commander Stephen D. Gilmore, USN, a native of Canton, Ohio attended the U.S. Na- val Academy, graduating in June 1974. His initial duty assignment was the USS BAGLEY (FF-1069) where he served as Damage Control Assistant and First Lieutenant from November 1974 to January 1978. Subsequently, he was assigned to Naval Mili- tary Personnel Command where he was ADP Section Head for officer and enlisted detailers. He was also a White House Social Aide during this Washington tour. After attending Surface Warfare Officers School (Department Head Course), LCDR Gilmore served as Combat Systems Officer on board USS EL- LIOT (DD-967). from February 19SI to December 1982. His Department Head split tour was as Engi- neering Officer on board USS SCHENECTADY lLST-1185) from April 1983 to December 1984. Lieu- tenant Commander Gilmore attended the Royal Aus- tralian Naval Staff College in Sydney, Australia from January to July 198.5 and was subsequently as- signed to the staff of Commander, Amphibious Group Three from July 1985 to July 1987, as Flag Secretary. Since October 1987 LCDR Gilmore has been serving as Executive Officer, USS GERMAN- TOWN lLSD-42). Lieutenant Commander Gilmore is married to the former Robin Mitchell of Sacramento, Califor- nia. They have a daughter, Stacy, and two sons, Tim- othy and Andrew.

Commander T. Michael Wittkamp of Richmond, Virginia, received his commission in June 1970 upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. Following his first tour of duty as Chief Engi- neer on USS FORCE (MSO-445) he v as assigned to the precommissioning crew of USS ROBERT E. PEARY (FF-1073) as First Lieutenant and Communi- cations Officer. Upon completion of the Department Head Course at the Naval Destroyer School in July 1976, he served as Operations Officer on USS HOL- LISTER (DD-7S8). Commander Wittkamp then served as First Lieutenant on USS JUNEAU (LPD- 10) from April 1978 to June 19S0 which was followed by a tour at Navy Recruiting Command Headquar- ters as Director, Management Systems Division. Commander Wittkamp served as Executive Officer on USS FORT FISHER (LSD-40) from June 1982 to February 1984. Following a tour in the Office of the Chief of Na val Opera tions as an Action Officer in the strategy. Plans and Policy Division (OP 60), he at- tended National War College. Commander Witt- kamp assumed command of USS GERMANTOWN in May 1988. Commander Wittkamp has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars and the Navy Achievement Medal. In addition, he is au- thorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation, Navy E , Humanitarian Service Medal and various unit and campaign awards. Commander Wittkamp is married to the former Mary Ann Wolaver of New Orleans, LA. The Witt- kamps, who currently reside in San Diego, have two children, Michael Louis and Jennifer Lynne. COMMAND MASTER CHIEF Master Chief Summerday entered the Navy in July 1966. Upon completion of recruit training at Great Lakes, Illinois, his first tours included USS CABILDO (LSD- 16). USS HAMPSHIRE COUNTY (LST-819). USS TOM GREEN COUNTY (LST-llSQ) and USS MONTICELLO (LSD-35). In June 1973 he reported to the Surface Craft Department at Point Mugu, California where he served as a craftmaster for 85 foot Aviation Recovery Craft (A VR) and 35 foot Yard Utility Craft (YFU). Returning to sea in 1977, Master Chief Sum- merday served a board the USS CA YUGA (LST-1186) as the Leading Chief Boatswain Mate. In Novem- ber 1981 he reported to Navy Management Systems Support Office, Detachment Pacific as a Computer systems software analyst in the SNAPP II project. He was assigned as Command Master Chief, USS GERMANTOWN (LSD-42) in February 1986. Master Chief Summerday has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon as well as several Good Conduct, Campaign and Ser- vice awards. He is married to the former Ann Ma- rie Davenport of La Grande Park, Illinois. The Summerdays have a daughter, Mary Kathleen. They presently make their home in Lemon Grove, California. BMCM Summerday departed USS GERMAN- TOWN (LSD-42) in April 1989. Master Chief Boatswain ' s Mate (Surface War- fare) B. F. Nelson is from Turin, Iowa and enlisted 6 August 1968. Following Boot Camp he was as- signed to Deep Water Piers, Danang, RVN and then River Patrol Flottila Five, Binh Thuy RVN. Master Chief has been assigned to USS ST LOUIS (LKA-116). USS SPERRY (AS-12). USS DURHAM (LKA-114). USS ALBERT DAVID (FF-1050). USS RA- CINE (LST-1191) and as commissioning crew mem- ber of USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41). Ashore BMCM Nelson has been assigned as Command In- vestigator, Fleet ASW San Diego, as a member Commander, Amphibious Group Three Staff and is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy. He reported aboard USS GERMAN- TOWN (LSD-42) as Command Master Chief 27 Feb- ruary 1 989. Master Chief Nelson has been awarded four Navy Achievement Medals, Combat Action Rib- bon, three Good Conduct Awards as well as ser- vice and campaign awards. Master Chief Nelson is married to former Barbra J. JoUey of Warren, Arizona and has five children, Lori, Brandye, Chris, Lisa and Bill. Lisa and Bill still reside with their parents in Santee, California.
